The decision to remake the game in HD-2D, along the lines of titles like the Live-A-Live remake or Octopath Traveler games.

Shame about the Switch issues. Haven't noticed anything similar with the prior HD-2D games, so I thought we'd be safe this time... but I guess this time they *are* eschewing the usual pixelated environments in favor of more conventional fare, and that's gotta be at least a little more demanding on the hardware.

Speaking of... the crisp, modern environments really make me wish there was a version of this game that let you swap between the current, low-res sprites, and clean UHD sprites. I can't help but think the latter might look really, really good -- and possibly be the best possible way to adapt Toriyama's character designs to a video game format.

Huh making your Gadabout/Jester into a Sage? I've always turned mine into Thiefs because in the SNES and GBC versions of the game they were over powered and starting with a Gadabout which gain insane luck makes thiefs Stealing and Mug ability great for stealing seeds from certain monsters which in turn increase your stats which is great for post game.

Might get the Steam version now and the Switch version later. Great review!

I appreciate when games let you swap between new and old graphics. I especially like Dragon Quest XI having the 3DS version and HD version like two separate games.

I'll probably pick the Steam version up on a sale one day. I've played the SNES version to death already over the years and by them there might be mods for the game.

... Huh, I'd never considered that. Normally, I just went Gadabout->Sage because Gadabouts don't need the Words of Wisdom to become a Sage. That's a really smart use of a Gadabout, especially given the absurd luck a gadabout can get if they have the Vamp personality. My own Gadabout's luck was over 180 when I ascended her (roundabouts level 21-22-ish).

^It's the most straight forward route, so I can't blame you there. Sages are the best class besides the Hero when you think in basic terms by a long shot, otherwise they wouldn't make them easy to get, would they? The rough times in the beginning of the game are well worth the benefits they offer. I often struggle in the beginning of the game just choosing either a Mage/Wizard or a Merchant/Dealer due to the Mage being a glass cannon while the Merchant having great utility Abilities and the chance of finding extra gold, but a so-so battle companion compared to almost everyone else! I think I'm going Priest to Sage, Gadabout to Thief and Monster Wrangler to Sage (if it keeps enough stuff, early word is they are great!).

Early tip to everyone playing females classes, get the Vamp/Sexy personality!

First time players: Vamp is good but it can also be a trap. It might look busted due to the sheer amount of total stat gains you get from it, but you're often better off with a personality that goes all-in on a stat you actually care about like Bat out of Hell or Genius.

The game is very mod friendly according to the usual DQ modding community and has been decompiled already so it should be relatively easy.

DQIII is one of my favorites in the series so I'm definitely looking forward to revisiting it.

Been enjoying it so far.Started out with a Priest, Mage, Monster Wrangler set up. I've also heard Monster Wrangler's are kinda broken at higher levels if you've been diligent with the monster arena so really wanting to see what that entails. It definitely says a lot about how strong DQIII was that even decades later all they have to do is a few additions and that's it. This is still basically unchanged from 30 years ago.
