We'll probably see departures like this from time to time. I would guess that the Iowa location will be just for the warehouse and shipping, and the management will be handled by Crunchyroll staff located elsewhere.

Isn't that the result of CR's acquisition (also acquired by Sony...)? This causes everything to be jumbled up, adding the taxes to each order and doing away the hentai stuffs (I dunno which website to look for).

I assume so. Check the RS website. I think they have a blog post about where all the ero manga went.

It was supposed to go to the EroAnimeStore, but somebody took the feedback that was a bad name and it's all at buyanime.com, with miscellaneous non-H mixed in.

I know the regulators really don't look at smaller markets but it's sad that Sony/CR was allowed to create a monopoly in the anime/manga market like they have.

I'd love to know what the Dark Lord got for TRSI and the other stuff. Anybody know?

I mean, other than some previous articles mentioning that their Nozomi label has the franchise, nothing much has happened since then. (Such as the home video releases that were previously announced.) Other than, IIRC, a limited theatrical screening for one of the movies (or 2), a while back stateside.

Well, if you have read the article, the Dark Lord left his own company since 12/14/22. Haven't read/heard anything else after that.

They don't have a monopoly as long as Hidive and Netflix exist. Hell with the rise in popularity of Anime, even companies like Disney want some of the pie, leading to even a smaller chance of Sony developing a monopoly.

That's likely because we found out about those licenses very early on compared to most announcements. From what was mentioned by people familiar with the deal, the contracts were signed very shortly before those Otakon panels. Producing home video sets, possibly arranging streaming rights, etc. take a long time, so it's not surprising we haven't heard much on those titles Righstuf has so far. Same for All The Anime's Macross Plus license and AnimEigo's Macross II license. So far the only releases are Udon Entertainment's publishing Hidetaka Tenjin's "Artistry of Macross" art books, and those most certainly take less time to produce than blu-ray sets.

For a narrow and simple minded definition of monopoly... yes. But there's such a thing as a functional monopoly as well - when a single company controls so much of a given market that others in the market are functionally irrelevant. And that's the case with anime streaming. Sony/Crunchy is the proverbial 900lb gorilla, and the handful of competitors are 2lb Guinea pigs. Even collectively, they simply don't have the influence the singular gorilla does.
Yes, taken as a whole, Disney is a whole busload of 900lb gorillas. But like Amazon Strike, their anime division... isn't. (It's more of a hamster than a guinea pig.)

I've been deciphering production committes for fun for nearly 20 years now and was just recently thinking how crazy it was that Sony has a huge stake in anime WORLDWIDE. Domestically (in Japan), since the 80s, Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) (and its subsidiaries) has its hands in & partial ownership of myraid different titles. SPEJ as well to a smaller degree. Then you have outliers that aren't even necessarily visual or audio geared corporations, but maybe marketing companies or technology corps.
Right now, we have:
SMEJ (most recently My Hero Academia and it's movies)
Aniplex
A1 Pictures
Cloverworks
Rialto Entertainment (which is basically an Aniplex-helmed version of Lucent Pictures Entertainment, hence how Rialto [and especially Aniplex*] even got involved in the Berserk Memorial Edition from last year) *note: because Aniplex was previously NOT involved in the Berserk theatrical trilogy
SPEJ
Sony PCL
Sony Music Solutions (previously Sony Music Communications)
Everywhere otherwise we have Sony Pictures Entertainment and Crunchroll having the industry damn near in a stranglehold. Not to mention CR (and FUNimation) also being literal copywrite holders...
I agree that monopolies are trash, but at the same time, this stuff has always intrigued me.
Anyway, ignore me, I'm justing being a nerd lol. My point is Sony Corp as a whole owns a lot of shit.
