Fair enough. Voices of a Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days and 5 Centimeters Per Second all have a melancholic air about them that I can imagine some viewers would not want to engage with. I synced with that bittersweet feel, but like I say I have no problem imagining how it would not work for others who aren't onboard with that kind of experience.

Yes, I like my shows light and airy with an ending that says "and they all lived happily ever after", like for instance Evangelion. Um, wait that might not be the best example, perhaps another great show like Cowboy Bebop.
