Thanks for this review, Zac, I'd been wondering about this book, you make it sound like what is good we get from The rise of Skywalker.

I've been interested in the number of great young writers who've been producing Star Wars novels and anthologies, lately --- Nnedi Okrafor, Rebecca Roanhorse, Daniel Jose Older, and others, and have been planning to check out their works, too.

I have loved Luke for my entire life and I've grown up with a particular image of him that was so set in my mind that I found the sequel trilogy to be quite offensive in it's treatment of much of his storyline. I understand these are all legends, stories told about the character without saying they're true or not but I'm still on the fence about whether or not I would want to read them. Although the manga format alone is close to pushing me over the edge. But not quite.

The Akira Himekawa one was my favorite and felt the most like an adventure, but they're all good except the one about the magic space flea IMO. That one was just absurd, and makes Luke come off like some bumbling idiot who only survived the rancor fight through dumb luck and help from a Jiminy Cricket like character. The ones that don't try to meddle with stuff from the movie events were better.

Having him contemplate killing his nephew to avoid him turning into his grandfather and then becoming a hermit after said nephew killed most of his students wasn't really offensive.

I like that we're getting manga adaptations of books. It's interesting media for Star Wars to explore. I just hope it comes out in English too though.

Actually this book is already out in English. There’s copies of it in my nearby Barnes n Nobles so you can order it.

Man I would love to see something like a Vagabond-esque Star Wars manga and it fit too, since Jedi are based off samurai.

Let me introduce you to the concept of the unreliable narrator. That's the flea's telling of the events, and, well, it seems the flea is prone to exaggeration, and maybe a little self-agrandizement.

I think that one wound up being my favorite specifically because it humbled Luke - if you view a giant hero through the lens of a lowly parasite, and consider that no "great man" is totally great completely on his own without any assistance from anyone, the story works from both a "what if" perspective and an examination of what heroism is.

Frankly, all of the stories in this book are very good. I just liked that one the most because it complicated the "legend of Luke Skywalker" in new and interesting ways. Probably why I think The Last Jedi is the best Star Wars movie, too.
