Oh, was this the problem...? I started episode one and made it like 16 minutes before dropping because the subs were so atrocious. Nice if there's a clear-cut explanation.

The way CR mishandled Dead Dead Demon's Dededestruction's streaming is a malpractice, and frankly embarassing. You can even say that they sabotaged the show due to their incompetent handling of the show's subs.

Maybe, but this is very much looks like the licensor provided the closed captions that they got from Ocean and then used those as translation subtitles, and at the end of the day the primary fault is with the licensor as a result. CC subs have their place, and should be better than the generated rubbish that CR puts on their service and calls it a day, but the licensor decided the CC subs were good enough. Also, as shown generally in the past, CR will generally comply with the licensors wishes when it comes to subtitles (even if they are subpar in some viewers eyes).

Nice theres been work to sort out the issues on subtitles streams after feedback.

I was interested in the show, but I didn't even bother watching when I heard how bad the subs were.

Now that they fixed it, I might watch it one day. But I'm in no hurry.

Not the first time where the subtitles didn't match what was on the screen.

Same, although I'm not sure if I should watch the movies or the series (especially if the series assumes you've watched the movies).

As someone who kept watching through the bad beginning subs, Please try again. This is honestly a really great show that I would highly suggest.

I'll have to give it another shot - I barely made it past the first few minutes on my first try before just turning the subs off entirely, and then just decided to watch something else after the first episode.

The series does not assume you have watched the movies. It just chose to show half of the epilogue first in episode 0. The series includes all of the content of the films (with one small exception) and a lot more. Including the epilogue; that wasn't in the movies at all.

Basically, you have two options:
* Episode 0 shows where things will end up, even though the tone doesn't match up with the rest of the show and it spoils some details. But it doesn't say much about why things ended up that way or show much about the cast that you don't know about yet, so you will be left in suspense about what precisely happened to the world and the characters as you watch the rest of the series.
* If you want to be completely unspoiled about what happens, then start from episode 1 and watch episode 0 right before the last episode, 17, as 17 is the second half of the epilogue.

The movies and series have a different ending, they're basically alternate timelines. It was even announced a few days ago that there will be 2 versions of the Bluray in December, one for the movie version and one for the series version.

Yeah, as far as I know, 99% of what was in the movies is in the series. The only movie-exclusive scene I'm aware of was at the end of the films to wrap things up - and it wasn't needed in the series, since that goes a full 2 episodes (0 and 17) beyond where the movies ended, and has an extended epilogue. There are also two or three episodes in the anime that consist almost entirely of scenes cut from the movies. So the series is a much more complete version, with probably about 6-7 episodes' worth of new material compared to the movies. It's still a bit abbreviated from the manga, and could've easily been a 24-26 episode series - but the 18 episode version is perfectly reasonable and doesn't feel rushed.

It really did deserve better handling by CR. It's not perfect, and even apart from the botched subs I found some rewrites in it (as compared to the manga) a little puzzling - but it's still easily my personal pick for best anime of the past year, and it's not even close.

Just so I'm super clear... the dubtitles issue has been resolved? If I went back and rewatched from Episode 0, I would be watching the proper English subtitles for the Japanese audio and onscreen text is now also subtitled? If so, cool beans.

Correct. I went to check myself and CR had fixed the issue earlier this month.

Glad to here Ocean Group is still dubbing as i thought they closed up shop due to the pandemic. For me it makes me feel patriotic that Ocean Group still lives.

The Ocean Group does more than just anime dubbing though. Even then, their dubs for World Trigger Seasons 2& 3 and Dragon Quest: Adventure of Dai were released after the pandemic too.
