Recently on this site,I've been reading about some old anime getting English dubs when they previously didn't have any. Stuff like "Gunbuster,""Millennium Actress,""Memories,"and a few others like them. While there are those who might not like that sort of thing,I'm not one of them. I think it's good that these anime are finally getting a dub because it means that they'll get a wider audience that'll appreciate them as much as the sub only people do.
One of the most surprising shows to get this treatment is the 1978 series "Future Boy Conan." While it's good that this anime finally came here, one wonders what it would have been like if it came here at the time or a couple of years later. It would be interesting to imagine what it would have been like if it had. You'd probably have the likes of Peter Fernandez or Corinne Orr doing their thing. What job they would have done is perhaps something that will probably only exist in the imagination.

But,this leaves a tantalizing question. Which anime will be next? Which one will attempt to raise money on Kickstarter or somewhere else like that to get an English dub or surprise us here on ANN? Many of us have a show that's worthy of getting one that never got it previously. For me,I have plenty of shows that I think should have an English dub but I'll give some examples of the sort of shows that I hope will eventually leave the purgatory of sub-only and come to the heaven of an English dub and wider accessibility.

1."The Rose of Versailles:"This one should be pretty obvious. "The Rose of Versailles" is a show about a young woman who's the captain of the guards in 18th Century France. While I hear the show can be kinda heavy,it would be interesting to have the show done in English. Whether it would succeed is unclear, but I think it should be given a chance regardless. Who knows? It might gain some more fans here. There's already a French dub of the show out there, why shouldn't there be an English one?

2."Turn A Gundam:"Another obvious choice for an English dub is "Turn A Gundam." One main reason for it is it's set in North America. While I have heard it's a bit esoteric at times,it would be one of those shows that would be great if given a dub. They may have to simplify it a bit but it seems like it would be a great show if an English dub was ever made. Like a lot of people,I don't know if it'll happen. I hope it does one day. I'd like to see it.

Well, those are my choices for shows that should get a dub. What are yours? Which old anime would any of you like see get one? Please tell me. I'd love to know and I'd hope you tell me. There are any number of old anime that might get an English dub. Which one is next? All we can do is wait and see.

Well,Nate148. You never know. Someone may look at something like "Rose of Versailles" or "Turn A Gundam" and may decide to give them a dub. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that "Gunbuster" was going to get a dub and I thought it was never going to get one. I've heard a lot of good things about that show but it was never given a dub. I'm happy that "Gunbuster's" going to be given a chance to shine with an English dub. It's long deserved it and I hope it's successful.
Even more surprising that a 1978 show called "Future Boy Conan's" going to be given a dub. It didn't come here when it first came out. I don't know why it's being given a dub now but hey, like the old saying goes "Never look a gift horse in the mouth." I hope it works out,Nate148. I really hope it does.

Aren’t Riyoko Ikeda’s works noted for awkward licensing conditions on top of that?

It's presumably getting a dub solely because it was directed by Miyazaki, and it was assumed (rightly so) that anything with Miyazaki's name on it would receive enough buzz to justify the expense of a dub. The other two titles you mentioned are a much harder sell. While Rose of Versailles is a bona fide all-time classic, it's also a very old-looking series with more of a niche fanbase, not to mention what's no doubt a complicated licensing situation. It'd almost certainly have to require a Kickstarter. In the case of Gundam, there's not exactly a big market for older non-UC series, and Sunrise has never invested in a dub for any classic titles that weren't already dubbed by Bandai many years ago. Hell, that even extends to UC titles, as ZZ didn't receive a dub either.

To be honest,Top Gun,I had no idea that Miyazaki had anything to do with this production at all. Just the fact that an anime series from 1978 is getting an English dub in 2021 is surprising to me,to say the least. It wouldn't matter if Hayao Miyazaki played even a minor role in this, just the fact that something like "Future Boy Conan" is coming over here and getting an English dub is going to be something that would get me or other people's attention.
As for Dayraven's comment that the creator Riyoko Ikeda's works are noted for awkward licensing conditions. Well,I wouldn't know about that. I'm not really an expert on it. But,there's a statement both of you made which interests me. You two say that it's unlikely that anime like "Rose of Versailles,""ZZ,"or "Turn A Gundam" would ever get an English dub. That may be true, but it was also unlikely that shows like "Memories" or "Millennium Actress" would ever get dubs, until they somehow got them.

Yeah, the thorny legal issues and older style might be a hurdle for anime like this, but I'd like to think that someone would take a look at these shows and think they would do well dubbed. It might open these shows up to much wider interest if that happened. Even if it requires a Kickstarter campaign,I might give them my dollar. So,I'm not willing to throw in the towel for these shows. If a show like "Gunbuster" is going to get a long overdue dub, then why can't these shows be given a chance? Perhaps one day, they will be.

Again, it's all about name recognition. Memories has the legendary creator of Akira, Katsuhiro Otomo, right on the label, and likewise Millennium Actress was directed by the renowned Satoshi Kon (who also worked on one of the segments of Memories, coincidentally). Both of them are known quantities that are guaranteed to sell. Also, it's orders of magnitude easier and cheaper to dub a single movie/OVA than a lengthy series, so distributors are going to need a guaranteed return on their investment in order to dub something older.

Well,Top Gun. I might agree that shows like "Rose of Versailles" and "Turn A Gundam" could be riskier propositions to dub than something like "Memories." But,who's to say that one day, someone would give these shows a chance. Even if it's done by Kickstarter,I hope it gets done. People might be surprised and might gain a wider audience than it has if it stays were they're at now. Other shows have done it before. Hopefully,it can be done again.

Well, Snowmaster1 here is your chance to participate. Nozomi (Right Stuf!) has just announced a Kickstarter to dub the Dirty Pair TV Series.

Which was exactly the case with the Aria series. I'd say to a lesser extent the Emma series as well, but definitely with Aria. I mean they dubbed all 3 seasons and the specials. Not a cheap feat to do while hoping it would sell well once released. I think the success of that particular Kickstarter also showed this was a viable format for getting older shows a dub that did not previously have one, without relying on a big name title, director, or animator for brand recognition.

Wow,Alan45. I didn't know about that! Where did you hear about it? I'd do that as soon as I could if I knew where you got it from. I'd happily do that. I didn't see anything about it on ANN. So,where did you hear this from? I also agree with Redbeard 101. This might be a viable means of getting older shows a dub that they might not get otherwise. It might also give them a chance at greater exposure than if they stayed sub only. Thanks for telling me this, you guys. I'm happy you two told that. It means a lot. Thanks again. Smile

I would if I could,Alan45. Unfortunately,I have a problem. While I was able to donate to Kickstarter previously,I'm having problems doing it now. Unlike the previous times in which I donated, this time,I'm being asked to make an account with them I don't really need or want. I wish it was optional, but it isn't. You have to do it. I don't know why this is necessary. I need some help and I hope you or someone else can help me. I want to donate to this. I want to help make this happen. I wish I were able to do so.
