Something I'm now wondering, with the FUNimation brand being phased out in favor of Crunchyroll, what's going to happen to the hundreds of in-print releases? When they get reprinted, are they going to replace the FUNimation logo with the Crunchyroll one, or are they going to have to re-release everything, possibly under a new UPC prefix? All FUNimation releases start with 704400.

End of an era. I would thought they would keep Funimation branding in some way, at least for home releases. I think its a waste to lose it. But if they feel Crunchyroll brand can do it all, I guess its the way to go.

One thing I'm wondering about that hasn't been brought up yet is what's going to happen to Aniplex USA? With Funimation's branding apparently going to be phase out eventually and everything moving under Crunchyroll's branding, will all Aniplex titles be distributed by Crunchyroll in physical releases without the expensive pricing or boutique features or will Aniplex USA continue to operate separately and release all the titles under Aniplex Japan?

I wonder what this means for those with annual subscriptions to Funimation (be it Funimation native subs or those of us who got dragged over from AnimeLab), and still have a sizeable amount of their annual subscriptions to run. I for one am in this boat and have an existing annual subscription to Crunchyroll as well. I won't be happy if a cent of my annual AnimeLab/Funimation subscription just disappears into the ether with nothing to show for it.

The article does mention contacting support to see if you can get your time transferred. |

If they are going to essentially end Funimation as we knew it/them, then transferring as many of the uncensored versions of shows streaming on FuniNow would be a way to properly do that. Now, if it is a show that Funi is streaming that for whatever reasons Funi doesn't have the rights to the uncensored versions for, understandable.

Strange. To me, Funimation is the premium brand since they've done theatrical releases... Why give up this image? Well maybe I'm the only one who thinks that way

The mere fact that Sony is still figuring out how to merge both services into one talks about how presumptive, unprepared and how dumb this decision ia. I like the statement that no one is getting laid off my but the funimation translators are no longer getting work because of a higher wage. This entire merger is dumb. Im pretty sure this whole logistic nightmare and layoff is just because Sony want to flex they have the biggest anime catalog. So I can only imagine a bares member waking up and thinking, “You know what would be dope and subscribers would be flocking to sign up if we marketed Crunchyroll as the service with biggest anime catalog in the world”. They gotta figure out the whole dubbing situation between Texas and La, figure out how to implement funimation services into crunchyroll terrible interface for dubs, figure out how to implement funimation digital compied
Into crunchyroll, figure out the warehouse logistics between both store fronts. Whoever made this decision was dumb. They had like two years since the proposal to set out a plan for a merger and the best they got is we will figure it out. But that’s management and corporate. I would have probably just started by separating the dubs and dubs between funimation and crunchyroll, figure out the logistics between dubbing studios and voice actors contracts, then work on having identical interfaces between crunchyroll and funimation, while figure out the logistics on how distribution and manufacturing would work for both store fronts. Once funimation and crunchyroll interface and GUI has been streamlined to look identical, store fronts has been merge to one entity, and dubbing contract and translation have been taken care then merging and porting content would be a lot easier as both services would look identical snd Not having to tell customer “ idk bro we will Figure out” |

I would advise you to avoid larger anime conventions at all costs. When certain companies are given free and/or premium booth space simply because the convention believes that those companies draw attendees, any chance at having a fun event catering to anime fan attendees has been lost. I am not going to miss that large Funimation booth that was at every convention. Nothing of value was lost. |

Contact Funi's customer support about it. I still have 10 months left on my subscription and messaged on March 1st, and was told to provide both my Funi email and CR email and they'd manually add those extra months onto my CR subscription. I was told on the 3rd that their "escalation specialist" (I don't think that's a real thing?) would finish up and contact me shortly. That was the last I heard from them, and my CR subscription is still only showing those initial two months so who knows how long it'll be. I know they must be getting slammed with questions and subscription requests, but I also feel like they should have known this was coming and done a better job of planning how to transition their users who already paid them in advance. The fact that we have to be the ones to reach out to them first, instead of them just automatically granting us those extended CR subscriptions by default, is kinda ridiculous. It does sting that we're losing Funimation as a brand when it's been a constant presence since practically the beginning of the US anime industry. I mean yeah, technically it's still the same company just with a different name, but it still seems weird to see them ditch the name after such a long history with it. |

Well, Geneon itself was previously well known and established as Pioneer before deciding to rebrand. In this case while being younger Crunchyroll is well known name and a brand worth more than Funimation at time of acquisition I believe.
It’s not true that they have no presence as even before the merger they held many home video licenses and over the years have entered into a few different partnerships to distribute them, from Shinkai DVDs with Bandai to cobranded discs with Funimation like Re:Zero. |

Please God, no closed caption subtitles. I'm begging you, crunchyroll. They're always tougher to read and awkwardly timed.

I know a lot of people don’t love how Crunchyroll posted the dub version as a separate “season”, but I love it because it keeps track of what I’ve watched that way.
For instance, at one point I was watching the Golden Kamuy sub with my brother, and the dub with a friend. It was so hard to keep track of where I was with each version on Funimation because they don’t differentiate between the two. But Crunchyroll’s lack of closed captions for dub versions is criminal. My friend is very hard of hearing so we don’t ever try to watch Crunchyroll dubs together. I’m glad they say they’ll address that, moving forward. But please, god, don’t let them take the Netflix road where the dub version—which has a completely different script from the sub version—simply runs the original subtitles along with the dub track so the “closed captions” absolutely don’t match the spoken dialog. Which should also be illegal. Maybe you can get away with that for completely deaf watchers (but shame on you), but it just makes following the story even more difficult for the hearing impaired and those who need closed captions for other reasons. |
