I saw this on the news earlier. It seems sad, I guess just lack of judgement when messing around with friends is to blame. I think we've all been there, but it usually doesnt end with someone dead.

Not to add anymore ripples to this pond, but I'm curious as to why everyone assumes the kid DIDN'T know what he was doing. Just because it ended tragically doesn't mean he was "too young to know it was dangerous". To make a bad and seemingly unconnected analogy, think of a drunk driver. An adult can go out to a bar, get totally smashed, get into a car, have an accident and die. Now that person knows that drinking and driving is a bad, life threatening idea, but they didn't expect it would happen to THEM. Maybe him and his friends had played the "bury my head in the sand" game before and it always turned out okay, but this time it didn't. All I'm saying is that maybe the kid wasn't naive. Maybe this was one time when the game went wrong. Doesn't change the fact that the result is horrible, but the first time something goes wrong usually isn't the first time that "something" has occured.

Organ donors are rare here especially for kids. So in his death, he will be helping more kids even though he won't be contributing more in life.
@Nomeru: As my sister was explaining to me this weekend in relation to Dr. Seuss of all things, kids imitate. And this is realistic violence that is being depicted. Not stretching to 10 meters (One Piece), not the Dragon Ball Z attacks. So these things can be imitated. The anime characters come out without a scratch in most cases but in reality you die. Like it or not this is the second death attributed to kids mimicking Naruto. Maybe they should raise the age rating on Naruto and/or schedule it at a later time with a disclaimer/warning. It's obvious that the current viewership can't handle the content imo. |

I feel so sad for his friends and family. It seems that the children rather blurred the lines of reality and fiction and clearly did not understand that unlike in an animation if you throw someone head frist in to a sandpit it is highly dangerous and should be avoided.
I do know that over here after power rangers has been on they announce don't do any of the stunts at home as they are done by trained martial artists or something. But how do you try and make all children understand that some of the things they see on TV are dangerous and they should not do them? As for what will happen to the anime well the age ranges will be increased and more attacks will be cut out for anything set to be shown for children, lets just hope they release uncut versions of any anime they cut down a huge amount for adults to buy, with a appropriate age certficate. |

I think donating organs after someone has passed away is a very good and honorable thing to do. Thousands of people in this country (including myself) are on waiting lists for an organ/s. By giving something you can no longer use to help save another person's life, thats amazing. And at least something good can come out of this tradgedy. |

So long as his family doesn't launch a Jihad against Anime or general Pop Culture. |

To be honest so do I. as has been pointed out, Kids injurred themselves trying to be Superman (or other comic heros), some have done it pretending to be Peter Pan If you werent aware of it, Comic Books have had censorships in place since the 50s due to violence, gore, sexual content etc, that basically said that if it didn't have a seal of approval it couldnt be sold http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comics_Code_Authority Now onto more recent stuff that I have remebered since I first heard of this today. in the 90s a kid torched a house and Beavis and Butthead were censored removing their depictions of fire and lighters etc. http://www.tvacres.com/censorship_beavis.htm Also there are those who have had Dungeons and Dragons blamed for killings, etc and general antisocial behavior. and now lets get to modern day, Some kid does a shooting and who do we hear from, Low and Behold Jack Thompson comes out from whichever rock he is hiding under and before the police have even finished an investigation he has claimed its because of Video Games. He can easily tie into this as there are Naruto Video games and he has also gone after Japanese consoles for allowingf violent games, granted Jack doesnt scare me. what scares me is there are people who group all anime in a stereotypical genre (we all know the genre so I wont list it off) I am worried that this will fuel them more and bring more negative attention to Anime by people who dont know better. And that could harm conventions because people could hold protests or venues could fall under the belief of that genre and decide that the convention isnt their thing and just deny them from using the space, etc. And with how Americans seem to file lawsuits at the drop of a hat over the stupidest of things, some winning these stupid lawsuits I can see Anime getting regulated like comics of the 50s. Now we are a LOT more Liberal than the 50s but remember, even Prohibition passed into Law. |

I find nothing wrong with the parents donationg his organs, which could easily save another life.
As i already said in the other thread i have 4 nephews between 4 and 10 and when they play outside, even inside the house aswell they always have someone close by to make sure they are ok, i was born in 81 so i grew up with transformers, GI joe etc and yes i did nearly fracture my skull twice but they didn't happened because i was imitating a show i saw on TV (first time i was 2 years old in my kitchen on top of a table and fell off hitting my head on a central heating radiator, second was due to falling down my stairs at 8 years old), i still can't grasp how a 10 year old boy wanted to be buried head first in sand. where were the parents at the time that made them unaware of thier child being buried head first in sand. |

Other people have said it, but I see this as a VERY honorable thing to do. Obviously you've never had anyone close to you have a second chance at life because of organ donors. I have. And I am an organ donor myself. I don't need them, so I may as well give them to someone that does. But, alas, this conversation is going in circles, so this will probably be my last reply. |

And it was amended a few years later. All that did was drive the need for Illegal sales of alcohol thru bootleg and moonshine. A regulation on the Anime industry would actually set the industry back, or at least till it was over turned. I doubt some of the Japanese companies would allow it to be licensed if its going to be heavily edited for content, as it would change the original picture of what the artist wanted. Oh lets not forget the extremely large fansub base this would create. If they thought it was bad now, try editing all the content and they would be lucky enough to sell one DvD. |

It's sad that a child died imitating something he saw on tv. My condolences to the family.
That being said I'm not worried about a backlash against Naruto. Cartoon Network still has Naruto on their website and as far as I can tell, are still airing it. They may decide however to post a disclaimer in future episodes. As for the news media, ann is the only place that I have been able to find a mention of this incident. No mention on AOL and I checked CNN's website last night and couldn't find it. I haven't seen anything about it on tv either. The point is some people seem to think anime is way more popular than it actually is. Yes, there have been some minor, local incidents involving anime but a nationwide backlash against anime? I don't see it happening. Anime couldn't get you arrested in this country, unless maybe it involved child porn. And then the feds would be more interested in the live action stuff. |

Granted with changes in attitudes, it may no longer hold, but back in High School (in the 1970's ), in one of my science classes the teacher pointed out in society there were more women than men, not that this is true at birth since on the average, there should be a fairly even amount of males & females born, but by adulthood, more males have died due to risky behavior. I know my male cousins were always doing wild things I'd never do (jumping off a shed netted my cousin a hole in his tongue. Putting gas in a bottle with alka seltzer & shaking it netted him some stiches to his stomach. He actually is still alive for all the risks he went for)
As I said, maybe it's evened out now, & maybe these parents will get on their soapbox & proclaim the evils of Naruto, but realistically I don't see it taking because most of us do know kids will be kids & do STUPID-flat out brain-off stuff. Some more than others. I know my daughter did a certain amount of testing--I don't know if it's to prove their parents are wrong, or the kids feel the laws of nature don't apply to them (a co-worker has the "I'm faster/smarter/better" rule he insists our drug addicts have. Yes, they know the negatives of drug use, but each honestly believes they can overcome the odds or the odds don't apply to them. I say it's the "Won't happen to me" syndrome) Where were the parents? A 10 yr old is expected to be able to play on his own for hours & hours. One would expect a 10 yr old to know better. One would hope SOMEONE out of the 5 kids involved would have said "No, that's dangerous!" or "How will you breath?" Obviously not. We talk to our kids about not putting plastic bags over their heads because they might suffocate, but kids do it. Look at the old abandoned fridge thing with all of us being warned thru Public service announcements to unhinge the door ot lock the things shut. One can only go so far in childproofing the world. Perfectly normal, intelligent people do stupid stuff all the time. Look at the governor of NY. He's an adult. He had to know the consequences of his actions, yet he engaged in an activity that's going to likely cost him his job & he's way old enough to know better. A kid that is at the top of his class can do stuff he knows better than doing. Look at kids playing with fire burning down stuff (not talking arsonists)--they know fire is dangerous, but they believe they are in control until they aren't. We had a horrible incident recently where a 17 yr old picked up a can of gasoline & threw it on a fire dying in a fireplace only for the fire to follow the gas back to the teen who dropped the can & everyone (couple more teens & the grandparents) ran out of the home leaving 3 children under the age of 6 sleeping in a bedroom to die in the burning house. One would think someone knew better & someone else would think to get the babies out first. Obviously not. Is a 17 yr old not deemed mature enough to babysit younger children? People do stupid stuff all the time. |
