Ranma ½ (TV 2024) Source: Manga (completed @ 38 volumes, by Rumiko Takahashi) Demographic: Shounen Animation Studio: MAPPA Genres: action, comedy, drama, romance, slice of life, supernatural Themes: absurdity, body switching, ecchi, gender switching, harem, love polygon, martial arts, school, slapstick, transformations, tsundere Plot Summary: Ranma Saotome has just gotten back the legendary Cursed Springs (Jusenkyo) of China and has been engaged by his father and his best friend, Genma and Soun, to Akane Tendo, Soun's daughter. Ranma and Akane are off to a rough start and it doesn't help that Ranma has a curse from Jusenkyo: turning into a girl when splashed with cold water. Throughout the series, more characters are introduced, some with curses similiar to Ranma's, and Ranma and Akane begin to love each other, even though they refuse to admit it. Air Date & Platform: October 5, 2024 (Saturday) Available on: Netflix Episode Count / Runtime: Pending ---------------------------------- I've always tried to tell people this is the anime equivalent to the (The) Office (U.S.), in that it's an aimless good time with quirky characters and full of shenanigans. Very much looking forward to how this'll be handled with today's industry standards. Last edited by Tony K. on Sun Oct 06, 2024 3:57 pm; edited 1 time in total |

All i want is for them to do with it is at least use OP1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGREcRw3Xw8) of the original series as an insert song at minimum.

Having not seen the original and hearing people talk very fondly of it I will probably give it a try, given the genres and themes it seems lively.

Love this episode, the animation is great, and I love that is takes place in the 80's.
If it takes place in the 80's, if they ever did a crossover with Inuyasha, I guess Kagome would be a little girl, or they could do some time traveling shenanigans. I wonder how the new voices will be like, especially Shampoo, I am sure the English dub can't do it exactly like it was in the original. |

That was a fun start and it really does remind me of the anime of old in several ways including the story. Lively very much fit the episode with the main characters off to a bad start and it not being all that serious. One does wonder what other cursed hot springs there were to fall in.

Ooh boy. The manga eventually had some doozys, where in my humble opinion the author was completely running by the rule of funny. And I thought those stories were funny, even if they had the potential to really warp the story eventually. Most of these are from one far off manga story arc, and were never used again, and never showed up in the anime. But they show that it was all in the pursuit of humor, in my opinion. Fans shouldn't get too tied up in knots about this stuff. Anyway, many spoiler tags below. I tried to create vague warning titles as best as I could. Add ons: spoiler[ A person can go into more than one spring. I think?... ] More add ons: spoiler[ More than one thing can have drowned in a spring, at least if they all go in at the same time. A Chimera effect. ] Specifically, the above: spoiler[ Only happened to one person, but they do show up in more than one story arc.] These three are all from the same story arc. Variation of water use spoiler[ It is possible to bring water from the springs to Japan and dump it on someone. ] Not just looks: spoiler[ A person's behavior/ mind set can be altered.] Number of creatures affected: spoiler[ Copies of people can be made.] |

Thanks for the detailed answer. I love that the springs are very much still a thing later on (not some one off mention to then be forgotten). As for how crazy they are, I can see how those might make for some very absurd situations and possibly some story breaking if said story was serious. After the first episode I assumed that it is a funny series that never gets too dramatic but you never know.

I finally worked through the backlog of anime that started piling up on Thursday and got to this one. I never saw the original, and I have no idea if that works in this show's favor or takes away an element of appreciation. Either way, I liked the show.
Lessee, Smurky already called it fun and lively, so...I thought it was amusing chaos. Yeah, that works. My only complaint is that the male lead and female lead look so much alike with their similar features and matching mullets. Fortunately, anime isn't a medium that has made me paranoid - if not near traumatized me - with bizarre incestuous romance twists, no, not at all, so I didn't have occasional moments of odd disquiet looking at them. I enjoyed the hijinks . I chose not to peek at the spoilers just in case, Nom (and BTW, why doesn't despoil mean to not spoil or undo spoiling?) but thanks for letting me know that the springs don't just disappear. . |

There are no bizarre incestuous romance twists in Ranma 1/2. Any similarity you see in the character designs of Akane and Ranma is a limitation of the character designer of the anime. The body of girl type Ranma is that of a teenage Chinese girl of ages long past. |

A solid restart to a solid show but here's my issue with Rumiko Takahasi's two main comedy series: The characters are largely interchangeable but just flavored a bit differently.
1 Alien flavored, oddly timeless despite being Oni specific. 2 ... Chinese flavored. I'll wait and see how well this has aged with Shampoo but I think the Chinese tour guide was changed a bit. He was designed to be... one way... but now he's redesigned to be.... different. Maybe they should have taken this out of the 80s... |

It will certainly take a while to see significant changes. The first show's early seasons are classic manga stories, I most look forward to the point that they can skip all the damn Happosai filler and just go straight to manga adaptations.
I mean, what is the worst thing about the original Ranma show? Without a doubt, the second half and lack of ending manga adaptations. |

I like that the show is not just building up the main characters' romance but also those of the supporting characters (we did get some romantic bits this week). I also have to give props to Kunou in that he is very true to his desires and is not giving up on anything... even if it is very much hopeless and it just makes him look like a perv.

While watching this anime, I keep having weird mental flashes of Graham Chapman in a Colonel's uniform stomping across the television screen going "Stop it! Stop it! This is too silly!"

Silly!! Are you sure you are watching the right anime?? Ranma 1/2 is a deeply moving study of adolescence as manifest in Japanese high schools. It is designed to show the problems of ...
Sorry, I couldn't keep that up. Yeah it is deeply silly. Wait until they get into one of the major themes they haven't really touched yet, the complete send up of martial arts, specifically the myriad schools it has fractured into and all their arcane rules. They aren't kidding when they called it the "Tendo School of Anything Goes Martial Arts." When Viz first brought out the manga the sign board at the front of the school was translated as "The Tendo School of Indiscriminate Grappling." Going by the opening animation, this season we will see spoiler[Girls Rhythmic Gymnastics Martial arts and Figure Skating Martial Arts.] |

I can see where that would be funny. The miniature golf school of martial arts...
