I’m nominating BRAVERN for both Leading Man of the Year (those who watched know why) and also Most Underrated Series because between being released at the start of the year and being short I can see how it will easily get overlooked despite the achievement that it is.

What about leading characters whose gender identity is nonbinary or ambiguous? There have actually been several this year, with Senpai is an Otokonoko and The Witch and the Beast both having them as leads.

This is a very good point and I'll bring it to the attention of our Community Manager.

I think this feature is a great idea and I look forward to seeing what choices my fellow ANNers make. I've already made my noms in the appropriate threads. I skipped nominating an OST because nothing has super popped out at me. I could probably come up with something if the category was Best OP and/or Best ED but I'm not so great at noticing all the music a show offers.

It's a little weird to me that the top male characters are framed as "formidable fighters" and "impressive" whereas the top female characters "captured your heart" with no other attributes given. Momo's a formidable fighter; why can't I vote for her on that basis?

While I didn't draft the entries' intro text, I can affirm that you should vote for whichever character you want to highlight for whatever attributes you think make them interesting/cool/a good friend/attractive/strong regardless of their gender.
I'll make sure our community manager sees your feedback.

Will there be a Reader's Choice Awards for worst characters and worst anime series as well?

Besides the listed categories, there will be a reader's choice for best anime of the year, but that poll will launch with the editorial feature later this month.

Just to clarify: this round is solely for nominations, with voting happening at a later date?

I'm not sure why the categories need to be gendered in the first place. Especially since, as seems to be the case presently, there's no overt intention to embrace the connotative meaning of "leading man/lady" here (not sure how universal it is, but in the context of old Hollywood, those terms usually applied to romantic pairings, IME).
Maybe it's just all the ASD in my brain, clamoring as always for greater clarity of language, but I'd like to suggest less ambiguous terms. EG something like "best primary protagonist," and/or "best secondary protagonist," and/or, "best secondary character." Categories that would still more or less line up with the expected archetypes, while also being more readily applicable to as broad a spectrum of characters as possible.
Additionally, if we're gonna be changing things up, it might be a good idea to retain the (intended? unintended?) spirit(?) of the leading man/lady category with a "best romantic pairing" category, or somesuch.
EDIT: and upon reflection, I'd further suggest replacing "villain" with "antagonist," both for parity but also to reflect that sometimes our favorite baddies aren't quite villains, even as our leads can be far from heroic.

Kudos to Sempai Ducky for constructing such a well thought out and designed means to enter nominations. Especially having links to the guides, I previously had to resort to bringing up the Preview Guides manually, but here they are linked and set to open in new tabs so one can do a sort of "side by side" perusal. Very helpful and convenient!

It gives the opportunity to highlight more characters.

That would be a nightmare and is actually more ambiguous. In terms of ensemble casts, there is far more up for interpretation regarding a "primary" or "secondary" character. It would require more technical nuance to keep track of knowledge of hundreds of series that premiered this year. We'd likely have to cross-check and throw out far more nominations.

Introducing romantic categories is also difficult because people get real particular about canon/shipping in these scenarios.
I also apologize if my early comments about passing on feedback gave the impression that this entire subject was up for renovation regarding adding more nominations or terminology. The number of categories is limited to what is currently provided because that is what is reasonably manageable. Perhaps in the future we can add more to be more comprehensive but that isn't what's happening now and it could become overwhelming if folks come into this thread to start urging for a bunch of other categories.
I feel adding NB character is important for representation reasons and changing "lady" to "woman" is important for similar gendered-language reason. I've passed that on to the community manager, but please don't take this as opening the floodgates for "best comedic character," "best mascot," "best plot twist," or a million other possibilities.

We'll consider it for next time; I don't feel the difference between the two has such disparity that it needs to be changed at this point.

Correct. Nominations will be added to the polls which will then open up for voting.

Neither Makoto nor Guideau are ambiguous or "non-binary" though.
