Recent news around Xbox kind of highlights how differently Nintendo approaches what it does. Microsoft bought the biggest game publisher in the world, only to demonstrate that there wasn't as much planned out as you'd expect around that, and now studios are closed while the execs say things were getting unmanageable.
Here, Nintendo buys one studio, probably for cheap considering it was owned by Embracer, and it was done to serve a particular purpose. Growing for the sake of growing seems to be a bit of a problem.

Aside from Retro Studios, is this the only other western studio that Nintendo owns? I wonder if this means they are planing on porting more of their older games to the Switch's successor.
I don't know if this is comparable to what Microsoft has done. Nintendo is a lot smaller, so they wouldn't be able to acquire large studios. MS is ridiculously wealthy, and can afford to buyout these companies without a second thought.
@Great Rumbler Thank you

They've also got Next Level Games in Vancouver, Nintendo European Research & Development in Paris [made up of Actimagine and Mobiclips], and Nintendo Software Technology in Redmond.

Looking them up they did the Switch ports of Mortal Kombat and Hogwarts Legacy. I guess they want a studio to do ports of multi-platform games for them?

But MS opened another studio:

Pretty much. Nintendo doesn't do frivolous spending and while they do expand, they don't go nuts with it. Makes a lot of other game companies look like irresponsible morons

My wife has Hogwarts for the switch and I'm amazed and surprised how well it looks and plays. I dont know how they managed to do so. While pokemon violet/scarlet runs like crap.
I own hogwarts for the ps4. The difference between the switch and console version is more l and longer loading times. And of course lesser grafics. But it still works surprisingly well.

Fair enough. I just remember hearing the Switch version of Mortal Kombat being nigh unplayable. Maybe it was the exception.

When I was at University, one of our guest lectures, was a programmer from London Studio, she said it was a fun place to work for. Really sad that it has gone.

Activision and other studios/publishers (like Bethesda) were also bought by Microsoft to serve a particular purpose - to capitalize on their vast libraries of IP in order to grow Game Pass. Those studios already had projects in development when they were being acquired, and Microsoft acquired them precisely for the value they bring to the table. If those projects turn out to be duds (as was the case with quite a few) then Game Pass doesn't grow and these studios lose their very purpose within the Xbox umbrella, and so they get shuttered, simple as that. Yet Microsoft already has the IP and can take as many cracks at it as they see fit with whatever studios they do have down the line. It's just the cruel realty of the business.
