I havn't watched The Simpsons in a few years but I'm probally going to watch this one...
And I do have to give some praise to the animators... most of the background characters are genric background character but in one point I saw a quick shot of Sherri and Terri and when the video ends you can see Disco Stu and it helps that he can be seen very easilly as it stops with him clearly in it. It took me a few seconds to notice him and I laughed at it.

The Simpsons Comics already made a Death Note parody done in a manga style in Treehouse of Horror #14, in a story called "Murder He Wrote", though Bart was the protagonist, it was actually pretty funny, though the animated staff never adapted a comic story into the show directly, which is a shame beacuse the comics had tons of great stories. Speaking about this special, all the characters look pretty cool in this anime style, but I think it'll be pretty weird hearing the show cast voicing anime-styled characters, don't know if the The Simpsons voice cast has done anime before, the only one I can remember is the late Phil Hartman (Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz) who voiced Jiji in Kiki's Delivery Service English dub. Though I grew up watching the Simpsons in Neutral Spanish and most of the dub cast has tons of experience dubbing anime: Lisa is voiced by Patricia Acevedo who is also well known for voicing Lisa Hayes in Robotech and Usagi Tsukino in Sailor Moon; Homer is voiced by Humberto Velez, who voiced Issac Gilmore in Cyborg 009 and Nambu in Megalo Box; Bart's and Marge current actress, Caludia Motta, voiced Orihime in Bleach and Dai in the new Adventure of Dai; Bart's original actress, Marina Huerta, voiced Dai in the 90s anime and Misa Hayase in Macross DYRL. Interestingly, L's LatAm voice actor, Hugo Nuñez, voiced Nelson Muntz from season 17 to 25.

Im happy for the acknowledgement and all but is there any other anime they can pay homage too? at this point it feels like death note has been overdone in the western media scene.

Two decades? But the Death Note manga came out in 2003 and the anime in 2006. I mean The Treehouses of Horror specials have made parodies of movies that were pretty old like King Kong, The Shining, The Fly, etc. Just because Death Note ended years ago it doesn't mean you can't make a parody, the story it's a modern classic.

Don't know if Death Note has been overdone, though I think World of Gumball made a Death Note parody as well. At least it's different from the same old parodies that appear in western cartoons, it seems like everytime they referenced an anime it was Speed Racer, Pokémon, Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball, though more modern shows make more references to the Ghibli films, GitS, Utena, JoJo, among others. There's plenty of young western animators/artists probably grew up watching anime but, even as a kid, I felt that many anime parodies in cartoons fell a bit flat, the same jokes about mechas, colorful hair, transformations, etc. On the other hand, you barely see cartoon parodies in anime, however I've seen plenty of homages to Wacky Races in some shows, and the staff at Trigger seem to know a lot about modern cartoons.

i have to give them credit for capturing the animation style of Death Note but this parody comes across as a bit too on the nose. The best anime homages in The Simpsons have been little short random homages in the episode that I don't know if this can be carried well enough for an entire episode or at least half an episode. This feels like they should have done it as one of those shorts they do for Disney+ .

That's one year away from when Death Note came out so it is practically speaking two decades ago. It is weird to think about Death Note being two decades old though so I understand being surprised it's that old.

Nancy Cartwright (Bart), has was the purple haired page in Little Nemo - Adventures in Slumberland, and when you take into account that Santa's Little Helper & Snowball II are voiced by the ever prolific Frank Welker who's voice a bunch of anime characters, especially animals / beasts (notably Totoro) as well as of course lots of Transfomers there's two at least.

Making a parody of something old feels better to me for some reason. I can't imagine a Treehouse of horror parody from back in the early 2010s being very good.

I haven't watched The Simpsons in over a decade. This has me so interested that I'll watch it. This is awesome.

I've been looking forward to this ever since the image leaked back during the summer. I have recently watched last Season and with a few exceptions, each episode has been really good. In fact, A Serious Flanders from last season is almost as good as a golden era episode. With this new season I'm starting to believe we are entering a Renaissance of the series.

The Treehouse of Horror segments from the last 10 or so years have made parodies of then recent movies and some of them weren't that great, sometimes they didn't parody horror movies, just "recent" movies like Parasite, Mr. and Ms. Smith, Avatar, anything that was popular at the time. That reminds me something John Swartzwelder, one of The Simpsons' most prolific writers, said that it was better to make references to old things, since they usually feel more timeless. It's kind of weird how in recent episodes characters like Homer and Lisa make references to TikTok and Netflix, especially since other writers have confirmed that they tried to avoid making references to new technologies in the older seasons.
