Easily my Top Hyped Anime of the Season. I love these little peeks inside some more traditional part of japanese culture whether it be rakugo or playing shamisen. Setsu could be a wee bit more likeable character but at least there aren't any total jerks yet. Also...that second episode's performance with Umeko is easily one of the best musical anime scenes in any anime ever.

So far I’ve watched
Moriarty
Mars Red
Joran
Those Snow White Notes
And this one is the one that has got me by the balls and makes me want to know what happens next
I’m loving the setup so far.
Mars Red ongnrotbrr hand is like it’s interesting as. a Taisho era vampire anime and for that reason alone I watch but nowhere near as mesmerizing as this

As a Kono Oto Tomare fan, this was one of my most anticipated shows this season—and it’s even better than I had hoped. Yeah, man, that duet with Setsu’s mother was phenomenal, but it was Seiryu Kamiki’s performance that brought tears to my eyes. I’m loving this one so much. Can’t believe I have to wait a whole week for the next episode.

Shamisen sounds a lot like a banjo to me, but more spare (3 strings instead of 4 or 5), and of course used for very different musical genres. So the "dueling shamisen" piece was a real treat.
I love the animation in this, and that not only are they not skimping on the performances, but that they're so well animated, and so creatively done. Even just the way they animate someone blinking seems to be done with care rather than by rote. And the art style is so my jam. Delighted this made it through!

Kono Oto had a cd released with the pieces used throughout the show so I hope this series does the same =)

Another breathtaking episode, which brought tears to my eyes. First off, I love the portrait of the grandfather in the OP (~30 sec in). I could look at that face for hours (ok, minutes, but you know what I mean).
During the first version of "Shungyou," the aerial shot of him walking along the beach with the waves coming in was awesome, but the simple animation of the wind blowing the weathered boards on the roof of a shack gave me chills at how evocative it was.
The second version was interesting in how they cut from Setsu's playing during her flashback to orchestral music, instead of still hearing Setsu, or even how the unperfected version would have sounded on his raggedy shamisen back then. That sound still only lives on in her memory.
I didn't think getting to this point felt abrupt, or at least not inappropriately so. Epiphanies do tend to be sudden after all - it's a feature, not a bug. I'm sure it's not the last time we'll be hearing "Shungyou," though probably the last time we'll hear that version of it. I'm looking forward to hearing its evolution as Setsu works through his issues.
I also really like the piano music that seems to follow Rai around. It demonstrates his observation that like his Tamapiyo chick, "The simpler they are, the more expressions you see in them." That seems to be a guiding principle of the series as well, letting the viewer imprint a lot onto the story. I'm not sure where Rai gets off saying Setsu has a pinched face though.
Personally, I'm not champing at the bit for more development for the side characters. For me, that's been rationed out in carefully measured doses so that I neither tire of them nor feel annoyed that they're hogging the spotlight from what I'm presently most interested in. I'm sure they'll get their due in due time.

I think I have to agree with this. I haven't yet felt cheated of knowing more about everyone else, and not felt like there was too much time on what was presented. I am sure we WILL get more of everyone else, and very soon probably, but I haven't felt any detriment from a lack of exploring those other side characters yet. I am so in it for the music, I would be happy if there continued to be one or two pieces every episode, they do a great job narrating them and putting visuals to them that I am always smiling though this show.
Since it seems all the group will be joining the Shamisen Appreciation Club, I am certain we will hear more about them, and the series did such a great job with the first episode fleshing out the girl he stayed with and her boyfriend, I'm sure these newer relationships will be handled skillfully as well. I wonder what the "plan" is Umeko has prepared. I wish I could watch more now, it's sad to wait...
I. Love. This. Show. I think I have to call this my favorite show to wait for every week.

Another great piece this week. I agree about the pacing though, the rest of the club seemed to be a bit too skilled by the end of the episode already.

Thanks for mentioning the new opening, I usually skip them to avoid spoilers, so I would have missed this change when I watch it later on

Episode 7 didn't just take its foot off the gas, it just stopped and rolled backwards. What would we need some relief for? It's not like it's been gripping and intense every episode. There was very little to move the story forward and the "humor" was just silly and pointless. This show is my Disappointment of the Season. It has never lived up to the potential of the first episode or even the first two episodes. Manga readers have said that after this arc, the show actually does return to being more "adult" oriented (aka, not HS club) but I don't see that happening in this cour and who knows if there will even be another season? I've been hanging on for the shamisen but I expect many have dropped the show because that isn't enough to keep them engaged and I can't disagree with that.

I wonder how quickly they'll move through this group competition since the clear focal point is seeing how the solo competition goes.
There's no way this new group of mostly amateurs is going to win (though an honorable mention or something would be nice to see), so there's not much tension there.

The pacing definitely felt off to me too. I was a bit annoyed that it felt like this extra drama was crammed in and pushed our protagonists performance to the next episode. I suppose they might have thought 3 performances would be too much for one episode, but I would have preferred ending the episode with it.
Mai is awesome. I hope we see more from her. She better be playing in the individual portion!

Quote: | Speaking of, her quirky genius brother doesn't seem too fond of her particular style, saying his “ears hurt” while listening to it, and frankly he can go jump in a lake. |
I don't think Soichi was saying that the performance was bad per say, but I think he didn't like how the cohesion was put off balance if you will. Mai is a very skilled performer, and she knows it for sure, which is why her sound particularly stands out in the crowd. In a solo performance, it's great. For a group performance, not so much, and it shows within her group's performance. It's basically the same problem with Arakawa's group, but simply more pronounced - there's just that one person that can easily solo without thinking of the dynamics of the group. In a way, it parallels with Setsu's development throughout the series; he understands that he's far above his group's level, so he tries to match them in order to fit in with their current sound. Mai doesn't do that during the latter half of the piece, making it about her rather than the group, so Soichi doesn't like it - no matter how impressive the piece is to the untrained public.
As a person who's been in quite a few ensembles, it's easier said than done to try and blend your sound with the others around you, and that's something that I personally really really enjoy about Those Snow White Notes. It doesn't try to make it easy, which is probably why I don't mind the drama that comes around lol. After all, they're high schoolers; drama is practically a necessity for high school anime.

At least this episode had more shamisen in it. I wouldn't still be hanging around for this show otherwise.

I really miss the first OP. The new one makes me feel like I'm watching Haikyuu!!, which isn't a terrible thing, but it doesn't hype me for this show.
I am a bit hyped to see what Setsu's got up his sleeve for their performance. Since he doesn't seem to be letting the other three in on it, I'm wondering how it's going to fly.
