BoD meeting: So we have a PS5 supply problem. Instead of adapting our PS4 factories to make PS5s, which we were going to do anyway, lets make more PS4s to solve the PS5 shortage! *Thunderous applause*

Unless the specific chipset to make PS5's are in short supply but unnecessary to make a PS4 (which I believe is the case actually, but please correct me if I'm wrong), this doesn't really help with the main issue.

Converting the PS4 factories won't do jack squat when the main PS5 bottleneck is the supply of parts. Presumably the PS4 being older hardware means that either its parts are more readily available or Sony still has a decent stockpile to pull from to continue the manufacturing. |

That's not how that works. There are plenty of older surplus chips etc available that cannot magically be converted into PS5 parts. So someone may as well do something with them. There also remains demand for PS4s with the resell market seeing them going for higher than standard retail price in many places. Sony wants to retain a customer base in their ecosystem, so if they can't sell a PS5 to someone they'd would rather sell them a PS4 and hope they upgrade to PS5 later. It helps that they also have some significant new PS4 games releasing for these people to buy. Clearly they would have preferred selling backwards compatible PS5s, but they can't. These people can either be sold a PS4 or they will buy a Xbox Series S or a Switch. This move doesn't take resources away from PS5 production. PS5 production is at the mercy of supply lines in China and random government lockdown grinding things to a halt over any positive test result. No determined hardcore PS5 customers are lost, so this is to cater to the casual market that is just looking to buy whatever system is available to them. |
