Quote: | Katsumi also raises the interesting question of whether or not Suenobu ever writes decent male characters into her stories. Between this, Limit, and Life 2: Giver/Taker, there is a distinct lack of positive men and boys in her works. |
I forget when exactly, but Ayumu and Hatori later gain a male friend/ally as part of their kindred circle--just a mild spoiler there.

Suenobu can't write positive male characters.

Intentional or not intentional, it is not misandry. Just because you feature evil men in your story, doesn't mean you have to also show positive or good men. This is not some litmus test.

Can't, or just doesn't want to?
She also doesn't write that many positive female characters either... I guess that's kinda the whole thing.

I read the LIFE manga ages ago and enjoyed it despite it's slight trashiness/OTTness at times.
I also watched the tv series which was quite good, but what I remember most is it had a reallllly great soundtrack.
I'm glad to see the series being reviewed here, and the review not being one that just writes it off as angst porn and stuff.

Right, sorry, that wasn't what I meant to imply (or say). It's just something that struck me, and is in no way intended to be a measure of her work. I phrased it badly.

I lived a bit too much of it to brush it off that way. I mean, it is OTT, but that's the way it feels to be in that position as a teenager.
