This isn't exactly a fair comparison, as Aika & Eiken were OVAs, so they never had to deal with TV "standards & practices" in any way, unlike World End Harem. A better comparison would be to point out how back in the 80s it was perfectly fine for anime to show bare-chested women & even (on rarer occasion, usually for laughs) pants-less men. That being said, all the images I've seen for WEH's censorship are just so absurd that it might as well be a parody. |

Good point. I probably would have been better-served bringing up all the times Lum and Ranma had their bits pulled out into the open. I forget the title of the show (hence why I didn't mention it in the column), but there was an educational anime aired a while back that was similarly censored to heck and back to the point where it was unwatchable. |

Oh I like the idea of the guy getting bored with [expletive] everyone, you can nicely transition this into looking at sex-work and how it's a normal jobs- and it's just used to transition into incest...
Isn't there still one or two anime a season that are outright pornographic (iirc something about fireman and something about a monk aired not too long ago). |

On reflection, it was literally the chapter that introduced Doi that I dropped this comic on.

Futari Ecchi (Step Up Love Story)? I never watched it, so I don't know how censored it was. I'm not watching this either, but am enjoying the reviews. Hearing about and seeing the image of the two people/one swimsuit bit reminds me of this from Comical Psychosomatic Medicine where they examine the falling into boobs trope. Btw, the thumbnail for this article looks less like censoring and more like Doi is wearing nose-glasses. |

To be fair, nudity in the 80s was very simplistic. The ones that weren't Barbie doll anatomy drew nipples as just little pink dots with no real detail to them. Standards have changed to be sure, but it's also more marketing these days to sell BDs and uncensored streams. But I'd personally say the ecchi content is higher quality now than back then, even if you could show more on television. Even non-nude scenes like the Marin breast jiggle stuff from Sono Bisque Doll episode 2 puts 80s television anime boobies to shame in terms of it's highly artistic animation. |

I honestly don't understand the hate for this show (and the manga). For me it's just a fun fantasy story. It doesn't have to be deep or anything, although I enjoy "deep" stuff too. Maybe I'm just weird in what I like.

This show is bad in my opinion. The censorship is horrid, some logic is put the window and the MC is all, "Oh I don't want to save humanity until I have sex with my missing gf." Plus it's spot on the the UW having the Seele/Eva vibe. I was watching it and thought, "I feel like I've seen this before."
That being said it had the potential to be good but man oh man. The concept is great but the execution is something left to be desired. I'm going to keep on watching it just to laugh and make my mind argue its logic. |

I just hope the BDs reveal that all the censorship is actually covering something truly unspeakable. Like male nipples everywhere.

I am probably totally wrong in saying this, just because of what the show actually is, but besides Reito just wanting Erisa to be his first, perhaps his non-performance of his assigned duties is to force the government to seriously find his missing girlfriend.

Only the 2nd spinoff, WEH Fantasia (artwork by H-mangaka Savan) is still ongoing. Comments I've seen say Fantasia has the more interesting and better implemented combo of story and titillation. The 3rd spinoff, WEH Britannia Lumiere (artwork by Eto Kira) ended mid-last year, I suspect due to author's health issues and problems with writing all 3 series at once. https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/titles/100112 Lumiere was more of a josei/reverse-harem take, with much less sex and titillation. The story ended on a rather inconclusive "the true adventure begins now" note. |

Yup, the MK virus was made by incel lesbians to create a utopia without guys. They just didn't count on all the other women in the world not going full lesbo because they absolutely needing to be banged by said guys or they go insane (or something)...

It's pretty clear the reviewers never even looked at the mangas,
I agree the censoring is way overdone and annoying, and the anime as given is missing a lot of details, but much of that is explained in the mangas, where Reito has a lot more to do. The reason AI doesn't work isn't entirely explained, but it was tried and repeatedly failed, likely because the virus was engineered that way,. And the UW doesn't really want boys to be born because they want no males at all, which is why they made the virus in the first place. They've perfected female cloning. The end is coming with a bang. I'm glad I stuck it out. Oh, and Hiroki: it's not that all or most other women "need to be banged." Some actually want to have children, and some genuinely like the guy they meet. The harem partners are selected because of their genes and because they WANT to have children. Many other women aren't given a chance at being chosen, and others turn it down. Some of the chosen women agree because if they get pregnant, they and their families get special treatment. There's a huge shortage of food because most of the world's farmers and food processers were men, who are now...DEAD. Chosen women get extra rations etc. Big incentive in a world of starving women. |

Admittedly, the more lewd side of anime was never something I cared much for, so I was never going to check this out anyway, but the sheer level of censorship in this, even censoring people making out, is certainly something to see while reading this.
