Its gonna be like Onemai all over again, where everyone gave it a 1 star review and called fetish and pedo bait claims and then turned into a real AOTY contender. |

Nana and Kaoru is actually also available on Fakku and I own all the books currently released with the new one hitting preorders today. The PDF for the last volume they released was busted and I reached out to customer service and they were cool enough to compile a new PDF and upload it. I would normally do this myself since they already give you the image files as one of your download options, but the only adobe software I have that is capable of putting this stuff together is through work and it's obvious why I would not want to use work related things to compile a book about high schoolers doing a bunch of S&M things. I mostly buy porn on Fakku, so it's hard to say if I'm missing other key releases that are not porn, but the service is incredibly agreeable: I get DRM free, uncensored books. There is pretty much not much more I can ask for when handing over my money. Jokingly referencing the other hot topic in the forum right now: if for some reason I took issue with the translation (which I do not... seems to me like they got all the moans and sound effects and stuff correct, so I'm not complaining), I could just edit the PDF and put whatever I wanted the characters to say in. But that's too much work. If I ever got to that point where I have to actually alter the stuff I paid for, I might as well do something useful like actually learning Japanese, which ironically would not serve me well in this particular situation since a lot of Japanese porn releases are censored. The labor costs alone turn me off since I get paid very well even by my industry standards, so I'm not interested in wasting my time on labor intensive ventures like this and just want to pay the money and be done with it. The people I paid already did a good job, so why repeat work? Anyway, Fakku literally just gives you a PDF of the entire book. That being said, I know we're veering off topic maybe a little too much, but this is a very important topic, especially now with the realization that this particular series has been kicked off of several storefronts: What are actually the best digital manga buying options? I like Apple Books in a sense because it caters to my laziness: I buy a book, it stacks all possible book purchases into one thing and I just mash buttons if I want to get the next book after reading the book that I just bought. However, I'm still kind of limited to whatever Apple doesn't kick off of their store front. Interestingly, I wasn't lazy enough and this series is apparently available on Apple Books for $8.99 per volume. However, I like the DRM free releases too much and will probably just keep buying it on Fakku since DRM free is obviously the most agreeable terms in which you can own a digital product and, interestingly enough, Apple Books has a function where you load PDFs into the thing and can read it like any other book you bought from the official store. I don't know if any other digital storefront is this liberal with your ownership like with Fakku, so I'm fielding the comments for quick answers that hopefully people have to get me out of the walled garden of Apple Books since owning a PDF is optimal for preservation. For starters, where else can I buy "Gushing over Magical Girls" digitally? Which of these storefronts give you DRM free options? I'm actually on the J-Novel Club store right now, but I currently can't determine how I get a book if I buy it from them digitally (yes, I see the post before mine, but I don't know what that file format is). I assume they give you a PDF since they let Fakku give people a PDF, but it doesn't seem to be explicitly stated anywhere, unless I'm meant to dig harder for the information. |

I assume the fact it's already a huge success financially and beloved by the anime fandom as a whole is why it's being covered in the first place despite the scathing it got in the Preview Guide. Not covering the most popular show of the season even if you dislike it is just leaving money on the table. |

@DKL
So if you make an account o jovel club, you can search a series and click to buy it. Once you do, you have access to download an epub version, which is DRM free https://j-novel.club/series/gushing-over-magical-girls It looks like it's also available on bookwalker; which on the one hand sells everything and does not give a shit (they even sell Metamorphosis). On the other hand, their app is by far the worst |

OK, it's Friday night and I just got paid. So I'll take one for the team and buy a copy of Volume 1 on J-Novel and on Bookwalker and expand on the experience. Give me a moment. |

I knew the show was popular but I didn't know it was THAT popular. I'm happy to hear it's doing so well in addition to being talked about everywhere. I still don't like the English title though... |

The bolded part is overstating the case. Even arguing that it's one of the biggest debuts of the season is a stretch, since it's only a fraction of what Solo Leveling is getting on MAL and well below titles like Chained Soldier and Delicious in Dungeon. (Hell, Hokkaido Gals has a higher popularity right now.) I would agree that it had a successful debut, but not even those are guaranteed to get ANN weekly coverage; see Ruroni Kenshin and Redo of Healer. (There are extenuating circumstances in both of those cases, though.) But yeah, this was a much-talked about series and there's certainly a lot of room here for running commentary. I don't doubt that the latter at least partly factored into Chris volunteering to do the show.
What's not to like? I love the double-entendre inherent in the title. |

OK, showing my support with money:
Buying from J-Novel, the official US publisher: I registered for an account. You need to verify your account via e-mail, which was tricky to do since Outlook was blocking everything, but I just mashed all the pixels and eventually got registered. Previews are given to you on the site. You can scroll by clicking the buttons. To buy books, you need to buy a currency, which are called "Coins". Gushing Over Magical Girls Volume 1 is 899 coins. This translates to $8.99. You can buy exactly 899 coins. The site also gives you the option for custom amounts, so there's no jank involved as long as you do the math. You get three downloads once the purchase is complete: 1. Mobile Version 2. Desktop Version 3. 4K The format they give you is a file called "Epub". I downloaded the Desktop version to my desktop and then copy-pasted the file into my iCloud. When I viewed the file on my iPhone, I was pleased to discover that it automatically opens in Books. This is actually a step-up from a PDF since it's less stuff to do since it's going to where I want the file to go automatically. Quickly scrolling through the file in books, I see no noticeable issues. I rate the experience A+. Buying from Bookwalker: This app is available on the Apple app store. I can register using my Apple account on the iPhone. I'm scrolling through the preview right now. It's quite laggy. I am not sure where the buy option is despite scrolling around for a few minutes. I google around and the official site is not useful in answering the question as to whether or not I can buy books using the app. I find a reddit thread that seems to suggest that buying on my iphone is not possible. I search for Gushing and it doesn't come up. It turns out I need to toggle some kind of maturity filter, which is a button you click on the search results. I eventually see volume 1 and it's 1,295 yen + tax. I can pay using card. I can now open the book in the app. I don't like it too much because it's very laggy and doesn't offer the same seamless experience I get out of Apple Books where I be zooming all over. The browser app also seems laggy. I try to download my book. The FAQ says I cannot do this. CONCLUSION: If you want to purchase the series digitally, I recommend just getting it from J-Novel and uploading the file to your preferred e-book reader. Bookwalker seemed kinda bad from my limited experience and you're limited to the kinda crappy app since they don't want you to be able to use your purchase the way you like, so you might as well go straight to the source on this one. |

It's definitely surprisingly popular despite the fact that it is a medium budget ecchi anime (which generally don't do all that well), but I wouldn't call it the most popular. That would probably go to either Dungeon Meshi or Frieren. |

What shows get covered is (AIUI) a matter of matching shows that poll well with reviewers willing to watch and review it. It's not a decision made by the editorial department based on any perception of the show's popularity or importance. It's not actually that unusual for garbage to poll well and end up getting reviewed. (There are, or at least used to be a couple of reviewers that would deliberately sign up to review garbage.) It's practically a tradition. |

I just tried Apple books on my Ipad, I find this much better experience reading mangas then using Kindle on my Android phone. To read with Apple books you just click on the file and it loads in Apple books, to read with Kindle you have to upload to your Kindle library first. On J-Novel club why do I have to buy coins first why can't they just let us buy using a shopping cart like normal? And I would have perferd to use PayPal instead of keeping my credit card attached to my account. All 9 volumes is 8091 coins = $80.91 |

yea thats not happening! the fact that not even redo of healer , world end harem and harem in the labrynth of another world got ZERO english dubs when they streamed on HIDIVE more or less will tell you that this series as well as chained solider wont be getting any dubs! at all! unfortunately! then there were other lax series like classroom for heroes which also got no dub and it wasnt as nearly as ecchi as the others, so yea! its slim to none if you ask me |

I am happy that there are others with positive reactions, because weirdly I am into it. I am sure there are other magical girl shows with kinks, but weirdly this actually feels like one of the first that it doesn't feel like at the expense of those with Sadism and Masochism. At least not like normally done.
Most of the time it feels like just calling someone a freak and leaving it at that, but I think there is something enjoyable. It kind of feels she has a kink for sadism, is a confused kid and while not inherently evil is funny in being perfectly taken advantage to make a villain. I see it as the sort of good fun of seeing an extra villain who could chew the scenery, coming from the gap moe of a main character in coming of age in figuring out her sexuality. |

Redo of Healer was Majorly Censored when it streamed so it probably got lower viewers on Hidive. Chained Soldier is also airing now. Harem in the labrynth of another world I hope get dubbed but it just aired last summer and it was on Crunchyroll same with world end harem, and classroom for heroes Last edited by chrisc1978 on Sat Jan 20, 2024 4:31 pm; edited 1 time in total |
