Actually the Marines are the most successful and popular branch of the military that routinely reach and even exceed their recruitment goals. The latest information as October of this year. Everyone loves the Marines. They're generally seen as the coolest branch of the military. So no, I don't think this is 'desperation' whatever that means. As people have said, anime fans come from all walks of life. Veterans and service members being huge into anime should not be a big surprise. When there were articles about how NFL and other athletes would be at conventions or like anime, people complained about it to, but the rebuttals from people were about how anime is no longer nerd culture and mainstream people love it to and there was no reason to gatekeep it anymore. So I assume people should have the same mentality for this as well. As an aside, recruitment booths are everywhere and at most conventions. This is not the first time they've ever been at an anime convention and it's been a pretty common sight if you've been to a lot of them I assume it's only news because a few people on social media got upset and tried to make it about current events or something. |

Veteran here. Anime is *extremly* popular amongst service members. Anime nights were a fairly common occurrence during my deployments. It's probably a recruiters attempt to reach out. Also, the marines met their recruiting goals so it's probably not so much an act of desperation as it may seem.
Getting care packages of a bunch of anime episodes burned on DVDs or on thumbsticks was pretty standard as well. Video games too. I remember passing around the Gamecube and Xbox 360 all the time back in the day. I remember when Don Mattrick and Adam Orth collectively put their feet in their mouth over the always-online Xbox fiasco and pissed off a ton of servicemen with their dismissal of the issues that maybe keeping a stable internet connection in the middle of a desert wasn't a big deal to play your singleplayer video games. The backlash to that was glorious  Army guys are just as nerdy as anyone else

I think it’s really inappropriate for the Marines to be there. Teens are very gullible and impulsive and often don’t know what they’re getting themselves into. |

Put them next to the loli/shota booth and across from the Redo of Healer section.

Right, people need to realize that vets are people just like any of us. They like anime. They like video games. They engage in pop culture. For all the talk of gatekeeping in various fandoms being a bad thing, the immediate negative reaction some have given is a bit disappointing. |

I don't think anyone in this thread is saying veterans or current/former military members shouldn't be allowed at conventions. What they're skeptical of is the military, and in the FBI's case an intelligence agency, actively promoting themselves at the convention, and presumably doing work to recruit young people. There's a stark difference between a veteran or military member going to a convention on their own, and going as a representative of the US Military for the purposes. As others have pointed out, that practice isn't unusual - I've seen plenty of Army and Navy recruiting booths at conventions before - but Anime NYC is a pretty big convention and the marines went so far as to buy a sponsored tweet to promote their presence. So it's getting more attention at a time where the subject of the US military is arguably at its most controversial in years. |

So what, they can screw them selfs. I am not going to censor my self at this exhibit just beacuse marines and FBI are there. Besides I don't think that is what this is about anyways, they have no authority to take action on anything for people that have been a part of this culture for decades. The only grounds on which they can intervene is if they choose to target attendee's that are doing something illegal. Or like stop a shooting or something because god knows we have alot of those going around. |

"Reading the US Marines and the FBI are attending an anime con has to be the most hilarious thing ever. I would actively avoid any con where any government agency would be involved. I hope this is not a sign of the things to come at other events." It's a fine line and perhaps it is just directed towards recruitment being there. I don't think I was the only one who took it that way either. My family has a lot of vets so I guess I don't see a problem with the recruitment anyways, but I get the idea of the military not being popular. |

There is social media pushback that absolutely resents the presence happening at all. Which sure is a take, I must say. Yes, who shouldn't resent the presence of institutions that grant people the privilege of having so much peace that they can go to an anime convention without spending 30 seconds wondering about their own security. It makes perfect sense.

As an old school otaku I just imagine a vash cosplay stopping in front of the Marines booth and posing doing the Love and Peace! sign.
What more interests me is the FBI and artist alley. The sheer amount of light IP infringement that happens at conventions with not so authorised goods would run directly counter to law enforcement. Of course NYC anime con is one of the stricter but there is always something going on. |

I don't think anyone is objecting to members of the military applying as private citizens. Sending recruiters is another story, though -- anime fans skew young, and many don't know that military recruiters are legally allowed to lie through their teeth to get you to sign up. So yeah, I don't want that at an anime con full of impressionable teenagers. |
