is something I really hate.
No, I'm not talking about 'wingmen' who are like "Man, I can tell my friends are in love; I'll help them be alone together", no no, that's great. I'm talking about the drooly, panting, fujoshi characters who write porn/ or fantasize about their own freaking classmates. I find this really disgusting and disrespectful. This is why I didn't really like Kiss Him, Not Me during the non-otaku scenes. I didn't like it in Haganai with Rika and I didn't like it in Oregairu with Ebina either. It is a very tasteless trope. Yes, fujoshi exist, yes they ship characters, but all the fujoshi I know in fandom keep it to fandom. That is why I have no problem with them. But why do they have to cross this line in anime? I will immediately start hating the character. Your classmates/friends aren't TOYS. They have minds and lives of their own. Their sexuality is not yours to decide EITHER! Quite lewding them! Especially without their consent! It's always played for comedy...and I don't find this funny in the least bit. Good grief. ...okay, I just needed to rant a little. Does this trope bother anyone else here? I'm thinking "...surely it must?" I think it's similar to male characters disrespecting girls' privacy and trying to see them naked. (which isn't funny either!) I suppose it's not as bad if the fujoshi keeps her fantasy to herself but it's still offensive to me. It's STILL lewding the people around you...just in a different way. And it's nasty, all the same.

I actually don't mind it and I've found it quite funny on occasion. I can't think of a funny example from an anime right now, but in an anime styled video game, Trails of Cold Steel, there's a character who is a fujoshi and I generally found it funny whenever her mind went in the gutter. You'd often find her fantasizing about the various characters in that game and I thought it was funny.

Yeah this becomes Tama's main trait in Barakamon (more in the manga I suppose) and it's not really funny, ever. Whenever a new adult male character gets introduced she sees it only as a cog in the relationships she's imagining, too. The one other example that comes to mind is just manga, in The Life of the Witch Who Remains Single for About 300 Years!, and there's an entire character whose main purpose is to be this gag (as kind of a show of what will happen to the main character if she doesn't find a man, sort of?) and it's painfully unfunny there too

This gag is not anything new; it kinda-sorta appears in one of the earliest episodes of Naruto, for instance. And male characters in anime have been fantasizing about female classmates in sexual situations for decades. More recent fujoshi examples do seem to be making a bigger and more dedicated scene about it, but nothing that I would consider game-changing.
Really, it doesn't bother me. There's nothing strange about fantasizing about the people around you, and for teenagers that would mainly be classmates. Adults can train themselves not to do it in inappropriate contexts, but I wouldn't expect most real-life teenagers to be that mature. |

I know it's not "new"...but it's begun to irritate me recently as I notice it more and more.
There isn't? 
I really don't know anyone who does that. Celebrity fantasies maybe but not ordinary people you see and interact with every day. I mean, just imagine if a high school girl got caught drawing pornographic images of two of her male classmates together? Do you think that would be considered "normal" behavior? |

I guess that depends on whether that "normal" means "natural" or "what we are told is normal by the arbitrary social norms of our country/era".
I don't find the trope especially endearing but honestly, I've wondered about friends, acquaintances, even workmates, and I think it's a natural part of growing up and navigating your sexuality in a world which is simultaneously full of both sexualized imagery and slut-shaming culture. I don't draw porn of people I know, obviously, but that's just an example of anime turning everything up to comical extremes, as it does with most ordinary interactions until they become stale. If you have never privately evaluated the attractiveness of anyone around you or lewded them in your imagination, that's cool, but I'm willing to bet that I'm not the only person whose mind occasionally goes there. Where it becomes a problem is where it slips out and starts making the subjects (or other mutual acquaintances) uncomfortable, which is obviously unacceptable. Scenes of teen (and adult) boys fantasising about their crushes in sexy ways are commonplace and this more 'distant' fantasizing mostly replaces that trope when the genders are flipped, due to ingrained attitudes towards women actually owning their own sexuality and showing agency in relationships. It doesn't bother me if it's only in their internal thoughts or presented in a way where the 'victim' is comfortable with it. And while I agree that bullying awkward teenagers with weirdly sexy depictions of them in the arms of their classmates is not a great look, it's rare that the instigator is portrayed as socially skilled or heroic for doing so. From my experience it's usually shown as the equivalent of the sketchy male friend who lends the hero dubious porn, scares off girls and gives terrible relationship advice, not an aspirational archetype at all. |
