First, this decision is totally not up to me, and I don't have an argument for ANN not to join Mastodon other than the potential need for more resources.
I will say that I had/have a Mastodon account but did not use it because the engagement was pretty low. Folks mention one instance with about 500 users, which is great, but comparatively, I've been on Bluesky for a hot minute and am only 100 users shy of that on my own. I don't think joining is hard, but the fragmentation confuses people and may affect engagement overall, which matters when you're a website trying to inform people about news. ANN's account on Bluesky is close to 1,000 at the time of this writing, and we've been there for under 48 hours. If setting up a feed is easy enough, I don't see why we shouldn't eventually include Mastodon, but I think this helps explain why we prioritized one over the other first. |

It's not just a meme, it's well attested by many.
If that were true, then we wouldn't need suggestions of which sites to join based on our interests. We could simply sign up anywhere. But your choice of host does matter - because the host's administrators choose what instances their instance communicates with (or blocks entirely). There's also no centralized search system - if the content hasn't been pulled to your instance, it's effectively non existent. Which further highlights the importance of choosing a server that matches your interests... Which is a right pain for those of us who are multidimensional. When it comes to social media, people are used to one site that has everything and which is nearly frictionless when it comes to locating people and content. Which is exactly what Mastadon isn't - it's fragmented set of Balkanized nations. That is what people mean when they say "Mastodon is hard". |

Looks like Bluesky is doing quite a lot better these days.

Yep, I just signed up and created a profile for it a few days ago. I want to disclaim that I just followed ANN on Bluesky as of this post. |

That's a good question, but I've seen evidence of mass exodus of people leaving Twitter for either Bluesky or even Threads. But I'll say this: The Guardian, a UK-based newspaper has stop posting on that platform, so I'm not sure if ANN (or others) will follow suit and probably stop posting, but Studio Ghibli has stop posted on the platform and already closed down their Twitter account last year. So yes, there has been a big jump in memberships for Bluesky for people that are tired of Twitter/X platform. Although I have seen people with both Twitter and Bluesky hasn't fully abandoned Twitter. I'm not going to abandon my Twitter profile given that I had that profile since 2009 (a lot of memories, and I have several if not bunch of tweets I bookmarked on there, so I can't permanently shut it down. But I have set my profile to private ever since Musk's taking over of Twitter). Bluesky feels a lot like pre-Elon Twitter hence the migration, but as I said, even people that have BlueSky profile will not abandon their Twitter profile unless something really really bad happen to it. |
