For most of Crunchyroll’s first decade, you could get a screenshot on iPhone or iPad with the standard gesture (volume up + screen lock today… I forget if it was different on devices with physical home buttons), and I probably tweeted hundreds if not thousands of de facto ads for anime that way, even though most of my followers weren’t anime fans. Real smart disabling that, but “ooooohhhhh, our precious connnnnteeeennnnntttt.”

I capture segment I want to screen grab from with OBS, the throw the video into Resolve and pinpoint the exact frame I want and print the image from there. Saves so much hassle and frustration these days!!!!

I actually just realized that now whenever somebody asks, "Is there anything I can do on Linux that I can't do on Windows?", the easy answer is "Take screenshots of videos on streaming services." Just hit PrtSc and it works! No developer in the open source OS world would tolerate letting your web browser disable basic desktop functionality.

I do wonder if JoJo got Netflix to take a serious look at whether the binge model was a good fit for everything. The overall reception around Stone Ocean was a lot more muted than you'd expect, and it's pretty understandable why. Personally, when I finished the second batch of episodes, my first thought was that it was going to suck to wait another year to finish it. Fortunately, the third chunk didn't take as long, but it still ended up being the better part of two years to see something that would have been broadcast over about 9 months.

Whatever DRM they're using on streaming services is very unfriendly to my attempts to take screenshots, resulting in a black screen with only the UI visible.
I dunno why they do this. Ok, I guess I *do* on a evil-corpo level, but it's still a pain. |

I don't know if the relevant options will always be available, but I believe the cryptographic extensions this stuff is based on rely on hardware acceleration right now, and major browsers have an option to disable it. e.g., in Chrome, if you go to Settings -> System -> toggle off "Use graphics acceleration when available", you'll be able to PrintScrn per usual again, presumably at the hit of some increase in CPU usage. (EDIT: oh, and I hadn't read the column yet, but they happily seem aware of it: "To circumvent that, I have a separate browser installed with hardware acceleration disabled exclusively so I can take screencaps to use in this column.") I'm personally kind've skeptical this particular use of DRM's even a sensible economic choice. I mean, it makes it harder to write some code that auto-screenshots every frame or something (or, it would, were it not for being able to disable hardware acceleration), but if someone really wants to pirate large amounts of media, it's hard to believe that's going to stop them, and you've removed the ability for media outlets to discuss your product now, which limits word-of-mouth marketing. I'm no fan of pirating, but this feels like a case where paranoia is winning out over careful cost-benefit analysis. |

Yeah, I use Chrome with the video acceleration disabled whenever I have to take screenshots on any service these days. (Annoyingly, though, I always have to remember to turn it back on to play one game which runs painfully slowly without the acceleration.)
If a title is on more than one service, I'll always take the screenshot off of CR because it's the easiest service to turn the subtitles on/off if I don't want those in the shot. (And streaming on more than one service, while far from ubiquitous, is more common these days than Coop is giving it credit for.) |

It's still "hold power, press home" on my iPhone SE. |

Honestly, even pirate sites make it so that their video UI makes it impossible to take good screenshots as well.

I’m not sure that the inability to screenshot videos on streaming services is actually a DRM thing. If it was, surely it wouldn’t be as easily defeated as by just turning off hardearr acceleration. I think it’s actually a technical thing; the image from the video literally doesnt exist in the frame buffer that prtscrn is reading from, because it’s getting sent to your GPU by other means and then drawn on the display at the last moment.
I cant say this for certain, but I feel reasonably confident about it because…I remember having this exact same problem screenshotting video playing locally on my machine back in the day! I haven’t had to do it in ages (I think it’s become the default) but if you didn’t have a certain box checked in your video codec settings, when you tried to capture the screen it would just be a void where the video image was. |

I'm pretty sure it is DRM implemented as EME; e.g., per this this StackOverflow answer. EME also comes up if you look for Stack or reddit posts suggesting ways to implement your own, similar screenshot-blocking. EDIT (/ removed some speculation): Oh, hm -- I never noticed, but the very next answer on that SO thread suggests software-based EME would not block screen-capture. Maybe it's just a quirk of specific implementation choices for EME? |

I do recall having occasional issues like this back during the early heyday of digital fansubs and think you're correct that the setting you're talking about eventually became the default. |
