After being impressed by Zenshu I was hoping that all isekai this season might surprise in how good they are... that is not the case. The first episode of Mastering Magic belongs in the isekai trash heap. Part of that is it looking okayish and being very generic, the bigger issue is the pacing. We never get properly introduced to who now is in Liam's body nor how he died and crossed over, it is not mentioned what happened to the original Liam either (nor does new Liam seem to care for that matter). Liam also goes from not being able to cast a single spell to being an overpowered magic powerhouse in like ten minutes thanks to a random fugitive showing up and teaching him.
I could complain more but it is not a good show, it might be solid isekai trash to muck through. |

Yah, the MC's past is a total blank, but not in a Jason Bourne kind of way. I'd like to think that they're saving a big secret about the MC's past that will play a crucial role later, but I doubt it.
It doesn't help that the anime plays out as if it was Forest Gump who'd gotten isekai'd. The MC just cheerfully accepts everything that happens to him and never questions or thinks about anything. Magical stranger being hunted by everyone? Hi! Sure, I'll read this book and put on this magic ring. No problem. What, you're giving me more magic? I'll study it! Someone wants to be my partner. Yay! The animation is typical assembly line isekai. World building is about as flimsy as those cardboard standups you see on movies a bout Hollywood sets. The other problem common among trash isekai is the whole bit with an OP MC who has everything go his way while quickly collecting adoring harem candidates. Complication? No worries. Solve it with more power, collect more adoration. New complication? Solve it with even more power and collect more adoration! How's that for tension and plot development? I'm not saying the show is particularly objectionable. It's just cotton candy IMHO. |

(Written in the preview guide thread... but it will just be lost there, so...)
I think I'll call this "Might As Well", because that's the only valid reason to watch it. Absolutely nothing better to do or watch?.... might as well watch this... Of all the things skipped in Might As Well, the one that annoys me the most is that the original Liam apparently barely existed. Bruno-bro seems to be almost close to him, shares lessons, is very familiar with him... except not... he doesn't recognize that his brother is not acting like his brother anymore and is fine with it. Liam also has no friends or attendants. Other than his father chastising him for his behavior, no one says a word about the fact that a kid that must've grown up a spoiled, if overlooked, kid is no longer such a kid. ...Maybe Liam poisoned himself at that party due to extreme self-hatred and severe negligence. "No one loves me or even notices me... maybe if I kill myself at the birth party of the sister my parents wanted...." And he was right... Except, it's questionable if anyone would have cared if he died. Oops, I think I just wrote a much better show. |

@Spastic Minnow - Maybe it's a Truman Show scenario of sorts. Maybe the family is responsible for summoning the MC, and they're all just pretending not to notice him bumbling around because he's destined to become the dark lord. ..

Why am I reminded of The 8th Son ? Last child meets mysterious stranger, learns lots of magic, starts a harem. Does that sound about the same?

Kind of, in that one Wendelin is also in a bad position family wise, he learns magic by reading his family's collection of grimoires and indeed meets his mysterious master to then starting his new life by being OP and collecting several wives. That said, while 8th Son is by no means amazing it is better than Noble on the Brink of Ruin. Edit: I decided to check some of the novels and boy does this anime blitz through the material. It feels rushed/very fast but it is way worse than I even expected. |

A few thoughts after seeing episode 3:
*A confirmation that Liam does in fact acknowledge that he is not Liam in soul and that he has taken over his body, yet not even a hint of regret or giving a shit about the original Liam. *The show might be on the same level as I Got a Cheat Skill when it comes to wish fulfillment, 3 episodes in and he is now OP, rich, a middle rank noble and with a harem that makes people jealous. *I do not feel the slightest bit sorry for Albrevit, he is a brat who could have gotten a lot of people killed due to his ego, protecting the family my foot. *Bruno might be my favorite character in the show for how much he badmouths their lousy father. |

Welp, Smurk, I gave this anime a third try, and it struck me how similar it is to In Another World With My Smartphone in terms of having the MC walk assbackwards into one incredible good thing after another. I think it was having an incredibly powerful being volunteer to be his familiar because it recognized his odd nature and power, much like some tiger kitty thing did with Toya, and having a princess fixate on him much like one did with Toya that kind of sealed it, not that the two anime have exact parallel plotlines.
I'd like to say that I'm going to brave the chill indifference I have for this anime, that I will soldier on through lands barren of tension, continue to plumb the shallows looking for depths, and finally, after much suffering and deprivation, plant my anime watcher's flag on the distant peaks of episode 12 or 13. But I'm afraid you're going to have to go on without me, brave explorer. Or as Blood the blunt might say, I'm dropping it. |

Of course, Edjwald, if you wanted to go full Blood-, you'd have to say, "I'm dropping this like a steaming turd into the toilet." It's that kind of elegant verbiage that really distinguishes me.

I don't mind saying I like this show for being "trash" but the unassuming good-natured variety where a nice guy gets rewarded and arrogant a-holes don't. One could also say it's a very minor study (no depth here) on how a villain is born, which is what Albrevit will likely become. But don't think too much about any of it...BTW, as a fan of S1 Isekai Smartphone, that was much better, as in it had more thought put into the story. This one just glides along on vibes...

Speaking of Touya from Smartphone: he seems like a slow slacker compared to Mastering Magic. Episode 4 had Liam not only start a new nation but he has become even more overpowered (teleport, summoning dragons etc) and can create familiars thus evolving them species wise at the same time.
Not sure why I am still watching it but it amuses me in just how much godly luck is bestowed upon the mc. |

Just watched Ep4 and holy sheese, is this story escalating! It's so crazy it really is sort of funny. For a sec it looked like it was trying to combine Pokemon with Fruit of Evolution with a harem on the side and then, shades of Laputa! Liam might make it to Godhood before Ep12...

I am managing to enjoy the show by quickly skipping through the normal magical boss moments and only spending time on the family drama (which is cheesy but fun in an ironic way) and occasional court / adventure moment. Somehow the show works when its reduced to about 5 minutes, with the rest done by 1-2 second snippets every half minute.
It reminds me of how the best moments of 7th son where his his family conflict over him being so op and being put apon by court and his friends. |

Pokemon indeed, in episode 5 Liam caught some more forces including additional elves, a princess and some wolfmen. He also dealt with some soldiers and bought himself some time though given how fast things are going he probably won't need it. Just pump out a few dozen of those magic armors and equip them on the troops and bob is your uncle.
