I recall hearing that this got made because the Medicine Seller was really popular in Ayakashi - Samurai Horror Tales with female viewers. So I suppose that's the sort of men woman in Japan like.

Did the physical release go OOP?
I guess it has to have done. It was forever being sold for like $10 everywhere but I accidentally noticed someone on eBay trying to sell it for $150 and thinking they must be stupid... but no, while most of the solds of the past couple months are cheap, there are only super expensive sets for sale right now. |

I think it had been OOP for a while now, but just a few months ago it was still being sold on Amazon for less than $20, while now they look to all be gone. Guess the movie announcement got people buying what was left. |

Mononoke sold far more DVDs than any other show on noitaminA at the time, even Nodame Cantabile.
Mononoke was available in the US as a DVD from cinedigm for some while. The "Bake Neko" arc of Ayakashi Samurai Horror Tales was also available as a DVD under the moniker "Goblin Cat." They are now hard to find and often quite expensive. Crunchyroll streamed the cinedigm version, but it is no longer there. The complete fifteen-episode Japanese Blu-ray re-release is still available though expensive, and some Amazon sellers will ship to the US. No English subtitles, of course. The original series aired in the widescreen "HI-VISION" format that was common to shows produced as the transition to full HDTV took place. The two fansubbed versions of Mononoke were in 720p. |
