I'm intrigued! With the very few contributions I've made, I always felt a little special in making them. This sounds like it could be fun.

OK everyone...let's get to work Smile

Fascinating. I am not privy to the inner workings of the encyclopedia, and so am unable to ascertain the specific ramifications that this new policy directive will have. That was a mouthfull.

Still, it does sound great. We use juries to decide whether or not a person is guilty, so why not use a similar system to confirm the validity of the information.

I am curious though. Juries can convict the innocent, so how will you verify that the outcomes of the audits are up to standard? Allow me to expand on that. Just like there are checks and balances for the justice system, will the Encyclopedia staff be checking on the results? Will they have some kind of veto should the audit gets it wrong?

And where do I sign up? I know little about most series, but I am willing, and have the same search capabilities as the next person (read: Google).

Oh, and by the way, I applaud genre search. Now I can specifically target Mecha shows so much easier. So thank you.

For starers many thanks to you Dan. You probably are one of the most unsung heroes here at ANN so thanks a million. And big thanks to the rest of the hard work from the encyclopedia staff. I'm personally glad to be able to do genre searches. I've always had to rely on anime magazines and reviews to get most of my heads up knowledge on new shows. Now I can do a genre search for what I want find titles in Japan before they come here and get a jump on them. I also am happy to do plenty of these audits to help out here.

Interesting. I had no idea so much went into the Encylopedia.

I'm more than happy to participate in the audit system. I've already done a few! It passes the time.

The audit system is a very interesting one indeed. I just got done with around 80 of them myself. It's nice because it gives assignments for series that you've already watched or at least to an extent of the series.

Just informing that I tried to audit twice (discard Mecha theme from Gankutsuou and Castle in the Sky) but I got the following message:

"We're terribly sorry but there has been an error while generating this page.
A notification has been automatically sent to the webmaster and he'll look into the matter as soon as possible.

Thank you for your understanding."

This is actually very interesting. I've done a few of these audits and the first couple of ones were pretty simple, hardly had to think about them at all, but then I got a few more and I started having to really go back and think about the series. And not only the ones I haven't seen (or read, for manga) in years, there was one question for Bleach that really had me scratching my head. I had to really think about what I would classify it out of the choices or if either of them matched at all.

I'm gonna keep trying to do at least a few each week, hopefully helping out at least slightly, and also because it seems like it might help me better understand the anime I watch and manga I read by having to take a deeper look at how I would categorize them.

Ok, it took me a few minutes to figure out how to add titles to my anime but I'm on board.

You might want to make the friggin links to add titles a little bigger or more obvious somehow.

I've done a few, and it works fine for me. It seems to be a brilliant idea, as it takes advantage of the collective wisdom of ANN patrons without the potential insanity that a wiki can generate.

The Encyclopedia really helps my viewing experience (what with my propensity for finding out directors, voice actors, and other staff members leading to a low-level Wikipedia effect time-sink for me from time to time), and I'd be more than willing to help out. Plus, at the very least, it's a brand-new way of killing time (by the looks of it, LOTS of time: I approve, lol). Still, I just noticed that it's dependent on the status of your personal My Anime list (giving me a reason to clean up and update mine, which I haven't done in months).

EDIT: Hey, I didn't notice until now, but it looks like you can edit your audits. Sweet!

Staff can override results if necessary, but doing that extensively would kinda defeat the whole purpose of peer-driven audits. And since genres & themes are subjective, then IMHO majority is right by definition. I'll try to put in place some checks and balances eventually, but I'm more likely to rely on automated checks and statistical methods that look for anomalous data in the audit votes. The point I want to make is: how do you decide if the audit got it wrong? Who decides? Me? If 12 people agreed that Cowboy Bebop is action instead of adventure, then who am I to disagree?

uh, since you're posting this in the forum that means you're already signed up, no? So you just need to head over to the audit page

Like I need something else to addict me. I assume I'm correct in going by the definitions set out by Dan42 in the past. I've got that page open and the edits so I can reread the definition when it comes to making decisions on certain differentiations. It might be a good idea to post up the definitions somewhere else as well (outside of the forum) if they haven't been already (and if they have, where are they?)

This is a great addition to the encyclopedia - thanks.

Is it expected to get the same assignment twice?
'Theme "Police" for anime Death Note (TV)' came up twice for me.

Yeah, a link on the assignments page or even a pop-up when you hover over the genre in question would help.

Never really thought about action and adventure being mutually exclusive until reading the link Mylene provided.

I suppose I won't be popular submitting this post. Never mind.

The following list was generated by the search tool using the genre selection 'romance' sorted by 'Ratings'.

9.04 romance Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal (OAV) 1999
8.82 romance Tsubasa Tokyo Revelations (OAV)
8.80 romance Nodame Cantabile (TV) 2007-01-11 to 2007-06-28
8.77 romance Kanon (TV 2/2006) 2006-08-25
8.74 romance Legend of the Galactic Heroes (OAV) 1988-12 to 1989-06
8.72 romance Honey and Clover II (TV) 2006-06-29 to 2006-09-21
8.70 romance ef - a tale of memories (TV) 2007-08-24
8.65 romance Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (TV) 2004-10-05 to 2005-03-29
8.63 romance Ouran High School Host Club (TV) 2006-04-04 to 2006-09-26
8.62 romance Honey and Clover (TV) 2005-04-14
8.59 romance Clannad (TV) 2007-10-04
8.57 romance Great Teacher Onizuka (TV) 1999-06-30 to 2000-09-24
8.48 romance Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid (TV) 2005-07-13 to 2005-10-19
8.46 romance Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (TV) 2003-08-25 to 2003-11-18
8.45 romance Romeo no Aoi Sora (TV) 1995-01-15 to 1995-12-17
8.45 romance Welcome to the NHK (TV) 2006-07-09 to 2006-12-17
8.45 romance Touch (TV) 1985-03-24 to 1987-03-22
8.43 romance Elfen Lied (TV) 2004-07-25 to 2004-10-17
8.40 romance NANA (TV) 2006-04-05 to 2007-03-28

Do you see my point? shonen, shojo are such a basic and helpful distinction. Besides I missed space adventure a lot from the themes section.
