I will miss David Production nailing this remake and the entire cast, especially Lum.

Having never watched the original but knowing of its legend, I went into this with a blank slate and like you thought they nailed it 95% of the time. It always had me laughing at some point and the comedic timing was on point. I loved the madcap energy this series had and unless they put out OVA's or a random movie I'll miss these nutcase characters and especially the voice work of Sumire Uesaka's Lum-cha.

I kind of expect that no matter what this version did better, it would never get the finale as well as the original (which adapted the final arc as the 5th (and only canonical) movie). I think this is the kind of story that was meant for theaters.
Speaking of which. Fun idea that won't ever happen: David Productions can remake the movies of the original with their updated visuals and VAs. At least Beautiful Dreamer maybe? I doubt it, but it'd be fun. |

Ugh, please no. The original movies' visuals are good enough, especially movie 3 with Yûji Moriyama as animation director and Beautiful Dreamer. As much as I like the modern designs of the reboot and the colorful visuals, I can't imagine them to work for retelling the old movies (except Only you, maybe). |

Never got around to watching the original, so I went in to this blind and enjoyed it. I thought the series was pretty funny overall, though this last season was the weakest.
The relationship between the leads didn't really work for me though. Perhaps the build up was done better in the manga (I read that about a third of the chapters weren't adapted), but Lum tirelessly pursuing someone who wasn't interested in her (until late in this adaptation when he suddenly shows some interest/jealousy) and attacking him over it wore thin as the series went on. Maybe this series is really about how negative reinforcement can be effective? |

There isn’t all that much buildup in the manga — it’s more of a switch from the earliest chapters portraying Ataru as an ordinary guy with Lum as an unsympathetic pursuer (and Shinobu as Ataru’s girlfriend), to a more sympathetic Lum as Ataru becomes the world’s worst skirt-chaser. The new dynamic’s fairly set once Shinobu breaks up with Ataru.

I think there's a reason Beautiful Dreamer and the anime film version of the Final Chapter emerged from that, namely that everyone was frustrated with that status quo. Not sure if, with the shortened length, a remake of the former has the same impact. spoiler[Also it seems that the revamped ending keeps the same general beats, but cuts out the frustration of everyone around Ataru for refusing to commit either way. The manga ends with Ataru swearing he will never say he loves Lum out loud while getting pelted with trash, the movie ends with the town straight up sick of both their crap and prepared to lynch Ataru.] |

He actually says spoiler[he'll only tell her on his deathbed], meaning it's okay for Lum to spoiler[chase him until the end of his life.] What a twisted way of spoiler[expressing his love and affection towards her.] |

Looks like you don't agree. Can you expand further? I've been a fan of the original movies since the mid nineties and I'm fine with them. I don't remember anyone back then complaining about the visuals. The reboot visuals are fine, but I don't see them matching the movies which had a darker atmosphere, like Lum the forever. |

This is why I prefer the spoiler[town lynches them both ending. It at least channels the endless frustration the viewer feels towards a valid target while allowing Rumiko to stay true to the central gag of the series. She can stick with the gag, but the audience is sick of it and ready to show it.] It’s also why I think Yatsura’s ending is better than Ranma’s. |

Also, most of us simply like shiny NEW things. |

In other words, YOU don't like the look of the old movies and prefer new shiny designs. Good for you, but there are plenty of people who still prefer the old style, so don't make it out as if I belong to a minority. |

I watched all the way till that one collaboration special from 2008; I also added most characters to MAL database, and their pictures, including this one: https://myanimelist.net/character/54647/Super_Delicious_Planet_Golden_Special_Reserve_Gorg? - I see they shortened his name because it was breaking the page. There are literally countless old school characters (I'm talking about thousands of them) on MAL added by me over the years, and I can recognize the voice of most seiyu from 80s, 90s, and 2000s. I never watch remakes before watching originals, etc. Believe me, I spent more time with old school anime than most people, but I still live in the present, and I love seeing modern adaptations of old things. For me personally, no matter how amazing some old anime is, it is still not sacred enough for me not to wish its modern version, because in the end we are talking about different experiences, even if they cover the same source material. Btw, take a look at stats of UY movies, they really aren't all that popular. |

I'm still fine how the old movies are and the though of them being remade with the new visuals (and comedic timing) makes me shiver, especially Beautiful Dreamer. That's my opinion, you have yours. I have the right to state mine in response to that though experiment and I don't think I earned a short snarky remark from you in the first place, no matter how much you contributed to MAL and think you speak for the majority.
Older anime not being popular on a website which is mostly frequented by younger fans doesn't surprise me. Btw, I appreciate the effort you did to provide additional information for folks on MAL. |
