Would love to see a little stronger sales for ER. The game is so fire, definitely one of the best I have ever played, if not the best.

And Babylon's Fall is nowhere to be seen, which is not surprising.

This is just Japan and they barley use PC's.

Overall sales are in the multi millions. The game just hit all time high concurrent players on Steam alone at 1M (top 6 of all time). That usually only happens on day 1, not a week after. Also sold more than Fifa/COD etc in the UK.

remember that this is only the physical game sales - good chance that there were a ton more sales over there digitally than physically

From what I've heard Japanese gamers tend to favor physical media, so I don't think the digital sales are as big as the phyisical sales. But anyways, Elden Ring had the biggest opening for a PS5 game, though it didn't crack the 100k numbers (on PS5 alone, that is) it's still a respectable number. I don't know if a PS game can have a debut as high as some Nintendo titles like Pokémon, I can only imagine Dragon Quest XII doing those kind of numbers (that's if the game comes to the PS5, though I'm pretty sure it will)

From the numbers we've heard in the past, digital sales are usually about half as big as physical sales in Japan - a bit higher than that on Playstation, a bit lower on Switch. From that, it's likely Elden Ring did over 400K in its first week, which is quite a bit better than any other Souls game.

It's tearing up charts in the rest of the world too. I expect it'll hit at least 20 million copies sold worldwide, twice as much as the next best Souls game.

Good, I'm glad that this game is getting the mainstream attention it deserves and that people are buying a game that has a lot of real effort put into it instead of buying those same regurgitated annual crapfest games : that barely have any improvements at all, release in a nigh unplayable or buggy state and end up removing content that was present in past games.

For some context. Here's the week 1 sales for other FromSoftware Souls games:

Demon's Souls - 37K
Dark Souls - 229K
Dark Souls 2 - 263K
Bloodborne - 150K
Dark Souls 3 - 219K
Sekiro - 150K
Elden Ring - 279k

So Elden Ring is FromSoftware's top performer now. And while Japan may prefer physical copies more than the west, the digital share has likely grown over time. Which means it's likely an even better performance compared to its older titles.

That may have been true for like 10 years ago, but nowadays the PC craze has hit Japan too, see vtubers or any modern anime/manga/etc. where PC gaming culture is referenced, how something like Apex is insanely popular. Certainly consoles are still king but they're not the only players in town anymore. Nothing beats Switch or mobile games of course.

How much effort was put into this game is debatable considering the type of game this is. Also when you remember it’s a game made in the same vein as Demon Souls but with open world elements is it really that unique?

I'm 120 hours into the game and you have no idea what you're talking about. The sheer amount of substantial, hand crafted content is staggering. Every weapon is painstakingly modeled and textured. There are so many secrets, gameplay improvements, SOOO many new, incredible things. It is by far, the most beautiful, fully realized open world RPG I have ever played. I am constantly stumbling into new NPCs, weapons, armor, enemies, dungeons, etc. I am rewarded for my curiosity every time. I accidentally stumbled into a massive, sub-region of the game today. Full of bosses, terrain and mechanics I have seen nowhere else in the game. I have been in this optional area for 7 hours, fought two bosses, and still have a big chunk left.

The kicker? I have consistently stumbled into massive hidden areas like this since I started playing. It's nuts

Yes, it reuses game play mechanics, some animations, etc. But so what? The amount of time it must have taken to make this game is insane. Saying it's cheap because it's mechanically similar to other Souls games is silly. Don't fix what isn't broken. So they didn’t; they refined and made these systems better.

Have you even played the game? The open world experience itself is so well crafted that it gives even BotW a run for its money. I could spend 100 hours in this game without fighting a single boss and it would still be one of the greatest games I have ever played. It is a kind of game that makes me go "wow" every 5 mins.

And yet isn’t a common occurrence for gamers to complain about how similar games are to each other because of similar mechanics or aesthetics?

To be honest no, this game wasn’t on my radar and even hearing the positive feedback doesn’t make me the least bit interested.

Any game’s open world can give BOTW’s open world a run for it’s money considering how lackluster and empty it was. That being said I need more than having an open world in a game to be intrigued.
