A series that deserves mention on this topic is Yurikuma Arashi, a series that not only has several scenes of characters under the sheets (apparently after sex) but also has a very on-the-nose visual metaphor for lesbian sex that appears multiple times throughout the series

There were some absolute gems in this column. Denji's Five Finger Little Death Punch? I'm dead. Laughing

I'm a pleb who just watched the CSM anime, so I only know about this scene secondhand from friends referencing it, but even as far as that it was clear what sort of vibe the series was going for. I mean the scene between Denji and Himeno is both titillating and incredibly awkward...and that's before you remember that she just threw up in his mouth while kissing him! It's hard to believe that anyone could get through that and then have a problem with similarly-uncomfortable content later on.

More broadly, I'm with Lucas in that I don't see the purpose of many "raunchy" shows that wind up being surprisingly chaste in practice. If you're going to make sex an actual integral part of the story, like many of the series mentioned in this column apparently did (can't say I've seen any of them myself), then that's great, and I'm all for it. If you're going to go for straight-up porn, then all right, more power to you. But if you flash a bunch of boobs and butts and don't have the characters do anything with them, then what's the point? It winds up feeling incredibly juvenile, like a bunch of 12-year-olds giggling on the playground despite not really knowing what they're talking about yet. As Lucas put it, porn exists people. Hit up your local imageboard and go hog-wild.

I always knew the Japanese word for lily was synonymous with lesbian (because it's the same word), but the anime goes further to imply the lily is a physical representation of female genitalia. Interesting.

It's hilarious when shows are sold on how shameless and sexual they are, but they still stop just short of actual intercourse. Rias Gremory can have her tiddies out every episode and literally sleep naked in Issei's bed, but god forbid she has had sex before then!

Blame the Editor for that. In fact, Issei's entire PTSD arc was largely an editorial thing.

It is amusing given that given Shinmai was being written after DxD started and that doesn't hold back at all.

I remember covering Stranger By The Shore for This Week in Anime a few years back, it's a lovely film. And yeah, it's wonderful at portraying the awkward bits that come from physical intimacy. So much of that film is the protagonist (his name escapes me) learning to be okay with being honest about himself, even if it leaves him vulnerable.

Conversely, there's Twittering Birds Never Fly, which stars a promiscuous yakuza dealing with a lot of self-hatred through a lot of self-destructive wanton sex and the bodyguard he wants to bone who is still dealing with a lot of trauma that leaves him impotent. It's a wild movie, homeboy actually wants a guy trying to kill him to shoot him in the family jewels!

I dread to think of the reaction if the end of volume spoiler[5] of Apothecary Dairies gets adapted.

Anime is definitely more mainstream and that's why you see more complaining compared to the past but I don't think anime itself has changed all that much. It's still as sexual and perverse as it's always been. It's just now we live in an era where we get to publicly see people on social media and news sites talk about it which includes the detractors.

This is also largely my take on it. While casual fan service does seem less pervasive in recent years, it's definitely still around, and every so often we get big surges of more dedicated content (such as in the Winter '24 season).

Hmmm, i do find the depiction of Sex in media really inetersting, it can be shown in many different ways, i am just gonna list some them up and how they chose to show it (and in many case not really). so this will contain light spoilers for Kaguya-Sama Love is war, Horimiya,

Shows like, Horimiya, Kaguya-Sama shows teenage sex in a more intimate way, they are not graphic in the depiction, and most of the akwardness comes afterwards.

We then have shows that have sex, but it is not shown it just so mentioned as a part of the normal life. Stuff like Panty & Stocking, Farming Life in Another World, Arifureta (honestly might be like the only decent thing i can say about that show, is that is does not hide the fact that our main pair has sex) and Chillin' in Another World and here i need to get into LN and Manga spoilers. spoiler[So the scene in episode 6 with the two of them in bed is from the manga not the LN, and for the most part the anime follows the manga timeline instead of the LN. That scene is meant to be really sweet and in the manga it is, because Hinya does not get found out that she is watching, she first tell them she saw them in the morning. This scene does not exsist in the LN, because the Marrige to keep face is a plotpoint really quick forgotten. They have sex the entire night the night that they meet each other when they decide to work together, it is also so far from what i have read the only real description of the act. Rys and Filo then spend 2 straight days at an inn doing nothing but having sex.] So yeah there is a lot sex in that show, heck you can write an entire article on the good ways it shows sex and the bad ways as well there is a reason there is a content warning in some chapters.

i do like the show where our characters are not shamed by the act of sex. But i can see i need to finiish this up, i have a lot more to say about other shows.

Those GIFs bring back a lot of memories. I remember the arguments back in the day about how the show wasn't meant to be titillating at all and if you found these scenes sexy at all you missed the whole point of the series in addition to the marketing for the show being bad because they sold a lot of merchandise like wall scrolls of the girls naked and covered in sticky honey. I've seen quite a few shows get that kind of treatment like Kill la Kill, Bakemonogatari and even Evangelion. I guess people do have a complicated view on sex. Sometimes it seems like people are afraid to admit they find something sexy. Or maybe if they admit something is for fanservice it'll somehow lessen or cheapen a show they like since any show that uses titillation is a lesser product in their eyes for some reason.

That latest CSM chapter was the litmus test for normies or newbies. Today's fans are absolutely weak and would not have lasted in the 2000s

What's so special about the 2000s? The raunchy 90s OVA and hentai scene I could get but I don't recall the 2000s being particularly graphic. I guess the tail end when we got Queens Blade, Sekirei, and To-Love Ru but I kind of lump those in around the 2010s boom which is where I felt things really took of with titles like Seikon no Qwaser, High School of the Dead, High School DxD, Kiss x Sis, and others. As absurd as Eiken's proportions were I don't recall ever seeing a nipple on that show. I think the 2010s was peak for the fanservice genre myself.

It's not that complicated. People like T&A so seeing T&A in anime is nice. I mean, I wouldn't object to the next episode of One Piece just being a 20 minute sex scene with Nami and Robin but I get why it wont be. But that doesn't mean they can't have tons of fanservice in the show and simply leave it at that. It's not some either/or situation where they MUST go all the way and depict graphical sex if they decide to have some boobs and butt shots for fun to treat the fans.

I never understood why people keep trying to dismiss this stuff as some kind of juvenile or teenage thing you're supposed to eventualy grow out of. If anything that's just people telling on themselves if they've lost their libido by their mid 20s. So many manga artists are drawing boobs well into their 50s and 60s because they still enjoy it and you can read their thoughts every chapter foreword on how awesome boobs are usually.

Part of what I've always loved about anime is it can tell darker and more adult stories without explicit sexual content. Character A sleeping with character B doesn't make a story better to me on- or offscreen. Even most "ecchi" anime are ironically quite chaste, even if whatever visual novel they were adapted from wasn't, characters foolishly falling downstairs faceplanting into breasts then profusely apologising and then mocked for their pathetic nosebleeds (lol). (And I'm not complaining)

I can't believe I'm saying it but Mushoku Tensei seems to treat sex on a serious manner as Rudeus having a sexual relationship has a major impact on his psychology to the point his characterization is rebooted as he becomes afraid of contacting people like a shutin especially if it's a woman. Guess that's why he was attracted to Fitz/Syklphye

Let me repeat (3rd time) 100 Girlfriends is such a missed opportunity! They are 100 GIRLS. Why not guys, lesbians, bisexuals, the whole rainbow? That would be a truly epic series. Think of the possiblities! (I draw the line at underaged and incest, but I think incest is very popular in anime & manga).

Didn't mention Interspecies Reviewers, which opens up the mind to so many possibilities.

And Prison School. I like my raunch with good, disturbing humor.

Why not guys? Title says it GIRLfriends. They've got to be girls. Lesbians? They gotta love Rentaro, a dude. By definition, lesbians can't be in the harem because lesbians are women who love other women. If they also love men, they'd be bisexual

B Gata H Kei was great. It's a shame that the response to it when it came out (death threats, TV stations dropping it) showed such a dark side of anime fandom - guys who think that women, 2D or 3D, should be an oxymoron of virginal sex symbols like...well, Rias Gremory.

I'm in the middle of Mnemosyne right now, and while you could argue some of the sex is gratuitous/meant to titillate (especially the scene in which Koki is forced to watch), it's refreshing to see adults having sex in an adult drama. Very HBO vibes.
