My favorite would be Yukino Miyazawa from Kare Kano. An only slightly vulnerable, very eccentric, ass-kicker. She has her doubts and weaknesses but is so unrelenting in her pursuit of what she wants, she just has to figure out if what she wants is what she should want.

I even love the way she handled the controversial aspect of the final act. She made no apologies for her situation and wouldn't take them from Arima, and made clear something that some readers missed- It wasn't her idea and not how she would have done things but, when the self-loathing boyfriend was about to doom himself to further misery, she made the point to tell him clearly that she didn't actually object. I personally think that, no matter how powerful Arima was- she could have had twisted off his balls and left him weeping- if she really wanted to go to that extent.

And damn what people think. She's spoiler[having kids young,] AND going to medical school.

I’m so glad we share a love for magical girls! I adore Sakura, and I still oughta watch Princess Tutu, though I don’t know where I can see it right now, and I haven’t found a sub (which I personally prefer to dubs).

Magical girls rule Cool
Tutu's dub is very good! The show should be available on Funimation's site...if not, the blu-ray is definitely still in print; I bought it pretty recently (in the last three years I think)

You won't regret buying it, I promise. It is a masterpiece of work. And the price for 26 episodes and some great bonus features (the outtakes omg!!) isn't too bad.

@all-tsun-and-no-dere

Don't worry; I won't chew you out for liking a character I do not (I'd be a crappy anime fan if I did that lol) I just wish she developed a little more. I liked the show a lot many years ago...but it hasn't aged well for me. I attribute this more to Watase herself...but she has learned a lot! The Genbu Kaiden series is a vast improvement.

I haven't finished Lovely Complex yet but Risa seems pretty cool.

@Spastic Minnow Yukino is a great heroine, agreed. Smile

Although Shadows House is *not* shoujo at all, I feel like Emilico is "a shoujo heroine trapped in a seinen series" because she exhibits all those traits that we love; bubbly, naive, optimistic, doesn't give up, most of all, a sweet girl. She's also very brave and daring! You could stick her right in a PreCure cast, no problem...with her bouncy blonde twin tails and innocent blue eyes, she even looks like one! xD

On that topic, I also now must add all the girls from Tropical-Rouge! Pretty Cure and Kira Kira Pretty Cure A La Mode to my list of faves.

I have been enjoying Troipical Rouge, What counts as a protagonist for it? Do you include all the girls, or pick out one. Manatsu would probably be an obvious main character, but Laura has almost arguably received as much or more focus. Manatsu is a very fun character as one who always says whats on her mind. Laura acts as a great foil as much more self boastful with her own goals, and yet not actually malicious and does care. And then my running favourite has been Minori, the nerdy introvert that despite the connected cliché is very empathetic.

The traits worked especially well in the recent detective episode.

I would indeed count all the Cures as protagonists, not just for Tropical-Rouge but for the other Pretty Cure series too.

I adore all the MCs in Tropical-Rouge but my favorite has to be Sango/Cure Coral. She inspires me to be my authentic self. Also, not a protagonist but mascot character Kururun is too adorable!
