Finally. Can't wait. Please make it to the end so we can get Tiger Mask, next....But wouldn't it be easier to publish Megalobox? Maybe KC wanted to get it in before Chiba passed away.

A true mental "Blue Screen of Death requiring a reboot" moment, if there ever was one, & I'll definitely be getting it physically.
While I have seen some already bemoan the $60 price tag, it's a completely understandable one, because Kodansha USA isn't expecting younger manga readers to be buying this, because they obviously won't even be giving this even a single glance. I mean, to describe this best, Kodansha is going so far back in Shonen Magazine history that Viz literally can't imitate it, because Joe predates the debut of Shonen Jump itself by about half a year. The closest Viz could even get to imitating this would be to license Otoko Ippiki Gaki Daisho, Jump's first true hit manga, and there's no way Viz would ever license that series. Instead, this is an attempt to see if the market has "matured" (Kodansha's own words, via the ICv2 article) to the point that there are finally enough "old heads" out there to support classics like these, and while there has been some support via other releases over the past number of years, Joe still predates all of those (minus Lupin the 3rd, but even that's only been re-attempted via best of books), so I'm super curious how well this pans out for Kodansha USA. |

I think a lot of Hajime No Ippo fans are going to be happy with this announcement (I hope this news find it's way into the sub-Reddit). For those of you that don't know, I have seen report of Hajime No Ippo fans bringing up Ashita No Joe when it comes to inspiration for Hajime No Ippo or the likes of it. I have seen some reports of Hajime No Ippo fans wanting to where to watch Ashita No Joe (and even going as far as to read the manga). I'm sure the news/announcement of Ashita No Joe manga getting an official English-language release will make that Hajime No Ippo demographic more happy that they can read it and see where Hajime No Ippo got it's inspiration from.

Geo: Sixty bucks, huh? Doing an LOGH with it, it seems. I just hope the books are available for a while, unlike Buddha and the HC Black Jacks.

I don't think this is like LOGH at all, since Kodansha USA isn't asking for $500+ dollars up front for the entire thing, but instead is releasing it like any other book. |

I feel that this is a bit unfair. I mean (#1) Kodansha wasn't the one who published Black Jack, that was Vertical (yes, Kodansha later bought Vertical, but that was after BJ had already gone out of print), (#2) no one can seriously expect any manga publisher to continually keep every single title they release in print indefinitely (especially if a title underperformed), & (#3) the hardcover release was always a limited print run release to start with, because the "normal" release was softcover (which is what I own some volumes of). Also (#4) if you want to complain to anyone, complain to Tezuka Pro, which owns the rights to Black Jack & (to use your logic) aren't putting forth the effort to get a publisher to reprint the series today, either physical or digital. Yes, it absolutely sucks that later generations don't have easy & readily available access to many manga that were published in prior generations (there are tons of series I wish I could point younger fans to, but can't because they're out of print & are now expensive to purchase), but that's just how things play out, in the end. There's just so much manga out there, and more of it keeps getting made, so it's simply not feasible to make it all eternally available, especially if they predate the days of modern digital releases. |

I’m an Ippo fan and I’m pretty indifferent about this. And yes I’m aware of how iconic and revered AnJ is and how it influenced a lot of manga authors and fans. But this does nothing for me. But it’s cool for anyone else whose wanted to read & collect the series officially in English. |

Sorry, didn't realize when the buyout was & that HC meant Hardcover. I own the normal 1-3 and was able to read a few more thru my public library but I'll wait as long as it takes for a reprint/new edition. Frustrating when I see the full sets on ebay go for thousands |
