According to the media, a 17 year old is still a child.

It is a sad story.

Perhaps some anime is not fit for the American culture. For reason those things always happen in U.S., not UK, Japan, China or Canada.
It has happened in the UK already, though the media had nothing to do with that one, it was still just as tragic none the less, and so avoidable if the parents were more aware of the danger. But kids will be kids, and unfortunately this will not be the last time a child is killed because of its' actions. I will keep Codey and his surviving family in my prayers. Those other children who buried him will never forget that as long as they live, and should be watched closely for signs of delayed shock reaction syndrome, which one might feel so guilty about it that he/ she wants to join Codey out of overpowering remorse. So sad. Crying or Very sad

I agree with that sentiment they will need an eye kept on them and their reaction to this tragic accident.

The article from the BBC News site does show how dangerous sand is and that it is something parents need to think about when they have a sandbox in their backyard, much like you need ot be careful if you have a pool, even just a padding pool, out in the garden.

now that's sick: Codey's family has decided to honor his memory by donating his organs. how is that honoring anything. Thats pretty disturbing. ok, i died and my organs are taken away from my body
those are some sick parents.

Knowing that my sister's eyes allowed someone else to see I consider a beautiful thing, and I myself recieved donor tissue years later. Donating organs that could potentially save someone's life isn't sick honey.

The point is some people seem to think anime is way more popular than it actually is. Yes, there have been some minor, local incidents involving anime but a nationwide backlash against anime? I don't see it happening. Anime couldn't get you arrested in this country, unless maybe it involved child porn. And then the feds would be more interested in the live action stuff.

Besides, it won't be news worthy again until the funeral or if any public figures make any speeches about the incident imo.

I too see nothing wrong with organ donation. It will help save lives, so his death is not in vain. I'm sure they had to think very carefully about the choice also, so they cannot be criticized for doing what they deem is an honorable choice. These parents have my respects.

Gee whiz, what is wrong with kids today?

A sandbox?

I just hope that they don't start banning shows because kids are getting hurt. I don't think I could take that again. I just got through talking about this sort of thing to a friend.

So sad. My condolences to the parents of the child.

Before yesterday, I never thought that one could asphyxiate in a sandbox. There's like so innocent looking and ubiquitous.

As a young man raised in a miltary family who spent 3 years in Seattle I've got to say that I'm shocked at this. How exactly could a ten year kid emulate what he sees in an anime? At ten you should already know better!

Well umm.... I guess it's the parent's fault for neglect of not teaching their son that T.V. is fiction.

This is a tragedy to happen and I feel sorry for the familys loss. I dont agree however that you can entirely blame the cartoon like the news reporters did. Finding random videos from youtube of teenagers burying action figures, and unedited footage of Naruto, (not like whats shown on television). A child needs to understand through adults and common sense the differences between fantasy and reality. When I was little I watched tom and jerry and road runner and speed racer. Does that mean I stole a car or dropped anvils on people. no. I knew otherwise. So to blame only the cartoon would be wrong, for lack of other words. Many other factors have to be accounted.

I really think people should stop pointing fingers at the parents. I have not seen any information on what the adults were doing at the time and without a lot more information no blame can be made.

Any one who thinks children can be watched 24/7 probably never has had to deal with them on a regular basis. Anyone who says children should be watched all the time is welcome to get one and try it. And while there probably is some fault on the family or kid, I really doubt anyone here is in a position to make a judgment on it.

Someone mentioned this whole incident taking at least 30 minutes which is ridiculous. An adult could have been watching them, seen them digging a hole, and it wouldn't have taken that long in a foot deep sandbox. The adult could have gone inside for five minutes, to answer the phone, go the bathroom or even just getting something to drink. The kid could have jumped in the hole been covered up and within five minutes been in trouble. Suffocating as in no longer breathing on their own takes place in less than five minutes for a grown adult and could be less than two minutes for a ten year old. This is just an example, but the point is that it easily could be out of their control. Of course the adults could have been inside passed out from drinking there's no way to tell from the information I have seen.

It would also be nice if we waited to see if they were going to challenge anime before all the doomsday predictions.

edit:This does make sense it's just a little disorganized;
also removed something that I couldn't figure out how to say correctly.
