Tears of the Kingdon performance in Japan is incredible in a lot of ways:
- It had the best launch for a Zelda game since Zelda II: The Adventure of Link back on '87 which debuted at 616k copies, and just for comparison Breath of the Wild only did 238k at lauch with both the WiiU and Switch versions combined.
- TotK is already the second best-selling game in the series in Japan after BotW
- TotK had the seventh biggest launch for a game in Japan, surpassing games like Dragon Quest VIII and Monster Hunter Freedom 3.
We have to remember that the Zelda series was never that popular in Japan, only the first two Famicom games, A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time managed to sell over a million units, but Breath of the Wild managed to sell more than 3 million copies in its home country. Looking at TotK sales, the Zelda series has managed to achieved its "Monster Hunter Freedom 3 moment", as some people say, a game series that was popular now has exploded to even greater success. I don't think Final Fantasy XVI will manage to reach these numbers when it launches in Japan

Between Hogwarts Legacy and now this, single player games are still popular, despite what some companies might try to insist.

This is also something that some gamers have bought into.

I've barely been able to pull myself away from it since I picked it up last Friday. What a game.

Not really a fair comparison, since far more people in Japan own a Switch over PS5 (due to the Switch being out for three years longer, and lots of people in Japan preferring mobile gaming over home gaming).
