I don't think the Olympics have nearly as much to do with the increase in cases as people's behavior does. Nobody is taking it seriously anymore. Trains are nearly as packed as they were pre-COVID, people aren't bothering with masks, and bars are constantly full. Nobody cares. Combine that with the excruciatingly slow vaccine rollout, and - tada~! - record-breaking levels of infection.

Unless restrictions get tighter it's just going to get worse.

You're probably right, and this would likely be the case if the Olympics were held elsewhere, but it's not a good look for Japan, especially since most Japanese thought they should've been cancelled.
These Olympics have made me more anxious than any have before, despite the precautions in place, since I know someone participating this time. I just hope they get through it all okay.

The Olympics should have been cancelled.
But they aren't behind this current surge of infections. The surge is attributed mostly to the Delta variant, and Japan's failure to enact any real restrictions during the "state of emergency." Restaurants, bars and movie theaters are all open; people are going to the office and the trains are crowded.

Say goodbye to Comiket 99. Comiket a whole will probably be cancelled indefinitely until the pandemic is contained, which at this rate I project will be 2031.

plus the funny thing is that many people don't actually realize that Japan in itself doesn't have the power to cancel it. as many think so. its actually controlled by a board of sub committees, and they aint gonna cancel it, no matter what. they would rather see the city burn than lose all their money
the best part? people, like you and me will blame and get angry at (in this case Japan)whoever is running it, and they can get away scot free lol. hell they have probably joined in on the Lynch mobs themselves whole giggling at the fact they hold all the cards, and making money while doing it.

Obviously the Olympics is not the cause of the increase, but the fact that it's going ahead despite everything definitely doesn't help with people's behavior. Whether it's "see, it's nothing to worry about, even the Olympics is going ahead!" or "whatever, we're done for anyway, the gov't prioritizes the Olympics over its own citizens, so we should just go and live our lives normally" it's just not something that helps.
A friend of mine, mom of two, with a teacher husband, just wrote that she and her husband not only haven't gotten their jab yet, she was told they may not get it sooner than winter, or even next year; meanwhile her kids are expected to go to preschool, her husband is expected to teach in classrooms. Meanwhile, the Olympics is everywhere and is being touted as a success and all that. She'd been doing her best all this time to be cautious, but this just kind of broke her.

I'm curious why the vaccine rollout has been slow in Japan (strong and healthy immune systems can only help so much). I feel fortunate that I've had two doses now and it should take full effect by this Sunday as that will be two weeks since I had the second dose.
Here's hoping that this improve for Japan's Covid situation as the year continues. I'm going to visit again next Spring but we'll be mindful of how things develop over time.

"people aren't bothering with masks", "Nobody cares" Wow that does not sound like Japan at all, wonder what happened to their mindset. My trip to Japan right before covid took off, seen too many cautious people social distancing and wearing mask at all times.
What went wrong I wonder...

It's really that simple which is bureaucracy and trying to protect Japanese companies. They were holding out for the longest time. Shots weren't happening for frontline workers til April. Honestly they're moving fairly fast at this point though. Australia is at like 15% dunno when the shot first rolled out there but assume it was before Japan. and since April Japan has already hit 27%+. I checked a couple days ago and it was at around 25% so in the last couple days another 2% were added. To go a bit further in depth though about the uneven roll out is each city/ward/prefecture has their own criteria I kid you not. One ward might be offering shots to under 65 atm where as another is still only offering it to 65 and over. I live outside of the 23 wards and in the sticks, I had gotten my paper work with a follow up notice shortly after for my city about being able to get the shot. I ignored it and shredded it cause I had already set up getting a shot through a sister school that my university is partnered with. Reason i shredded it is because there have been cases of people stealing the tickets from others and I'm not gonna entertain that in the least bit.

I will probably be able to go to Japan at some point the in the future. I have to believe in that but it is tough when not is my country's numbers going up but Japan's numbers going up as well. Unfortunately, it is something I really have no control over. So I can do is hope and pray that some day soon we can put this who pandemic behind us.

Yea, the Olympics at this point is simply like throwing gas on a fire that was already raging. Sure it's making it worse, but it wasn't the cause of the fire to begin with. That being said they ARE making it worse and not helping and it was stupid to have them. Anywhere. But especially in Japan given the other factors.

Is it wrong that every time I see that thumbnail for an article my first thought is: I can't wait to see the inevitable Hideaki Anno movie that's a metaphor for this time in history.

Our government do not have ability to enforce any restrictions Our constitution prohibits government from doing anything beside request. Until our companies decide to let people work from home nothing changes. Everyone is considered essential so must come to work, sit in close rooms and let bosses watch us work. Trains still packed full, and no one closes businesses, bars, or anywhere else. Instead our stupid LDP just blames young people for spreading virus.
Slow vaccination rollout! It is so slow that doses are going back, and we send millions of doses to Taiwan, because it was no Japanese made..
