Not to impressed with the initial line up, but it's a start.
I wonder if they will be releasing AE box-sets of certain series (Rah Xephon, Gasaraki, Noir) at a cheaper price (similar to how they released Nadesico and BGC for 80 bucks).

Same here,
I guess it's nice to start a lower price line, but the selections are hardly what I would call "Anime Essentials"
How about some of their cheaper boxsets like:
Nadesico
Bubblegum Crisis
Dirty Pair
Sorcerer Hunters

Maybe in 4 years... but I don't see that happening anytime soon. Anyway, isn't that why they've been recently releasing Vol. 1 with Boxes?
And yeah the line-up is a bit lackluster. I'm not too sure about ANY of those titles deserving the name "essential".

AFAIK, they already have cheap sets for Nadesico and BGC2040. They may not be essentials, but all the distributors are just coming up with fancy ways to sell dead fish that nobody wants any more.

Ninja Resurrection, anime essential?
WHAT?!
Plus I want to see an Excel Saga clamshell release.

Seems more of a case of someone dusting off the left over dvds in the warehouse and saying "Hey guys we need to move this crap"

I wouldn't call Ninja Resurrection and Plastic Little essential anime. Maybe essential anime to avoid, but not to buy. ADV should release better anime under this banner, like Excel Saga, or maybe Golden Boy with all six episodes on one dvd.

As someone pointed out this whole "Anime Essentials" thing is a way of moving all of the crap that they couldn't sell during the original release.
