That ending was dull. The entire anime would have been better of it focused on Fena and the female pirates. Watching Fena learn how to be independent and confident while going on crazy adventures with eye patch girl and her crew would have been far more entertaining and less convoluted and contrived.

The I made the correct decision in dropping this show after the first episode; the writing seemed stupid and super generic from get go.

This is another reason I expect Sony to mothball the Crunchyroll Originals line when they take control of CR’s day to day operations. In theory, the intentions were good, in execution it’s been one blunder after another.

Agree with all of this, though personally, I still think the Ni no Kuni movie's ending is a lot worse and way more mean-spirited.

I stopped watching when they killed off the only actual pirates in the show. Don't call someone a "pirate princess" and then don't make her a forking pirate, thanks.

The ending does come out of left field.
I'd have just accepted something like Fena just being a conditioned pawn used as a map by a defunct group of people who were amassing or hiding wealth and treasure as a means of steering humanity and freeing it from greed so that they could avoid the wrath of God that Noah survived. Kind of gets the same general idea, and is foreshadowed by all the shifty organizations already involved and the general-ness of piratry. Even Abel's obsession can be thematically tied in. Once Fena gets there, it's mission accomplished and the rest can write itself. Still had a good time with the show up to the finale. Could've been a fun franchise if they followed Pirates of the Caribbean's formula utilizing the great cast they had. |

Meh idk 1st ep was kinda rly the best and then it just became more meh the more episodes were out barely any of that pirate stuff, hated that whole haircutting thing at the start aswell such stupid thing and she went from beautiful/strong FMC to just an meh strong FMC and later on idk what i even watch tbh pretty much already forgot all about the show and barely a month passed think that says enough.
The only thing that rly carried this show was its amazing animation and made it bearable to stick around till the end else i bet many more would have already dropped it.... |

For what it's worth, I liked the anime for the first nine episodes. Then episode 10 dragged, episode 11 dragged further, and episode 12 just shat the bed it already tore the sheets and mattress cover off in the preceding two. Live-commenting on the finale on my home message board helped keep my emotions in check, sure, but that did nothing to change the fact that this ending stunk, and that as far as my opinion on Williams Street's anime track record goes, this is worse than even FLCL Progressive.
You know, back when the summer season was wrapping up, I thought Nick was being more than a little hard on Fena when he called it the worst show of the season. But now that I've finished it, I imagine the two of us couldn't agree with each other more. |

I liked the show for the most part, the mystical mysterious genre is one I like. The characters were appealing and likeable, the art was pretty good-especially the backgrounds. The ending tried to do too much with not enough time, it was like "is that all there is?" I'd have to rate it 5.75 out a possible 10.

Isn’t that basically Bodacious Space Pirates? |

But the entire story was written by Kazuto Nakazawa, and CR has nothing to do with that outside of just funding the show. |

Now I just want to know what word(s) those first two posters wrote that was so unacceptable a mod had to replace it with "dull." Hopefully I won't use it by mistake?
Anyway, on-topic, I was very much expecting a bad finale by the time we got there, but didn't expect a trainwreck of quite this magnitude. A literal deus ex machina where the main character has no actual role because technically she's making an earth-shattering decision but there's only one valid option, and not even a third choice concocted from her experiences leading to this point as you'd usually see with this type of ending. Heck, we can only infer what she chose; they didn't show us, as if we also got mind-wiped. The reason I had little hope for a good ending, though, was because the first 11 episodes increasingly felt like a coming-of-age-slash-female-empowerment story, only backwards. Fena is at her most fearless and independent in the beginning, and this gradually deteriorates over the show's run, to the point where she's obeying the mysterious voice in her head most of the time. They could, of course, have found some way to invert the process in the end, make her rebel against this destiny nonsense, as you'd expect the Fena from episode 1 to do. But... nope. For all the bizarre mystical randomness in the finale, the biggest disappointment was that it didn't actually have any surprises for us. |

Okay I really need to know about the "dull" thing too now lol. I can't think of any offensive synonyms for "boring"!!!

Probably the one that begins with R and is sometimes substituted with "exceptional". Personally, I'd have replaced it with "dumb". "Dull" just makes it sound like the writing was boring as opposed to pants-on-head stupid. |
