My problem with this franchise is that I have not read any of the source material and I watch each season once as it comes out. That, coupled with my notoriously bad memory, means I simply forget a whole bunch of stuff which makes watching a... challenge.

I'm in a similar position. I don't even remember how this Sorcerer Kingdom thingy was founded. Did Ainz conquer another nation at some point? Or did he build all the buildings? I don't remember.

The show's still enjoyable though. As always everyone interpreting Ainz's every word and move as some kind of godly plan is hilarious. Dude can't sigh without someone feeling responsible for it.

And yeah the dude trying to court Albedo may have just signed his death warrant. I'd feel bad for him but he seems kinda scummy.

^Perfect reason to re-watch Anime smile Personally I rewatched the 3rd season for a refresher (I had already rewatched the other two a few times before, so I was good on that (and was rewatching other things))

I'm surprised that guy wasn't dead the moment those doors opened Laughing

Right at the start the peculiar rod Albedo has been wielding in the OP and from last week's episode onwards is explained to viewers. Ainz has always been cautious, and after season 1's accidental mishap he's not going to be caught dead making the same mistake in letting his precious minions get mind-controlled by hostile forces. Interesting that Albedo is immune to most diseases in her previous incarnation as a game NPC, although Momonga's change in her character setting has afflicted her with probably the most troublesome disease of them all which Ainz alone has the cure for. Again, I'm surprised Ainz didn't chastise her for using the wrong form of address before she departed, but he's wont to spoil his minions when there's no harm done.

At long last non-source material viewers finally see who's running the mysterious Slane Theocracy introduced back in season one. Powerful enough to mind-control undead monsters, its history is so long that it has the supposedly larger Empire under its thumb and has been the secret bankroller of E-Restize for decades. The Cardinals are in charge of the four Greek elements plus Light and Darkness, and they appear to favour subterfuge instead of using their faith as a steamroller against their neighbours. Their martial assets are clearly a cut above what Ainz and co. have had to face to date, what with the mysterious female warrior making cameos in seasons 2 and 3, an ancient dragon and a pair of "God-Kin" capable of taking on and beating an army of Death Knights that has most kingdoms suing for peace instead of risking battle. Like Ainz, they're also cautious and want more information before they commit to his destruction. I wonder if Demiurge is working against the Theocracy at present, since he's not shown himself yet in this season and is also working covertly with Ainz's blessing.

It's the Bloody Emperor with the impossibly long name again after last season's brief introduction. Turns out he's afflicted with stress-induced hair loss, but he's not giving up trying to take out Ainz and his kingdom. His kingdom has capable adventurers for hire, but will they stand against Ainz and his party for long if push came to shove? Right now he's no more than a helpless spectator in the upcoming arena challenge.

My reaction upon hearing the identity of the challenger was exactly the same as the Emperor's, and I'm betting a lot of viewers were thinking the same thing (assuming they didn't know about this beforehand). Out of the blue we have the season's first action set-piece, hopefully the animators do not disappoint. I don't know if Ainz's sudden appearance was his own initiative, a whim borne out of fancy, information provided to him which he acted upon in the most opportune manner or him going along with Demiurge's plan (who obviously caught wind of what was to happen long beforehand). Ainz has fought a troll before, but that was a wild variant with no armour and no training in martial arts. This is much more of a challenge, so how much of a handicap Ainz has given himself prior to the battle should be interesting. I do not expect Ainz to lose this battle; it's a question of how quickly he wins and what kind of an impression he imposes on the whole colosseum and its panic-stricken Emperor when he does.

I'm no master strategist, but holding a top, top, top secret meeting in your open air viewing box in a coliseum filled with thousands of spectators may *not* be the shrewdest move. Unless the calculation is, "hur-hur-hur, nobody would think I'm stupid enough to do this so it's the perfect camouflage!" In any case, I suspect the emperor's hair loss is not being caused by the pressure of an abundance of brains pushing against his skull.

Yeah, I was thinking the same, that the possibilities of out of the open that random people could see, is not exactly secret. I could only think along the lines of a world where magic scrying could be so common place, that it would have to be a moment where a scryer would not consider that a secret meeting is taking place.

If you'd told me Ainz was in the colosseum through a combination of whimsical fancy and fortuitous circumstance, I wouldn't have believed you. After watching this episode, I have to admit Ainz must have had one of the game server's highest luck stat which was transferred in full to the new world.

It looks like Ainz is going forward with his own pet plan of getting adventurers to explore the world for him. He'll get information from their exploits and will pay them in kind with healing, resurrection, finances and so on. Not a bad idea, since he's already admitted his own minions' intelligence gathering has hit a wall and he hasn't given up on finding fellow ex-players who carved out a niche for themselves in the new world. The runic sword he examined must mean something in the game world, since he was very surprised to see it but now has a lead he can follow up on.

As for the actual duel, the result was never going to be in doubt seeing Ainz's previous exploits. The only battle encounter he was every in any trouble in was against Shalltear, and that was because of circumstances and several significant handicaps he had to shoulder. Unlike the previous troll encounter, this one posed more of a challenge and is more satisfying for Ainz because of the calibre of his opponent. Not only is the Troll gladiator much stronger than the previous dimwit, he's also honourable and a worthy asset now that the pre-duel agreement is honoured in full. The rules of the duel were probably too lax; but they had to concede the fact that Ainz is a magic caster and cannot be completely banned from using some magic during fights, so long as he still wields weapons to wound his foe with.

The Emperor has really thrown in the towel. He's so cornered by the convergence of factors that his subordinate's suggestion that it was pure coincidence was dismissed immediately as an impossibility. If his offer really goes through, his head will roll and land at the feet of the Theocracy and he knows it. But he sees no other option given the spectacle he witnessed (and cheered unashamedly with no shred of dignity). Ainz having forced an outcome he wasn't anticipating will buy time, but what he really should worry about is whether Demiurgos and the others will have to alter their carefully laid plans to accommodate this wild card. If they do, will it breed dissatisfaction as Ainz reveals he's not the Supreme Being they're making him out to be?

Did he actually use any magic when fighting though? I was under the impression that the negative energy touch was just a feature of his class of undead.

The short stabbing swords (which seem similar to estocs) looked to be identical to the ones that Clementine (the woman who kidnapped Nphelia, killed Tsuare's sister, and whom the Slane Cardinals referred to as the Windstrider in episode 3 of this season) used when she fought Momon in episode 9 of the first season. I'm pretty sure that's why Ainz said he got them from Momon who had defeated her, officially). The explosive flame attack was a feature of one of her short swords (another had a lightning attack). Clementine used both against Momon/Ainz when she fought him and she was was very surprised that they did not kill him.

Ainz asked Fluder to tell him about the Warrior King and I'm sure Fluder would have mentioned that he was a troll. It would be logical for Ainz to select weapons that included flame attacks/damage to counter the troll's self-healing factor. The pole arm he started with was likely also selected because of its flame attack/damage.

At the end of the duel, Ainz just activated the same High Tiered Physical Nullification skill that he used in Ep. 4 of the first season. He explained then that: "It's a passive skill that completely nullifies the physical attacks of low-leveled weapons and monsters". Despite how strong the Warrior King is, compared to Ainz who is level 100, he is low-leveled.

I haven't read the novels, this is all info from the Anime. I re-watched the first 3 seasons before the 4 season started.

You are correct regarding the choice of weapons and the physical immune skill, but my nitpick is with his touch attack. Sure, one can justify it as an innate skill he has as an Undead Overlord the same way his opponent can use Martial Arts like Gazeff and Brain after training, but it feels like a loophole he's exploiting since it's clearly magical in nature.

Yes, Ainz does not use magic in the traditional sense during the duel. No fireballs, lightning strikes etc. being issued from his fingertips. He even says he's handicapping himself by disabling his skills and restricting himself to a choice of equipment. Yet he also states his level is so high an opponent of the troll's calibre would have no chance against him regardless. He has no issue using his weapons to strike at his opponent's unarmoured body parts, so it's not like he needs the extra gimmicks from the weapons to gain an edge.

In hindsight, he did want to put on a show for the audience as part of his grand marketing pitch. Given the pledge he made back at the mansion, I was probably hoping too much he'd follow it through in spirit, not just in words.

Straight into the next arc, now that Albedo and Demiurge have officially given carte blanche to handle the Empire's submission into vassalage. I still think Ainz is making a mistake in not handling this personally, since his two subordinates are going to take things far beyond his expectations and they're going to ask for praise when it's all finished.

Cameo from Cocytus and the Lizards, with the main pairing back when the Lizards were introduced having started a family since we last saw them. They are still wary of Ainz, but so long as he doesn't harm them directly they'll do what he tasked them to do without complaints. That being said, Cocytus has done his job in ruling over his new charges and getting them to stay loyal to Ainz's empire (nice statue!).

So there are dwarves, but they're having trouble against a metal-eating species which nullifies their greatest advantage. Ainz is again immensely fortunate that such an opportunity has literally fallen into his lap. He needs to hurry though, since his diplomatic overture will be for naught if the target audience is slaughtered by invaders. If he handles it well, he can gain both the Dwarfes and the Quanoa as his subordinates/partners depending on negotiations.

Again there are slight differences between Momonga's game world and Ainz's new world. The rune he used was recognised, but Ainz admitted some of the runes on the sword he handled previously were not quite what he expected. Not sure how far the adaptation plans to explore this, but if Ainz succeeds in his aim of reviving the rune industry it's going to be massive for his adventurer training academy (high-quality enchanted equipment industrially produced at low cost!)

Am I the only one who thinks Ainz's magic is ridiculously versatile? He can summon a tower with numbered rooms capable of housing a small army in seconds, while the rest of his army simply gawps at his prowess. Not only is the Tower huge, it's properly furnished with fancy doors and windows providing a good view of the surroundings.

This is building up nicely. As expected, Ainz arrives with impeccable timing and is able to extract the maximum benefit from his negotiations with the Dwarf Kingdom. He wants runesmiths, and he'll get them so long as he gets the Quagoas to bend knee or be exterminated. I'm not doubting the final result, but the process in which he achieves this outcome is going to be very interesting.

I don't envy the Dwarf position. It's slow but definite annihilation if they refused the offer, or potentially sacrilegious servitude to an Undead Overlord upon acceptance of the terms. They chose the latter, after all living comes first and what happens to them afterwards when Ainz gets his way is still not set in stone for them.

Another example of Nazarick in a high-magic world being transplanted to a low-magic one on display when Ainz pulls out his 20-rune artifact to impress the runesmiths. If their Golden Age could only do a maximum of six and the art is on a decline, then Ainz has a REALLY low base to work from. Time however is not a problem for the immortal undead.

I'm betting Aura figured out what happened to the Death Knights, since Ainz's caution precludes him from considering the Death Knights met their end because the bridge they were on was collapsed deliberately by their Quagoa victims. Said victims for their part do not recognise the Death Knights for what they are, so if Ainz is correct about Death Knights requiring level 45 players to comfortably beat then he's going to have a walkover by the time he reaches the Capital.

Of interest is the Frost Dragon. There's a brief reminder of Season 1 when Momon was figuring out the environs, but it's been years in the real world since and the only thing we viewers see of dragons so far is in the OP animation. How much of a challenge the dragons will be is up for debate, since Undead typically don't have issues against ice damage in many fantasy lores and Ainz has enough high-level magic to make it work against traditionally magic-resistance foes.

One thing the series will never answer is how the Quagoas can invade the Dwarf Kingdom despite the obstacles barring their path (which Ainz has effortlessly cleared through magic). United as they are, monster-infested lava lakes and poison-filled labyrinths aren't exactly pushovers to get through. I suppose one will need to read the novels to see if this aspect was explained.

I thought that Sebas was supposed to be a dragon?

In terms of D&D, which Overlord seems to have a lot of references to. The Quagoa kind of feel like a fusion of kobolds and gnoll. Kobolds tend to have that underground invading horde that like treasure thing going on them, and can be more crafty than they might appear, especially when a dragon might be involved. Although the Japanese seem to like to show them as more canine rather than draconic. While Gnoll as hyena monsters look the more part, while usually more of a mindless horde unless under leadership of something like one of their own empowered by their patron demon lord.

竜人 is Sebas Tian's species, which has been erroneously translated as Dragon ignoring the humanoid modifier at the end. I prefer the term Draconian from an old fantasy game I played previously.

Dragons and Draconians have similarities, but calling the latter the former is an insult to Dragonkind. Sebas Tian cannot breathe fire nor fly; outside of his monk abilities there hasn't been much indication in the animated adaptations he's anything more than a human.

So as usual things go very smoothly and easily for the Skeleton with 3,000 Different Names. Pretty convenient that the Dwarves just HAPPEN to be menaced by a vicious enemy at the exact time that Gown wants to establish good relations with them. And of course an entire Empire would want to become a vassal state of his 5-minute old kingdom after he (naturally) beats the Warrior King. But oh noes! Now he has the hassle of dealing with a surrendering state! Such are the travails of the OverPowered.

The outcome was never in doubt, but the process in which the outcome was derived continues to be a source of great entertainment for uninitiated viewers.

Before viewers bring up the old argument that Ainz is so overpowered that he could have sneezed at his opposition and still won, a few things to note from this episode:

1. The Quagoa tribe lord was operating on the basis of incomplete and faulty information, so he expected his level of opposition to be several golems, not an Undead Overlord and Elder Vampire. He was cautious enough to even request the help of his Dragon Patron for combat assistance, which he assumed was enough to defeat the expected intruders. After his scouts reported the submission of the Dragon advance guard, he still brought out 60,000 of his own warriors including a selection of elites to fight. Despite losing in the end, he kept his position because he did not surrender unconditionally and he's not given up the hope of his kind rising up again for independence.
2. The White Dragon Patriarch isn't stupid either, but he too underestimated his foe expecting a group of dwarves. His bookish son on the other hand has sufficient intelligence to recognise a superior being who should not be fought, and promptly surrendered before the spell could be cast. Had the White Dragon Patriarch understood what he was really fighting against, he would have mustered all twenty three Dragons in the Dwarf Hold to attack at the same time. As strong as Ainz is, his spell is only effective against one target and it would be less of a walkover taking on multiple dragons at once. Even if Ainz had prevailed against all of the Dragons in an epic battle royale, the collateral damage to the Hold would have ruined his aim of getting the runesmiths to work in his kingdom willingly.

It now makes sense why the Quagoa were able to effectively dominate the dwarves, regardless of their natural advantages against metal. Having a White Dragon tribe as your backer really helps in military terms, since unlike Ainz almost every species on this world is fighting a losing battle in a long war against multiple dragons set on seizing the treasure hoard. The route to the capital from the current dwarf holdout was the most direct one, but taking the long way round and slowly squeezing the dwarves through territorial denial would have allowed the Quagoa to maintain supply lines and an invasion force of significant numbers without risking them through the hazards. After all, last week's captain made it back to the capital long before Ainz and the others did with their magic assistance.

It's not a complete victory for Ainz though. The Quagoa tribe king has not fully submitted despite his earlier supplication, the majority of dragons still survive out of fear of Ainz's magic so will happily rebel if his magic is rendered ineffective or he's incapacitated and his underlings have openly been told he's not omnipotent nor omniscient. That final point in particular ties in with the bridge incident; Ainz eventually realised what Aura figured out last week but at the very last moment. Thanks to Aura's unintended cooperation, Ainz has dodged a bullet and maintains his facade of absolute competence. To be fair to Ainz, his strategy of deliberately maintaining an appearance of weakness was the very thing the Quagoa tribe leader lamented right at the end before his submission. Ainz might well be lucky and overpowered, but the reasoning behind his overly cautious strategy is underpinned by how successful it is when he is completely underestimated.

Grasp Heart: Ainz hasn't used it since season 1 and it's one of his higher level spells to boot. He did say he would have retreated and become a hermit had his first attempt been resisted in the new world. At least he knows his spells overcome dragon magic resistance in this world, although I'm sure he would have preferred more than two dragon carcasses for harvesting.
