Oo-oo-oo-oo, I've got one! Coincidentally, I started watching The Melody of Oblivion recently. If you ever wanted to know what it was like to drop acid without going through the expense of buying tabs, just check it out. I absolutely adore it in all its fever dream glorious insanity (although oddly enough there are actually cogent elements that are introduced and developed).

I still have yet to dip into GoHands myself, but describing them as "Breenian" might be the push I need, the mix of wild plotting and over-the-top yet also barely thought out visuals is super compelling

Being clear here, the only one of these I know and loved it Utena.
But it is true: Anime is a drug. A safe kind of high, to paraphrase Hendrix (about music).

I'm surprised at the lack of Masaaki Yuasa stuff mentioned. Kaiba and Mind Game in particular.
Vatican Miracle Examiner is kinda odd. The plots are a little unhinged, but it's the camera work that steals the show. It doesn't use static shots. Every shot that would be static is a camera pan at the exact same speed in random directions. It kinda makes you seasick after a while when you notice that the camera Never. Stops. Moving.
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi and Welcome to the NHK are deserving mentions for entirely obvious reasons.
Also, the movie Catnapped is weird.

Unfortunately, GoHands falls prey to trying to make everything visually interesting instead of using some restraint to highlight anything they really want to show off. I still remember some very interesting shots throughout K even though most of it was relatively standard looking. Handshakers didn't need dynamic shots of classmates talking at school, and it ended up being a distraction.

Le Portrait de Petit Cossette is one of the most intentionally trippy anime I remember seeing. It's Shinbo going whole hog to a beautiful Kajiura soundtrack. Might want to ease off on the chemicals for this one, though, it's not exactly going for a good-trip experience.

I watched that show twice and I'm not sure I ever felt sick from the camera but they certainly did do some funky camera work at times. I think I was too distracted by how insane the plots are (nazis?!) to notice (and too busy waiting for the funny stuff the second time I watched). man I need to watch that show again. I feel like it's the type of show that would lend itself to group watches with unsuspecting friends. Hit them with the santa episode.
I'm surprised trapeze (Kuuchuu Buranko/Welcome to Irabu's Office) didn't get mentioned because that was certainly Something. But maybe it's a good trip. Or a not good not bad but some secret third thing trip.
I also remember the first time I watched Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, it was too bizarre (the hot springs scene) that I dropped it (I was young and foolish). SHAFT anime can definitely be a trip though perhaps again a good one rather than a bad one.

Not a single Popee the Performer reference. What a sad, dreary world we live in.

A channel name or anything would be nice?

I'm not sure who counts as white and who don't, I'm not american, but Cleopatra had Greek ancestors and they all married each other, so she was ethnichally Greek

The Santa episode... I still use a screenshot of that episode as a sort-of digital christmas card

I am so glad other people remember Vatican Miracle Examiner's Santa episode.
@harminia: Next time you give it a watch, try to pay attention to that camera panning for extra laughs. I started noticing early on that every shot uses it. Establishing, action, boring exposition, people talking, doesn't matter. For some reason digital pan is the only setting. And frequently the next cut will just be sliding in the exact opposite direction. It kept making me think of the Team America Spotswood sliding around in his chair gag.
Also agree about Popee the Performer. Which reminds me of the joy of gdgd Fairies and Teekyuu, also.

Belladonna of sadness actually came from the era of bad trips, and was pretty clearly trying to evoke that imagery with its blend of goth Peter Max and Push Pin Studios.
It was the first thing I thought of upon reading the teaser for this column on the front page of ANN.

I'll have to keep an eye out. I do recall there being a lot of panning at the end of shots like pans to the moon etc but that's kinda common in anime... I also remember the show being way too visually dark at times LOL hard to see.
The santa ep is one of my fave. The first arc is great for its insanity but the santa ep just hit on a different level.
I wanted to mention gdgd Fairies but I didn't want to imply gdgd is bad at all because it's such a great show (one of my faves)
I also thought of Popee but I've never seen it, I just have a friend who loves it. But with my little knowledge, I was surprised it wasn't mentioned too.
I also agree with dm; I haven't seen Belladonna but I know it's very much a trip and a half of a film of that era.

Remember kids, Cleopatra wasn't black or white, she was inbred.
Also, according to Plutarch she wasn't even that physically attractive - her appeal was her wit and charming personality. But for some reason she's always depicted as a bombshell.
Anyway, in terms of anime that feel sort of "trippy," I agree with everything mentioned so far but am surprised Paranoia Agent hasn't been mentioned yet. It veers around through art styles and tones, but has numerous sequences that are deeply disorienting in how they're animated.

Ha, that reminds me of Trinity Blood, which wasn't all that trippy (or good...) but did that same slow pan over every shot. One of those you'll-never-unsee-it things. Also notable for tons of unnecessary 00s Gonzo CGI!
