Kind Sir! I may not have liked this show (finding the writing dishonest) but your cruel and demeaning attack against the target audience will not stand! Of course, one could argue that a show about an unrealistic and perfect female starting an unprompted relationship with heavy sexual undertones with a man devoid of character, friends and fixated on his hobbies could be targeted to creepy men, and it may also be that creepy men enjoy carefully animated fictional breasts, but aren't they people too? As much as our opinions differs, I feel the need to defend them. They may be the target audience for this show, but respect should be given! |

You can drop the obnoxious fake etiquette since it’s pretty clear he was not talking about the target audience there. Despite the number of creeps in this thread pretending otherwise, this show is not porn. Apparently the idea that girls can have hobbies or interests and that the actual point of the show is to care about that is too scary and has to be dismissed because god forbid anything exist for any other reason than to please dudes who see women as objects. |

Not to speak over, but I'm pretty sure the point was more of a venn diagram. I.e. Group A "utter creepy trash" Group B: "men who have never been in relationship with an actual female" Overlap Group C: "men who have never been in a relationship with an actual female and are utter creepy trash"
The target audience of the show isn't Overlap Group C, the poster is suggesting there are people in that group commenting here on the site. If the show was trying to target them, I don't think they'd be so upset about it to begin with. |

Bingo #1. (And I don't feel you were talking over, but thank you none the less)
Bingo #2.
And Bingo #3. If you're not making the shitty and/or creepy comments obviously the complaint was not directed at you. Nor did I ever say all fans of the show are "X" in any fashion. I have quite a few times said in other threads I am a fan of the manga myself, and I am currently watching the anime as well. So drop the fake act. Seriously, if you actually think many of the comments presented here, and on twitter on the twitter accounts of staff, are not a problem then I have little to say to you. If you think obnoxious men (most of which I seriously doubt have real experience with women in a relationship going by their ignorant comments) trying to explain to women here, and on twitter, how they should should feel and think in regards to wearing underwear and/or swimsuits, or what they should be concerned with in terms of public display or self image, is not an issue then I have even less to say to you.. Those sorts of people are NOT the target audience. |

All right. Fair. Just felt a little weird to me to give it near-equal emphasis. And honestly, I'm not sure how relevant it is to the creepiness and mansplanations in this thread at all -- God knows there are plenty of married men who are staggeringly ignorant of women's experiences and perspectives. |

One reason to have episode 2 dwell so much on Gojo's discomfort and the power dynamics clearly on Marin's side is to balance things out. Since later, when presumably the sewing starts, the dynamics are likely to flip around.
I only hope that at that stage, Marin is more than a cheerleader for the project. |

Ah, I found your attack quite ferocious and unwarranted (I do not read Twitter, so pardon me if I missed some context). Those people are clearly one of the audiences, and I'd even dare to suggest not a small one. RomComs are escapism, and the amount of "focus" on clips and screenshots of the female protagonist I've found around does not make me doubt that teh creeps are enjoying it. Quite a lot. Probably more than me. Criticizing the writing ain't a crime. Finding Dress-Up disingenuous - at least the two episodes that we have seen - ain't a crime either. You find this empowering character building: I find it stealthily.... insincere. Up to the next episodes to change my opinion. |

I got around to watching the first two episodes finally and I really enjoyed it so far. The main duo's interactions are cute and Marin is really hot so episode 2 was really nice and the animation quality and attention to detail was really surprising to see. It's always nice to see more gyaru characters get popular. Hope this doesn't get me called an incel or anything This is probably my favorite show of the season and I think it could be a genuine hit if it plays its cards right. I'm looking forward to seeing some of the characters and plots people have been hinting at show up. The cosplay aspects seem informative too so I might have to show this to my friend who is into cosplay.

My issue is for all My Dress-Up Darling has told us about Marin, she might as well be a cardboard cutout or inflatable doll. Compare that to how much more we already know about Hiyori and Koharu in Slow Loop, or how much more we knew after two episodes about Koguma and Reiko in Super Cub and Rin and Nadeshiko in Yuru CampΔ. All are shows presenting high school girls participating in a specific interest. I cared about the primary characters in the three other shows I mentioned after two episodes, but it has not yet been demonstrated why I should care about Marin and Gojou. |

There are fan-service that is only there as a eye candy to attract the target audience and there are fan-service that have a purpose. In this case the fan-service is plot relevant as you said. Marin as a model and as a cosplayer of erotic characters is very comfortable been with little clothes. If you want do to the kind of cosplay Marin does you have to be comfortable been around with little clothes and been watched and have lots of cosplay photographers taking pictures during events while showing lots of skin in some of the costumes. Sono Bisque Doll is very detailed to how cosplay works and how cosplayers do the kind of cosplay Marin does. The story shows how Marin is comfortable with it and how Gojou are overwhelmed with that at the beginning and how things change with time. People complaining about the fan-service and how Marin acts should try looking in google of cosplay in events in Japan. There are some events like Comiket where some of the cosplayers end up with more than 30 photographers around them taking pictures at the same time while in very reveling costumes (Summer Comiket and Anime Japan can be really crazy). Events in Japan even have rules to how much skin you can show because how extreme some cosplay can be. There are even special underwear you have to use while doing more extreme cosplay without breaking the rules. So there will be more fan-service of Marin in the future but that serves the purpose of the story. Probably the director will use this to put more focus on Marin beauty, after all this is a seinen young adult anime/manga. But if is done right like in this episodes, it will be a plus to this anime. But what is important is that this is a anime more about the hobby of cosplay, how cosplay is made and how it brings Marin and Gojou close and helps Gojou overcame his trauma. People that don't usually like fan-service can see a anime where fan-service is important in the story and can enjoy the anime. Fan-service is only there because is relevant in this story and is not there just to attract some audience. |

You know the tired cliche of the girl who falls for a boy because he's the first one to call her "cute"? Gojo, through his vocation as a doll-craftsman, is that girl, and Marin is the first person to call his craft, and his interest in it "cute". He's also a somewhat sheltered young man with real reluctance to engage with his peers because one of his only friends in childhood rejected him and his interest --- which Marin has whole-heartedly endorsed on several occasions in just these first two episodes.
She also said something in the first episode which struck him: you shouldn't reject people because of what they're interested in, and that their passion for something is itself something to treasure. I'm starting to think that using the term "fan service" is begging the question[1] --- assuming that scenes of revealing clothing is "service" for "fans" as opposed to just a part of the story. Later in the story he gets over this problem (which, I concede, did sort of drag), not only with Marin, but with other cosplayers. [1] I'm almost afraid to use this term because most people don't realize that it refers to a fallacy of making an argument based on a premise that assumes the truth of the conclusion, instead of supporting it. But I'm a pedant. |

I can see why you'd think that the series is going the harem route, but I don't. I think the opposite. If I'm not mistaken, Kitagawa is the only person that Gojo has called pretty and/or beautiful. And if you read far enough into the series, you'll see the significance of that. |

Discussion of parts of the manga not yet animated: spoiler[(I really liked the fact that the manga makes pretty clear that Kitagawa recognizes the significance of it, too.) What I've seen so far (what has been officially released in English), Gojo has eyes for only one person (that's the "something of" in "something of a harem", but there is at least one other person whose heart he sets aflutter, possibly two.] Sorry for all the redaction. I hope this doesn't become like another 86 thread, though now I have a better appreciation for what the 86 readers went through. |

Happy to say I enjoyed the third episode a lot more than the second. There was some sexy Marin-to-Gojo teasing, but it always seemed very well-integrated into building their rapport, and the episode was littered with charming banter and small, meaningful moments building their relationship (like her comment to Gojo on the bridge). There was a brief "indirect kiss" mini-gag that that didn't do much for me, but that feels like a cultural staple I'll never quite get in anime, and on the whole I thought it was just a very endearing 20 minutes.
