I originally wasn't very interested in this anime just based on the blurb, but the trailer has some crazy energy for a story revolving around fishing (and not the deep sea variety either...the standing around waiting while you let a hook drift through the water kind). The art and animation popped and the voice acting was pretty awesome (there were no subtitles and I was still getting a lot of the gist). The music was a little annoying, but hopefully that was just a trailer choice because what I was hearing didn't go with some of the purdy background shots.

Agreed, those two shows were great (still hoping for a season 2 of Breakwater) and Negative looks like it might be just as good.

Wow, this one’s definitely going on my watch list.
One thing I admired was how deftly the anime laid the bones of this story before fleshing out the skeleton. Spoilers ahoy. spoiler[Hiro’s addictive personality is demonstrated by his Pachinko habit. The negative positive reinforcement of occasionally catching a fish is similar to the intermittent reward system used by casinos and social media technology. The Pachinko game Hiro is playing is even fish themed. The fact that his current life choices make him abandon the jackpot he hits is a pretty clear indication that his life isn’t working. Hiro’s amply demonstrated, abysmally bad luck sets up how he must have felt when he discovers that he seems to be lucky at fishing. His loneliness and despair provide the backdrop for the newfound comradery and bonds he establishes during his sea bass fight and “schooling” experience. The reference to the cycle of animals fighting for their life when Hiro has given up on his doesn't seem like a coincidence....more like Hiro being lured the same way he’s luring the fish]…it all comes together in a way that doesn’t seem forced or heavy handed, at least not to me. That’s some fine ass narrative craftsmanship dammit. Plus, the animation is awesome, the still frame backgrounds are gorgeous, and the coloring is purdy. Hiro has a way to go to be likable given his funk, but he's got sympathetic covered. Or at least, he’s such a sad sack that I find it almost impossible not to root for him turning his life and his perspective around. And the supporting characters are neither outlandish nor boring. Interesting start. On one hand we have a mc who is completely boned in regards to health (2 years left to live), finances (those loan sharks seemed weirdly friendly though) and having no home. On the plus side, he got to meet a group of nice people and the introduction to fishing was fun. Said introduction gave some basic details, showed why fishing can be fun (yet bothersome) and even had some underwater fish footage.
So yeah, I am in for more though I do hope that the season won't end with the mc dying. |

While I really enjoyed all four shows that I watched that premiered today, 365 Days to the Wedding, DAN DA DAN, Mecha-Ude and this one, this one was definitely my favorite! I'm really looking forward to learning about the rest of the cast that was introduced with the main character along with Hana and Takaaki as they hopefully help Hiro turn his life around.

Episode 2
It's pretty clear that the suicide attempt that started off this anime wasn't just sensationalism or something that's going to be written off and glossed over. Hiro showed several signs of being his own worst enemy, the worst examples being wandering off to gamble when he doesn't have money for rent or food, or trying to self-sabotage his job interview when...y'know...he doesn't have money for rent or food. Not to mention his attempts to blow off any possible new friendships. But the anime also isn't letting him off that easily. The thing that became clear in this episode, at least to me, was that this isn't really a fishing show so much as a salvage operation, and what a wreck in the trash dump of his own life Hiro is. When Hana says "You had to go and make a fuss didn't you? You're not getting away now!" it seemed pretty clear to me that she could have been talking to Hiro just as easily as that big rainbow colored Salmon. That idea that he's fighting and struggling and getting lured by the fishing group - only back to life instead of a cooking pot - remains pretty vivid to me. And I'm liking it. I like all of the characters, except Hiro, but like I said, sad losers on a road to redemption have a different kind of appeal. Great guitar work during the fishing scenes, and the artistic standard is way higher than the norm. I don't know if there's going to be romance between Hiro and Hina, or if this is going to be a story about Hiro gradually deciding to fight for his life after all. The pilot made it clear that his medical condition isn't incurable, it just requires a sum of money that seems unrealistic. Either way, one thing I am sure of is that this anime is a labor of love, and I'm appreciating it. |

Hiro is indeed a major mess and I wonder where it all started to go wrong. It is clear that he has given up and has been in a downward spiral for a while now with the health situation and debts/gambling as the crown on the misery pie. Given the opening it seems like fishing will give Hiro the opportunity to heal (mentally anyway) but boy is it going to take a fair bit of work.
Also, not telling your parents that you have been diagnosed with having 2 years left to live if not taking treatment is a choice. |

Welp, as much as I like this show (and I do) about halfway through episode 3 I was officially ready for Hiro to start making some progress on the road from douchebag to likable protagonist, and it took most of the second half to get to a point where there's hope for that even if Takaaki did most of the heavy lifting.
So Hiro didn't get into deep debt playing Pachinko - he was playing the stock market and treating it like another form of gambling. I wonder if he was trying to raise money for his condition or if it was just simply that he didn't like studying.... Apparently Takaaki has some back story as well. I didn't really get all of that montage of quick flashback sequences, but Takaaki must come from some money if he was able to pay off Hiro's debt (which apparently would cost more than the fishing vehicle that Takaaki was talking about getting if he won the million yen) , and there was something about a girl and then a shot of a flower that I immediately assumed was a funeral flower without any real justification. Well, the scenes were triggered by Takaaki hating the idea of someone thinking they don't have a right to exist, so I guess there was a little justification. The 3 episode trial period has passed, and I'm still liking the show. |

I agree with you in that Hiro is a real pain in the butt right now and his road to recovery is going very slow and bumpy. On the other hand, he has been depressed for a long time and even tried committing suicide so him being all smiley and hopeful for the future so soon would not work out at all either. I suppose it being such a bumpy road will make progress all the more meaningful.
Takaaki on the other hand is a real bro, one which you will probably never find in real life. He is not giving up on Hiro no matter what. |

I liked episode 4 a lot.
- I liked seeing the anime settle into a slice of life groove without some crisis of Hiro's own making driving a lot of chaos. I can state pretty confidently that this anime is going to be my numero uno chill anime this season unless it does something #$%^ed up. - I liked having Hana's role in Hiro's presumed redemption and/or recovery start to take tangible form. - I liked the guitar music and the backgrounds. |

Agreed, given Hiro's situation some depressing moments are to be expected but if it was just that all the time things would quickly drag. Episode 4 showed how unique the fishing convenience store is with the fishing goods slowly taking over. It makes for fun moments though learning to work there is not easy.
Otherwise I liked learning more about Hana and her unique situation (given her schedule it is no wonder she sleeps in class) and Hiro getting to know a bit more about fishing and just having fun. |

There have been other mc's who are bad with money but Hiro showed some absolutely horrible behavior in the 5th episode. His first paycheck was barely in hand and he was already spending a lot of it on fishing supplies (in part due to enabler Kozue who I have mixed feelings about) and near the end of the episode was the purchase of a very expensive reel and rod. Seeing Hiro smile like an idiot due to his new purchases was fun but it really is for the best that Takaaki gets his paycheck from now on.
I liked the episode a lot due to the fishing shop visit and how fun the fishing/banter is but man am I still not sold on Hiro. That is not even due to his many issues but mostly him just having no charm at all. |

Yeah, Hiro being a sad lump is the narrative device that lets us view all of the weird characters and beautiful scenery rather a main character that we empathize with or want to be. The enjoyment for me comes from the feeling that he's a parched piece of ground soaking in all of the moisture coming his way (and maybe gradually coming back to life).
I think the way Hiro started obsessively spending money on fishing gear instead of pachinko was a reminder of what an addictive personality he has. I couldn't tell if Kozue was doing it on purpose or not. She seemed kind of like one of those hostesses who get lonely men to spend more money on drinks. But I really dug the fishing scene. |
