Gosh, I would sure hope not, save for rare and exceptional cases like the much hyped Frieren where it also makes a lot of narrative sense. Or last season's MyGO, and illustrating how one girl's history so informs and is currently informed by her messy bandmates (and with such deftness).

It could be a marketing change. There is so much sequels with built-in audience nowadays that having a special block at the early beginning of the season to hook and catch attention may be a good strategy to avoid being unnoticed for a new license. From the point of view of the audience that don't check regularly the new anime incoming and the trailers, it could be a valid strategy available to shows that have good planning.

I suppose we'll get to appreciate the difference good execution makes in a few days when Undead Unluck is released; I couldn't really stomach the manga at all (it's another edgy shonen, except the both protags are vile in their own special way), but if trailers are anything to go by, David Pro and the Shaft alumnus Yuki Yase are about to show how to really elevate the source material from the dumpster fire into an entertaining spectacle.

What? I genuinely believe you're talking about a completely different manga, because "edgy" is one of the last things I would call Undead Unluck, and I don't see how neither Andy and specially Fuuko are "vile".

I enjoyed Undead Unluck. I haven't read the manga, but I never really got any edgy vibes from the show. A cool action show, sure, but not really what I consider edgy. Andy seemed really over the top and too silly for me to consider him some kind of edgelord.

The show hasn't premiered yet, to my knowledge. How do you have an opinion either way on it?

Migi & Dali: My theory—the boys are on a revenge mission. There’s that dead woman in the opener, and the boys clearly wanted to be adopted by a family living in a specific town. I think it’s a little far fetched (really, a garden hose making it seem like it’s raining?), but I don’t mind because it’s giving me strong Moriarty the Patriot vibes. Plus it’s very creepy, and I’m totally on board for that.

Ron's Deductions: This is totally in my wheelhouse. I’m always up for a good Sherlockian detective series, and I enjoyed the banter.

Shy: Hmm, something fishy’s going on here. That alien chick is very suspect. And what’s the deal with that creepy blond kid—he totally set that hotel fire, right? Has the “darkness” taken over his soul? Not sure I love the two heroes we’ve met so far, but I’ll give it another week.

I'm In Love With the Villainess was a lot of fun. This first episode was mostly establishing world and characters but I'm looking forward to seeing the dynamics between them develop, especially our central couple. I also thought it was sweet that Rae encouraged Claire to pursue the boy she liked even though Rae was in love with her.

Also, guys, I love The Pillows and their music too, but you can't just put them on in the background of every scene and call it a day. That's not how the original used those needle drops at all, and all you're doing is diluting the impact of those songs when you play an entire EP through the whole episode.

Thank you, Nicholas. After watching Toonami reruns of Progressive/Alternative to see if there was anything more to them than I remembered, and now sitting through...whatever Grunge was and Shoegaze seems to be, I've thought a lot about what made the original so timeless, and why I can keep coming back to it after all these years and rewatches. And a major factor in why it's such a classic is how note-perfectly it used The Pillows' music. It wasn't just that the songs themselves were great, but that the series was deliberately cut and edited to them, often approaching the level of a music video. If you play the first few notes of "Crazy Sunshine" or "Blues Drive Monster" or "I Think I Can," I get an immediate mental image of the corresponding scenes. Nothing in these newer projects has come anywhere close to that. Progressive was particularly bad with it, with clumsy music cuts and awkward lengthy silences, and Grunge felt like it was playing a Pillows Greatest Hits album at random in the background. Besides the basic fact that these new projects have struggled to even justify their existence, the worst thing about them is how little they seem to understand about what worked in the original and why.

(Man, it is such a sad statement about my watching habits that Shoegaze is the only thing on this preview guide I'm actively following or probably will follow...)

Ok, where was I... Overshoot! was better than the Ghost one, but like I said, not into car racing. I'm mildly curious about what the photographer's damage is, but not enough to find out. It kept bugging me the whole time that he was there to take pictures and instead wandered off to watch racing. And is he rich? They emphasized the money component of the hobby, but the previews suggest he's going to be sponsoring a team? oO

Dragnarok was...ok. Her fleshfang was weird since they sometimes drew it on top of a toothfang. Never seen that before, they usually pick one or the other. And I hate his blind eyes. Got nothing against blind people, it just reminds me of how creepy it is for sighted characters, like Haruka Nanami in Uta no Prince-sama. Also worst reason for dragon attacks ever. Trying to imagine the editorial meeting that let that pass. Not sure yet if it will pass the 3-ep test.

They had me worried at the start of Hunter x Gamer because I was afraid the luchador persona was going to be his avatar. Not sure the shoebill mask is much better (he does seem to favor half-naked avatars along with his screen name), but at least it's looking like there might be something to work with in the new game.

Which Witch is Which is not for me. The only chuckle it got out of me was the phoenix being jealous of the seedling and trying to be its sempai.

So the big question in Greed 'n' Gluttony is will his hunger be powerful enough to overcome having to hear the game voice declare "Gluttony skill has activated!" over and over when he's mass slaughtering? You'd think it would only need to say that the first time. And since that's apparently not the case, if they stop doing that, the question becomes why did it stop? No the real question is will I still be watching to find out. Not sure.

Twinx is off to a great start. The left twin is a cool cookie, smooth as caramel, sweet as chocolate, while the right twin is as soft as caramel over a sweet cookie, cloaked in silky secrets. I'll try both. Dunno which side I'll pick. I do wonder that the parents don't notice Hitori's part keeps changing sides every few minutes. Smile

Meitantei Man: the Legend of Ron has my attention. I don't know how his cat goes from flying through the air in terror to dead to the world in the space of 5 seconds. I also don't know why Ron isn't in jail for murdering all the culprits he's caught. Or why his name is Ron. But I'm intrigued, I liked the sorta chemistry between Ron and Toto, and they have names I can remember. My only beef with this episode is that even though I admit I have extremely limited experience with professional spoiler[hair stylists, I've never once had them wash my hair face down in the sink.] Who does that?

Super Shy might be too shy for me. Also I'm not that invested in where it looks like it might be going. But where the hell was Heart Man during the roller coaster rescue? He was there for the same personal appearance as Shy was. I'm also surprised that Rebecca questioned the space lady being able to breathe through a mask, after 3+ years of Covid. Wink

I'm Not in Love With the Villainess was briefly interesting, watching Rae kill Claire with kindness, but other than that I didn't find much to latch on to. It bothered me that it didn't give her one second's pause to realize she had died (of what?), and her only feeling on the matter was jubilation that she was reincarnated in her favorite game.

Demon Lord Sword Master of Academy for Sword Master Lords had the worst opening I've seen in ages. The dialog was terrible, the animation was terrible, the CGI was terrible, the wolf and Maoh designs were terrible, the ugly golden tree was ugly and terrible, the castle design was hideously bad, the chorale was absurd. By the time we got to the girls in the dungeon, who would be interchangeable with every other academy girls in over-designed uniforms in every other magic/sword academy anime, I had to bail.

Mid-Life Crisis VRMMO was incredibly bland, and I think it's just what the doctor ordered. Sure it makes no sense that, even if he were the first in the world to come up with cooking and making his own potions and bows, etc., others would not notice that immediately and do likewise. But somehow I found it all very relaxing to watch him do his thing without anything really pissing me off or making me think or anything. Weird. I think I'll take as needed for relief of headache and indigestion. Smile

Shangri-La's fun and I'll be watching it. It's been a while since there's been a VRMMO anime that interested me.

Firefighter Daigo seems to be a little bit on the divisive side here, but I'm firmly on the "really liked it" side, at least for it's premiere. I can see it not being for everybody and maybe even a little dull for some folks but while I loved Promare and enjoyed Fire Force it's nice to get a more realistic take on the genre, albeit still very anime in how it handles characterization.

On the other end of the spectrum of realism, Ragna Crimson was a ton of fun, even if I think the premiere being an hour wasn't entirely necessary. It did, however, mean the world is a bit more fleshed out then it would have otherwise been and the relationship between Ragna and Leo feels somewhat believable, which is nice. I feel like this is mostly going to be a "turn off your brain" show going forward and considering that it looks pretty solid visually means I'll at least be sticking around for a bit.

I decided to skip MF Ghost since I'm still in the middle of going through Initial D, so I'm glad Overtake! is as good as I expected to make up for it. Never doubt Ei Aoki to deliver a kinetically directed premiere with stellar character animation and great pacing. This is 100% going to be a character drama more then a racing show which is probably going to turn off some folks looking for a more standard F4 show but I for one can't wait. Easily one of my favourite premieres of the season so far.

Berserk of Gluttony is a hard pass. Garbage premiere across the board - looks ugly, zero interesting things in it's premise and ideas, and anything that takes place in a full fantasy world but has RPG mechanics makes me eyes roll back into my skull. Bye.

At the very least, Shangri-La Fantasy, in spite of it being a cliche storm premise wise, looks beautiful and is a blast to watch. This is the popcorn anime of the season for sure - junk food, yes, but delightfully tasty junk food that has you coming back for more. Appreciate that it has it's tongue firmly in it's cheek and not taking itself very seriously.

Lots of "meh" over Ron Kamonohashi which I get. I felt a little underwhelmed myself considering how much I love Reborn! and Akira Amano as a character designer, but I can't say I didn't hate it. I feel like this is one of those shows that could get better once it finds it's footing, and I like the character animation a lot, but right now it's one of the lesser premieres of the season for me.

Preaching to the choir and raving about how good Shy is. I know somebody who swears by the manga as one of the best currently running and while this first episode is mostly just setup, I'm engaged and hooked. Between this, Hanako-kun, Astra Lost in Space, and Scum's Wish, Masaomi Ando has become one of my favourite working directors and a one to watch.

As for The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy, stupidly long title aside, I actually... kind of liked it? It's like 3 shows in one and definitely has some lingering light novel-isms that will likely get really frustrating the further we get but that first episode was actually pretty competent compared to others of it's ilk. I'm also a massive fan of fantasy worlds that have actually technologically moved forward, and this seems to be a cool take on the idea. This will probably end up being not great the further it goes but I'll give it a chance.

I'm in Love with the Villainess is so much fun! Made me laugh throughout and I love how open it is about how she loves the villainess for who she is. None of this "I can fix her" stuff, which is refreshing. Dub is very good too.

The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy was more engaging for me than Ragna or Gluttony, enough so to earn it a tenuous shot next week, and it definitely comes down to that history. Bad guy that's secretly the hero? No, he really was The Hero until the Goddess of Rebellion (now that's an interesting title) won him over. Less hormonal fanservice, more world building fanservice please.

I don't even know where to begin with Migi & Dali, it's up there for the weirdest show of the season even knowing HYPNOSISMIC has yet to make its glorious return. The end of the episode made it clear that there's some sort of revenge plan at play, but the (literal) contortions in play to maintain appearances are just So Much, if not Too Much, for me. I bounced off of Sakamoto early, not sure how this'll fare for me. A+ Steve Jobs joke though, whether that's to the credit of the author or the translators.

Ron Kamonohashi's Forbidden Deductions would be perfectly watchable in a lighter season, but hoo boy, this is not that season. This one's gonna come down to how much time I end up having.

SHY got me aboard pretty quickly, that bit about the larger threat with the souls made me wonder if we're gonna see things escalate like Samurai Flamenco did (obviously not a bad thing). One hero per country though? No wonder Spirit drinks, with that much ground to cover.

I'm not in love with I'm in Love with the Villainess yet, but it's a villainess story so I'll give it a fair shake to see if the hounding wears thin or if it shifts into something more enjoyable.

I gave A Playthrough of a Certain Dude's VRMMO Life a shot on the hope, the hope, that it would be holding a really fun card close to its chest for the premiere. Alas, it was not. I did appreciate that the dude's life is so bland that they included a shot of him as an elementary school kid where a crowd of Teen Anime Protagonists run by in the background.

I'm in Love with the Villainess: It was fun! It’s not usually my cup of tea, and I didn’t have high expectations, but I kinda dug it. In a weird way, it reminded me a bit of My Clueless First Friend—only in how relentlessly upbeat both protagonists are, not for content or overall tone.

VRMMO Playthrough: I don’t understand why someone who works hard all day would want to then come home and slave away all evening cooking and making potions for strangers. That’s just not my idea of fun. I’m sure there’s more I could say but the whole thing was . . . just . . . so . . . zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Sword Master Academy: The first episode definitely had some decent world building, which makes me feel like the show has promise. But there’s also a lot of tropey baggage (ugh, those school uniforms). I’d like to give it a chance because I do like fantasy stories, but there might not be enough here for me.

I call these kinds of shows Accidental Iyashikei™️ (patent pending). Shows that are just the right mix of bland, stupid and light to allow you shut off your brain and just let it wash over you while you chill out and reset. Which shows qualify will be determined by each individual, but I usually find one or two promising candidates every season. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

The contrast between Shangri-La and middle aged dude adventures is rather staggering, yet I can see the appeal of both. The first offers plenty of fun frantic action and the latter is for those who love crafting and just doing the routine. I know people who are very serious in playing Farming Simulator and love the mundanity of it.

Migi & Dali is a weird show, I am unsure if it is gonna turn into a gory horror or if it is gonna be funny, or maybe both? Deranged Detective is a nice fix for my detective craving now that Undead Murder Farce is over and Sword Master School is one of those last bastion of humanity with a school that has girls with special powers shows, it has been a while since the last one.
