I'm getting the feeling that this sort of thing with Sentai would lead to a new wave of dueling dubs with the likes of Animax, Streamline and AnimeUK before them.

It's been joked about before but we're getting closer to a scenario where we'll have three different dubs of AICO.

I have to ask: are they all Funimation voice actors?
Or are they mostly competing types. Just wondering here. |

Aw man, I was hoping for the redub to have British Accents like Black Butler or Hellsing. The setting is so obviously based off London anyway.

... huh?
I know I watched this on Netflix years ago and I swear it was in english(dub)? I went back to double-check and yeah the Netflix one is dubbed in English and the VA is a dude named 'Greg Chun' So like was Netflix's dub really bad or something? did they just not like it or is this normal cause this is the first time I've heard of an anime getting a new (eng)dub cast unless there were unique circumstances I didn't know. |

I'm really surprised to see Chris Patton here, he moved to LA about 4 years ago. |

Regardless of the intricacies surrounding Bang Zoom's dub, making another one seems a little excessive and pointless.

Netflix requires anyone who releases its dubs to pay for half their production costs. All Netflix dubs are union now and expensive. Hence it’s cheaper for Sentai to produce an entirely new dub instead of pay the fee.

Yeah, which is strange considering this dub was released before the SAG-AFTRA agreement in 2019. |

that would explain that whole situation with season 2 of saiki K between netflix and funimation, where funimation was gonna dub it, but pulled from doing it at the last minute, and netflix to dub it themselves with different actors from season 1 later on..

I’m surprised Sentai chose to license it for home video release. Who was clamoring for this and why spend extra money to dub it? I didn’t think it was that popular.

Yeah, this issue with Netflix has been going on for a while now, not just with Hero Mask & Baki here, but it has even affected European releases of stuff like Evangelion in Italy, the Violet Evergarden movie in France, the Seven Deadly Sins movie in Germany and Kakegurui in the UK.

I think in the case with Sentai, it's a matter of having enough money to afford the dubs, which may have gotten expensive due to the SAG-AFTRA deal. And it seems the one about Seven Deadly Sins is a one time case given it mentions just one which means other IPs were purchased just fine. |
