…Have y'all always scheduled these articles to release the exact minute the chapters debut online?

Man what is a new series supposed to do in order to survive these days? It's like if you're not an instant hit you just get canceled.
Wanna slowly build up your story, characters and world like One Piece did? Too bad, because modern Jump doesn't have the patience for that. |

Why do the potentially good ones always have to be shafted by Shonen Jump???
Especially when they have a muscle woman as main character!! This is Red Hood all over again! |

All that build up for nothing.

This is a massive loss, a great series with amazing fights (male and female!) and a really interesting core premise.
I will never forgive the uncultured WSJ readerships for taking my buff freckle wife away from me. :< |

One Piece pretty much was an instant hit, though. Looking at the records on Jajanken, it had the lead color position eight times in its first year not counting chapter 1, and right from the last quarter of 1997 -- almost as soon as it debuted -- it took the title of highest average ToC placement from Rurouni Kenshin. And Naruto, two years later, seems to have been in WSJ's top four fairly consistently over the course of its first year. A strong start has been important for a long time now. |

Aw. I enjoyed this one. Real shame.

There are a few new Jump titles that are doing well. But indeed, seems like everytime I see people on the West really liking some new manga there, it just gets axed soon. A pity.
This is why I prefer Jump+, a bit more freedom for authors there as they do not get axed as often (there is a rating system that can put you in the risk but it is way more lenient). |

Is that true? It feels like I’m hearing about a J+ manga ending quickly every other week. I think a lot of people don’t realize that Weekly Jump has always been harsh on newcomers. I keep seeing comments like “it’s so hard for new series to survive nowadays”, but that’s nothing new. People only now notice because all these series are getting translated now. |

Even Jump+ has to sell physical volumes. Perhaps not as many as WSJ, but cancelations still happen if a series is unpopular. Those are becoming a lot more visible now that Manga Plus is translating every new series (minus indie and licensed series). |

Also the ratings system barely matter, because it's only a way of marketing push among the editors that represent the interest of small part of auditory in the chapters, the actual save from axe is passing at least the lowest bar of volume sales and still keeping your audience from this point - which most of early axed series never did in their run, and bad ratings are just usually correlating with very small audience. |

I thought this was coming, but still hoped the axe wouldn't fall. It was easily my favorite fighting/martial arts manga in a long time!

Likewise; I thought it was great, and it realistically was Jump's best new sports series since what, Haikyuu? And that was how many years ago? Perfect subject matter, too. I feel for the author—this wasn't deserved at all.

How is stuff like Jiangshi X, Wild Strawberry, and freaking Nue's Exorcist still going but this - an actual good, well paced, well developed manga about an interesting topic - axed after 30 chapters? What's next? I'm starting to feel scared for Two on Ice/Shojo Null/Mama Yuyu, those all have potential but who knows if they'll last long enough to show it. By god if they touch Kill Blue I'll lose my sh!t, and I know Akane-banashi is probably safe at this stage but I don't think I'll ever stop worrying about it getting the axe.

MamaYuyu seems to be fine for now. But Two on Ice are in big risk. Last edited by Nachtwandler on Mon Feb 12, 2024 3:41 pm; edited 1 time in total |
