Now that the trailer for the latter film is up at http://www.apple.com/trailers/universal/van_helsing/, anyone think there are similarities between the two?

It's like...you have this apple...and then you have this orange...
All kidding aside, I don't see much relation aside from the running theme of vampiric creatures and a "badass" leading male with a hat. |

Well, I don't really find any similariteisiejsi between the two because they both are different stories.

Yeah, plus look at their choice of weapons: Van Helsing went with a crossbow (as seen on the movie poster) and Hellsing went with twin pistols... |

*blinks in disbelief*
"Hellsing went with twin pistols?" Um...did you seriously just...wait...GAH! That's like calling John McClane "DIE HARD" just because that's the movie's title! Highly annoying, if you haven't noticed. |

Of course there are going to be similarities. If I remember correctly, Van Helsing is a literary character in connection to the original Dracula book. The Hellsing organization from Hellsing was named for said character, so most likely they share some common roots.
Anyways, Visually, Van Helsing looks a little more like D from Vampire Hunter D. |

I'm going to wait till this movie comes on tape before seeing it because I just don't think I'll enjoy something that goes after Universal's version of Frankenstien's monster, and Quasimodo of Notre Damn.
Just a little bg on Van Hellsing so those hellsing fans who don't know can know where the name comes from: Van Hellsing was a monster hunter in some books of Bram Stoker *the Dracula guy*. So umm... prehaps Integra is a descendent of his. EDIT: deathbyrobot beat me to the literary history |

This is a possibility, but I doubt there's going to be any direct relation made in the movie, nor are any majour aspects of Hellsing and Van Helsing going to run parallel. Van Helsing takes place long before any Nazis ever existed, after all, and I wouldn't expect that the single sole ruination of the Hellsing TV series, Incognito, will be making any appearances, either. |

Hasn't it been said already quite a few times that Integra is a descendant of Van Helsing?

Now that someone says it, a few mentions of it comes to mind. And I was referring to Integra being a descendent on the Hellsing from the books, not the movie. I'm thinking she's his... great grandaughter or something. Now if there was a movie that was somewhat based off Hellsign, that'd be pretty damn cool. But when I'll watch this I'll just go "lalala, so this is Integra's grandpappy eh? He's hot." *is a Jackman fan* |

According to the manga Integra is Van Helsing's decendent, I'm not too sure how far down, but Great Granddaughter sounds about right. I hope most people do know that this movie has nothing to do with the anime/manga, right? A Hellsing movie would be great, not to mention a 2nd... OK Ok I won't say it, won't happen anyway...maybe... |

They'd have to start it right after the Valentine Brothers' appearance and follow the manga to the letter in order for it to be even remotely decent. |

I think it's possible to do from the end of the anime, it would look bad though.... spoiler[Queen releases Integra, she goes home, hires more soldiers, starts hunting freaks again. Enter Millenium. That and she does NOT take Alucard's offer.] But, I have the manga now, so I'll be ok That would be funny to see though. Opening screen to Hellsing 2: Integra had a horrible (and very long) nightmare and wakes up shortly after the insident with the Valentine Brothers. |

Hellsing had a very good start but an absolutely shitty finish. It was a damn shame.
