I am glad Crunchyroll is going all out with the English dub because this show is going to be a big hit.

It's going to be so surreal seeing the second VA for Ash voicing a half-Russian tsundere, though apparently Sarah is actually a native Russian speaker so that actually explains a lot.
Also Aaron Dismuke once again in a romcom with a tsundere love interest he knows how to make swoon. Jill Harris turning on the cuteness for Masha should be great. |

I was just wondering about that. I don't watch enough English dub to know this but considering the premise of the show is about how the female lead will say things in Russian, if they dubbed everything into English, it would defeat this purpose, which means Russian words will need to be kept for this premise to work. I know in some work, if the original lines were in a different language that is not Japanese, sometimes, everything turns into English regardless. |

I’m watching this anime subbed, but once it’s over, I might have to rewatch it dubbed just to hear Ash Ketchum speak Russian.

Sarah Natochenny only works union jobs, so does that mean Alya is a union dub? Or maybe the producers made a concession to pay her the union rate while keeping it non-union? (I wonder if she'd be fine with that, if true.)

Crunchyroll has updated the web page and tweeted that the first 2 episodes premiere on Wednesday July 24, not Tuesday. https://x.com/crunchyroll/status/1815485719495770252?s=46

Did she change her tune? Pokémon was non-union for like the entire run while she was on. |

She adopted a pro-union stance long after she started on Pokemon. I think the first time I saw her speaking publicly about the importance of supporting union work was in the mid or late 2010s. When she was cast as Ash, she was 18 and it was her first dubbing job so I'm guessing she knew, or cared, little about union vs nonunion at that point in her life. |

So, I (being a fluent Russian speaker) watched the dub!
a) The dub is really good actually, I like how it works in terms of comedy especially. b) In terms of Russian - yep, Alya now sounds as she should. If you care about "authentic" pronunciation, this is definitely the more accurate version! She sounds a little more on the formal side, but you kind of expect that from someone who grew up in a Russian-speaking background but probably not using the language much outside her family. At least in the first episode, the main feeling she seems to be "hiding" in the language is exasperation, which given her overall "ice queen" attitude (which comes across so well in the dub!) it is pretty hilarious. The "girl from childhood" spoiler[aka Masha] is about on par with the Russian in the original Japanese, I suspect Jill Harris is getting coaching from Sarah Natochenny. She doesn't quite nail it but it's not bad. Ironically Masachika's Russian actually sounds a little better than hers in this version. All nitpicks, obviously. Above all else, I'm just enjoying the comedy. I think the English dub is actually funnier overall than the original, and the chemistry between Alya and Masachika is really excellent here. |

I hope Crunchyroll fixes the issue with on screen text subtitles because half the joke is what's on the screen text showing what she's actually saying.
