And I have 3 shows remaining that I might still drop, this one and Medaka Kuriowa is Impervious to My Charms and Possibly the Greatest Alchemist. I don't really feel passionate about any of them one way or another....Last post I mentioned three non-isekai fantasy shows that seemed pretty low tier, Bogus Skill:Fruit Master, Something Something Appraisal Skill, and this one. I said that I liked this one the best, and it was faint praise.... If you want to argue that this show is one star, knock yourself out...So I guess the reason I'm still watching this one even though it doesn't exactly thrill me is that it doesn't specifically annoy me....The animation is mid tier...Every now and then the show throws in something new...The MC isn't OP - So, yeah, nothing special, but I find it watchable enough. Barely. |
In the interest of engagement, here is my list of shows in approximate order of preference and very short reason
Villainess Dad Lots of originality, great humor and writing
Shangri-La Frontier Too much good stuff, lots of heart
Dr. Stone in 'Merica Legit Science and fun characters
Toilet Bound Hanako-kun Lots of heart, childish innocence amidst macabre
Guild Receptionist Relatable protag, lots of story potential
Online Shopper Isekai Bold writing, interesting characters
Fruitmaster Characters with good attitude, also airs on Tuesday
Noble Might as well try Magic Airs on Monday, Liam might attain godhood...
GOAT Alchemist? Airs on Tuesday
I like having at least one show to watch every day (two is better) and as you can tell, the latter two have little going for them other than they are inoffensive and air on the right day. I also like to check out shows that might be under-rated or have interesting bits and I checked out this one partially because you had much to say in support of liking it. I'm not here to rate it and appreciate that some shows aren't all that good but are still enjoyable for myriad small possibly idiosyncratic reasons and my last four fit that category. I suspect this show appeals to you for the same reason, I just can't get past some elements. BTW, I also dropped Appraisal Actually... because everything became insufferably convenient for protag-kun once "appraisal" was generalizable to acquiring all related info on anything at any point in time. Sort of reminded me of "healing" in Redo of Healer

I'm the same way. I have this sort of cleansing ritual where I come home from work, make a light snack (watermelon, little oranges, strawberries, etc) and brew some coffee, and watch an anime or two. And every season finding an anime that I want to watch seems particularly challenging on the Monday to Wednesday stretch.

Great to find a kindred spirit! It seems many seasons Mondays and Saturdays (sometimes Tuesdays or Wednesdays too) shows that appeal to me are in very short supply, so in those times I try to find a couple more that air the day before that I can keep over for the next day. Good shows are hard to have restraint on, so if I can find a "passable" one on those days I can wait and thank God that English dubs also work to fill gaps...
The column last week that claimed anime is a drug I really agreed with.

After watching how low Simon finally sank, I have to wonder if he and the MC were ever friends at all. Rape and murder and sadism don't seem like something a gradual decline into dickdom caused by too much unearned success could account for. You'd think there would be at least some flickers of remorse or hesitation.
Not only that...(gasp) it looks like the MC's former party member is going to become a monster after becoming embittered and getting handed some kind of magical power-up by a villain. Boy howdy, that one really jumped the rails of the conventional plot for this kind of anime. Never...um...seen that one.... before.
That said, the scene with Persephone was alright...not as terrifying as a trip to the land of the dead ought to be, but not bad. The part with the kindly old woman inviting them into her cottage was kind of cool.
And Jamie's redemption arc had some unexpected depth IMHO.

I think it is more that dangerous situations tend to clearly show a person's true colors. I will say though that even compared to many other similar anime Simon is ranking pretty damn high on the scumbag ranking list. He really shows zero hesitation and does not even try to make some fake excuse. In a way that is refreshing and I hope that when monster Simon gets defeated he will go out in a similar fashion: a monster without redemption of any kind.
Jamie will probably get saved, it would be a bold move to kill her off.

Only 8 episodes in (of 24 total mind you) and it almost feels like a season closer. Simon has been dealt with and I like that he was a piece of trash until the very end. Said end is going to be an eternity of suffering and besides a short flashback the show did not try to make us feel bad for him. Jamie was saved and received a relatively light punishment and that pervy merchant has also been dealt with. Kudos to dark magic for being so handy btw.
So yeah, I wonder what is next with everything having been wrapped up so neatly.

As for what comes next, I reckon that Yuke...I still can't get used to that nickname. It's a slang term for vomit here in the colonies, as in the verb form.... Anyway, it's looking like our MC has gone from a light magician to a...well, Twilight magician I guess. I'm sure that's going to be a whole damn thing.
They might also take the month long break mentioned for the party and have a SOL episode. And you know what that means...beach trip or hot spring! Either that or an origin episode. How'd a dark elf wind up adventuring in this racially charged environment? Why is Yuke so obsessed with the Achromatic abyss? How is it that Rain has an exact lookalike voiced by the same voice actress in at least two other anime?

Episode 9 did indeed show what is next but even more important is that it took the time to wind things down for a bit. Looking back almost every episode thus far has been battling in dungeons with very little time to relax. It was nice to see the characters grow closer, have a bit of romantic progress and work things out. That includes a good moment of showing how Thunder Pike started and that it was not always such a toxic party and celebrating that the Clover party has two new members.
Next up is a brand new dungeon that will surely not be dangerous though there will not be a new episode next week.
