That certainly was a cheerful first episode. It almost felt like a bit too much brutality towards the end but it sure got the point across that the mc has hit rock bottom and is currently weak as can be. Given the premise I suppose that his appraisal will turn him OP somehow and I wonder how. Appraisal can be real handy but if a couple of rat monsters can kill you then it won't get you all that far.

This is one of those anime that didn't crap the bed the first episode but let out some real nasty farts.

I consider the second episode to be the best example of ''becoming OP quickly'' this season. That is in part due to it actually not being too crazily fast and mainly because the mc was brutally guided the whole time. It also helps that the end result is being OP yet clearly still having lots to learn and grow from. A perfect example is getting too excited and letting his guard down, thus getting slashed.
I like Ursula as a character, she is the ruthless drill sergeant you need. |

Yah, the second episode was an improvement on the first for me too. Whether I stick with this show will depend on the next episode...whether the MC is going to get some satisfying payback or whether the entire first episode was just a manipulative set up for edgelord revenge porn.

Well, I suppose it depends on what you see as satisfying payback. If you were hoping to see the mc go edgelord and bloody up his former partners then the answer is a firm no. I like the payback in episode 3 though, Ein is now living it up and has decided to just move on and leave everything and everyone behind since they no longer matter.
That living it up sure was something this week. Ein upgraded his eye several times, killed some overpowered beasties plus a boss and is now accompanied by an elf/world tree healer and OP mage. There is also his harem that is rather varied in several ways. It was a very rushed episode but I am curious how it will continue. |

I agree that it was a nice surprise to see the MC not becoming an Edge lord.
It was a little disconcerting how quickly the anime shifted gears from everybody hating the MC to princesses and heads of merchant guilds falling instantly in love with him at the drop of their pantaloons. I like having Yuri - wait, her name's Yuri? Anyway I like having Yuri and Ursula - wait, her name's Ursula? How is this the first time I'm noticing this? I like having the MC have some company. At the same time, I think he ought to get an eyepatch if the spirit core is that easy to spot. And if this guy is going to be copying abilities from monsters, I hope the show gets creative with it. Is he going to spin webs out of his ass? Develop the ability to grow chameleon like scales on his skin? Personally, I'd put this anime in the same category and level as Bogus Skill <<Fruit>>. |

I was a touch worried there about a guy to the harem. Anime doesn't tend to treat queer, especially male, characters with a lot of delicacy. I was expecting a lot more fear response, and did still feel a bit like a joke but wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been. The cat anime was more uncomfortable.
To be honest, I think the Jasper fellow could probably be the first actually more unique and interesting elements, to consider continuing. Outside of Ursula being iconic. We need more flamboyant and handsome and rich merchant man characters that want on the harem train. He also gems in his attire, which is classy in the rejection of it. He unfortunately doesn't appear on the series main artwork. We need more bi harems. I think the only "other" male one I can think of was from Nyaruko-san. |

Given episode 4 I would not count on Jasper being that big of a character in the show. Anyway, it was an amusing episode with Ein acting like the OP monster he is and the cocky gremlin that is Pina getting increasingly frustrated. I like that Ein now has a small group with him of differing personalities since that will keep things interesting. Pina in particular will probably stir up some shit at times.
As for Zoid.... Ein does not have to do anything, he is making himself as misserable as he can, I had to chuckle when Zoid's former teammate sold him out. |

It's kind of looking like Zoid is going to go the deranged-disgraced-douchebag-goes-searching-for-evil-power-up route. But I suppose he could take a surprising turn and learn some compassion and humility from his suffering. I don't think they would have spent this much time on him if he was just going to disappear.
And just like the stacking on of monster abilities has some creative possibilities, having the MC carry a growing harem/family reunion in his head could also have some comedy potential. But to be honest, this anime doesn't seem that ambitious. I'm just glad it's gotten better after episode 1. That turtle gave me Rising of the Shield Hero S2 flashbacks for a moment there. Bad anime! Bad! Shame on you! |

You were indeed spot on Edjwald. Zoid may redeem himself sometime in the future but he is not going to do so anytime soon. For now some very shady looking spirit is going to power him up and I am sure that it will end well for him. In these types of stories the douchebag usually gets changed into some type of abomination and only feels some regret when it is already way too late.

The show has not been great so far but it is entertaining enough and does a few things that interest me. That said, I consider episode 6 to be a big pile of doodoo. The writing made no sense at times, the episode felt very rushed and the animation was worse than usual (which is already not great). To give an example of the writing: enraged Zoid waiting for the gang to have their moment made no sense at all but even worse was Ursula saying that they can teleport to the girls in a second if anything feels wrong and that was just blatantly false.
Result wise the witch lady got chopped and Zoid is alive I suppose. |

I think those are all valid points. i found it rushed and heavy handed in the character development department, but I think the thing that hurt it the most for me was how goofy Zoid looked in demon form. Maybe that's shallow of me, but It was hard to find him menacing when he looked like he belonged in one of those old Saturday morning children cartoons, and close ups of him supposing to be horrifying seemed to take up at least 25% of the episode. Even when he was biting off people's heads, it was hard for me to take it seriously.
So...yeah, I'm probably not coming back to this anime or this thread next week. |

Well, I will stick it out to the end but that is mostly due to sunk cost fallacy if I am honest. Episode 7 is better than the trainwreck that was last week but it felt like an abridged summary due to how rushed it was. The clearing of the dungeon was done in a few screens, Alice fell in love with Ein after a few sentences and the penguin demon served no purpose at all.
