I believe Asato did a prose version in the blu-ray releases for the anime.
I hope Yen Press releases the spinoff manga's at some point. |

I want a season 2 but I'm also up for this spin-off.

Now this looks fun. I love 86 but his spinoffs are quite good too. Guess this will savor my 86 s2 appetite for now.

Ugh there's that suicide bomber description again from the early Yen Press announcement before they had gotten a better description for the series.
Might be a better idea to take description they have for volume 1 now (https://yenpress.com/9781975303129/86-eighty-six-vol-1-light-novel/)
Or take the description from animenewsnetwork.com/news/2020-03-22/86-sci-fi-battle-anime-reveals-cast-staff-2020-premiere/.157809

Man I love 86 probably my favorite light novel series and I love seeing these spin offs you wouldn’t expect.

I dunno; the high school one was entirely predictable (given the age of the characters), and casting Lena as a magical girl isn't a huge stretch, either. My one concern is how serious they will keep this version, but hey, Attack on Titan Jr. High was a thing, so. . . Either way, I'll be checking it out if an English version ever becomes available. |

I want Shin as their Tuxedo Mask equivalent. Lena would be powerless... |

While the anime was running, the discussion had a lot of enthusiastic chatter about the novels. I'm not much of a fiction reader (90% of the fiction I consume, I consume on audiobooks at the gym or while running errands), so I was tantalized, but never acted on that chatter.
Then I took a listen to the audiobooks (the first three volumes are out, covering basically the two seasons of the anime). Anime audiobooks have a tendency to be over-acted and too dub-like for my tastes, but these are excellent. I recommend them. I think knowledge of the books improves the anime experience a ton. Magical Girl Lena, as Key says, Is not that big a stretch. I do like the Shin Tuxedo Mask idea. |

I don't know, 86 and the magical girl genre isn't something that I can see mixing well.

Ugg. Maybe they should focus more on the 86 anime then writing silly spin-offs with magical girls. 86 was good for the season it aired, but I don't think it holds a candle to other mecha, especially with the depth of the writing. I'm on board with this 86 train but I want it to get better.

Setting aside for the moment that I wouldn't consider 86 to be a true mecha series, name one from the past 15 years that's better on any front. Technical merits, action staging, use of music, emotional impact, thematic depth and follow-through, use of symbolism, character establishment and development, even character design - the anime version nails them all. It's one of the best series of any type from the past several years, so I'm not sure what you're expecting here. |
