Oo-oo-oo-oo, I've got one! Coincidentally, I started watching The Melody of Oblivion recently. If you ever wanted to know what it was like to drop acid without going through the expense of buying tabs, just check it out. I absolutely adore it in all its fever dream glorious insanity (although oddly enough there are actually cogent elements that are introduced and developed).

I still have yet to dip into GoHands myself, but describing them as "Breenian" might be the push I need, the mix of wild plotting and over-the-top yet also barely thought out visuals is super compelling

Being clear here, the only one of these I know and loved it Utena.
But it is true: Anime is a drug. A safe kind of high, to paraphrase Hendrix (about music).

I'm surprised at the lack of Masaaki Yuasa stuff mentioned. Kaiba and Mind Game in particular.
Vatican Miracle Examiner is kinda odd. The plots are a little unhinged, but it's the camera work that steals the show. It doesn't use static shots. Every shot that would be static is a camera pan at the exact same speed in random directions. It kinda makes you seasick after a while when you notice that the camera Never. Stops. Moving.
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi and Welcome to the NHK are deserving mentions for entirely obvious reasons.
Also, the movie Catnapped is weird.

Unfortunately, GoHands falls prey to trying to make everything visually interesting instead of using some restraint to highlight anything they really want to show off. I still remember some very interesting shots throughout K even though most of it was relatively standard looking. Handshakers didn't need dynamic shots of classmates talking at school, and it ended up being a distraction.

Le Portrait de Petit Cossette is one of the most intentionally trippy anime I remember seeing. It's Shinbo going whole hog to a beautiful Kajiura soundtrack. Might want to ease off on the chemicals for this one, though, it's not exactly going for a good-trip experience.

I watched that show twice and I'm not sure I ever felt sick from the camera but they certainly did do some funky camera work at times. I think I was too distracted by how insane the plots are (nazis?!) to notice (and too busy waiting for the funny stuff the second time I watched). man I need to watch that show again. I feel like it's the type of show that would lend itself to group watches with unsuspecting friends. Hit them with the santa episode.
I'm surprised trapeze (Kuuchuu Buranko/Welcome to Irabu's Office) didn't get mentioned because that was certainly Something. But maybe it's a good trip. Or a not good not bad but some secret third thing trip.
I also remember the first time I watched Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, it was too bizarre (the hot springs scene) that I dropped it (I was young and foolish). SHAFT anime can definitely be a trip though perhaps again a good one rather than a bad one.
