It never cease to amaze me just how many series have been getting more seasons and the like these last few years, back in the 00s to mid 2010's you would be lucky if any adaptation had gotten more than one season worth of material.

IKR. I am always amazed that season threes are getting a lot more common than it used to be, and that is excluding fake season twos / split cours.

It's almost like the industry realized that some people prefer watching anime to reading manga, and that if they make an honest effort to keep adapting the source material, people will keep watching and will probably buy even more of the manga and merch. What a concept!

I think there was always a divide between anime being an means to an end or anime being an end itself. Does the anime has a multiplier affect? If it barely breaks even and does not lead to significant increase in revenue for the source material (whatever it may be), then future seasons will unlikely to happen. If it does result in more revenue for the source material, then future seasons would be a 50/50. If it results in revenue for the source material and brought in revenue on its own, the likelihood of future seasons would be significantly higher.

I was expecting maybe a third season, but that and a movie? Wow.
I'm really curious to see who licenses this. Funimation has Sony money now, but will Netflix want the rest of Takagi-san?

I think it's down to the fact so much money is now in made in overseas streaming. Back then TV anime was made for the most part to promote a product such as a manga, a novel, etc. Mostly one off adverts. These days overseas have a hand in saying what they want, and if something did well for them there's going to be a demand for a continuation. We still a lot of the former, but there's an influence of the latter creeping in.

Yeah, this is something that's frustrated me about the industry for a long time, that it's seemed locked into this mode where anime were only viewed as a commercial for some other product, be it the original manga or physical merchandise (including its own disks), as opposed to seeking for it to be profitable in its own right. It's such an alien business model when compared to the American TV model of shows being profitable based on ad buys during their broadcasts, or streaming shows based on their viewership numbers creating value for the subscription service. I wish there was a way for more series to operate under that model, since I think we'd see far more complete adaptations than we do now.

I watched a presentation long ago, but it suggested that robot anime dominated the market at one time because the toys (robots) were extremely lucrative. Magic girls followed similar path early on (60s-70s-80s) with products targeting girls: cosmetics/fashion related.
Anime was essentially a by-product of these toy manufactures.
Apparently Gundam was very different because it actually discussed interesting philosophical topics with depth, asked tough questions etc. It had a proper story with proper characters (not that it hasn't been done before, but it was a monumental point). You could enjoy the anime without being part of the toy-buying empire. The anime stood on its own.
So, from a historical standpoint, perhaps we could view anime being a vessel, a vehicle for something else was the "norm" because that was how money was made.

Forget Takagi season 3, Uzaki season 2 or even Nagatoro season 2...I wanna see an Anjou-san season 1!
