.

I want to make this topic an poll, but there is no such function on this forum.

both of them are popular along with nanohaSS in 2007 spring animes.
now their dvd will be released on america soon.

accroding to oricon, lucky star is clearly the winner of dvd sale on japan for 2007 spring animes.

this topic is for dvd sale on america.

although america doesn't have oricon, a report called videoscan provide similar service.

and it look like one of the mod. (tempest) here can access this report,
so we can still know the actual result on this site.

we will compare their vol.1 dvd sale on each own first three weeks.

for me, I predict that lucky star will still be the winner of dvd sale
compare with gurren lagann on america.

i'm confused, are you saying Lucky Star will outsale outsale Gurren Lagann in america? cause you might as well prepare disappointment right now. just look what happened to the Haruhi hype machine. Kyoani's work isn't exactly appealing to average joe, whereas ADV can simply sell Gurren Lagann as being an action show from the creator of FLCL.

and that's why I made this topic here :

to have an time mark for my prediction before the actual result is out.

are you the same Westlo from animenation?

if you are, then about the part we talked on the dvd sale gundam00 :

it's already one week after gundam00's dvd start sale on japan.

although I don't have the actul sale data now, I heard the rumor that
gundam00's vol. 1 dvd saled less then 20,000 on first week.

I'll let you know the actual result when I have it,
if it's true, then that means anime air earlier does not help on dvd sale,
which make you a reason why geass 2nd may lose compare with haruhi 2nd.

Yes I'm the same Westlo from AN and like I said at the time I had no idea how well Gundam 00 was going in Japan. I have no idea if any of its cast was a fan favorite like Lelouch or C.C etc, since I have no access to any newtype, animage polls etc.

I'll also like to see some proper confirmation on Gundam 00 DVD 1 sales but if it is at 20k...

animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=522715#522715

I guess this happens if you have 4 dull leads who combined can't even compare to Lelouch. I still insist that CG 1->2 will have a similar jump in sales such as GS->GSD. It's fan promo dvds are selling around 10k each with ease and it's a sequel to the 7th highest selling (by avg) title in Japan.

Lucky Star is pretty popular with some of the American core anime fanbase, but I don't think it will outsell TTGL. (Assuming TTGL's DVD release gets off the ground, of course...) "Slice-of-life" series just don't sell all that well in the US, except when they have something else going for them like Haruhi's sci-fi weirdness or Azumanga Daioh's off-the-wall humor. Lucky Star is quite funny in its own way, but a lot of its humor comes from references that only hardcore fans will get. It's not something that will appeal to the "casual" consumer who browses the shelves and occasionally buys some anime. However, TTGL benefits from its studio connections to popular series like Evangelion, FLCL, Abenobashi, and the fact that it's an "epic" action series with plenty of fights, explosions, and giant robots. (Or at least that's what it seems like -- I haven't seen it myself, to be honest.) Lucky Star has the Haruhi connection, and that will gain it some popularity and sales, but Bandai won't get as much mileage out of "From the studio that brought you The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Air, and Kanon" as ADV will be able to do with TTGL and other Gainax series. Heck, they might even be able to truthfully say "Gainax's best work since Evangelion" on the DVD boxes this time Wink I guess Bandai could say "From the studio that brought you Full Metal Panic Fumoffu and The Second Raid," but that would be disingenous and misleading to consumers who would expect LS to be similar.

These are just my predictions; I don't know anything more about sales data than the average anime viewer. But I believe the overall history of anime sales in America shows that action sells, and comedy will sell if it's accessible to American fans. Comedy can be made accessible through reference notes (which Bandai will do with LS) but it's like they say, a joke you have to explain isn't funny. Excel Saga caught on big, but it had plenty of wacky comedy in addition to the puns and references explained via the vid-notes. Lucky Star has sequences like the one in ep#8 at 17:55, which builds up to Konata's punchline, "Those two definitely triggered a flag." I found that scene funny, but most people aren't familiar with visual novel-type games, and thus won't get the joke.

"core"

this is the key point.

I have posted an example somewhere else before :
________________________________________

10,000 people watch naruto, 1000 people pay 10$ for dvd.

1,000 people watch haruhi, 900 people pay 20$ for dvd.

which side will be the core of us anime market?
________________________________________

I believe this example will come true on america eventually.

I believe this IS very true to most countries in the world (Japan included).

Except it looks more like:

200,000 watch Naruto, 20,000 pay ($10) for a DVD <----using your prices
15,000 watch Haruhi, 3000 pay ($20) for a DVD
____________________________________________
The only difference would be that both watch numbers would be greater, but I believe the proportions are still more realistic.

With the example as you wrote it, your basically saying that 90% of all people who saw Haruhi bought it.

and that's why I come to this site.

with someone has access to reliable resource such as videoscan,
we can know what the actual result is,
instead of having an example to guess it.

I just wish that videoscan can be as good as oricon on japan.

if u need some poll information from newtype about top 20 most popular anime in japan, top 10 male characters in japan, top 10 female characters in japan, top 10 dvd and manga sales in US monthly polls. I can provide you the information if requested from august issue 2007 through february 2008. Nielsen video scans usually have some pretty good and accurate statistics but its a pain in the ass to get the information from them.

personally I think TTGL will outsell Lucky Star because of the type of genre it is like Zalis116 said. It could be aimed at a wider audience and Lucky Star has alot of japanese references that only some hardcore anime fans will get. Japans top anime is not always the same as the top anime in US is what I'm implying

I had another topic on talkback, but no answer.

animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=48824

is it possible to know the sale number in that US monthly polls?

Unfortunately no, the poll doesn't go into detail. It just shows listings of rank and title
