I was re-watching Cromartie High School vol.1. And noticed that at least two parts didn't match.

Episode 6, "Sentimental Bus" (maybe). At the part right after "Aroha Hill Road" Takenuchi says something that wasn't English (Japanese) in fact it wasn't his voice, then after in "Taxi" at the very end when Kamiyama says "we've come back" again it's the Japanese version. Is this some overlooked screw up or is my copy just messed up?

Several months ago someone posted that "Cromartie" came from some drummer or musician, I think it's actually from a baseball player with that name.

Normally, the subtitles are an approximate translation of the Japanese dialogue. Dubs can sometimes differ if groups want to "re-culturize" the line since the joke might only make sense to Japanese people and that they want to make it entertaining for their own native audience (in English, for this particular case).

For more examples, try watching Ranma 1/2 in English with the subtitles. There were a few cases I remember where they made reference to Emeril and another spoof of the WWF (Degeneration X and The Rock, I think it was).

As for the name Cromartie, I believe the cultural notes in the extras explain something about how a lot of the names originate from baseball people and stadiums. What you saw months ago about the musician thing was probably referring to Freddie Mercury of Queen.

Though to be honest, I think Freddie (from Cromartie) looks more like actor Jean Reno.

I think I was deeply misunderstood. What I saw has nothing to do with subtitles being different, in fact there is no English dialog(in that frace) it's Japanese with the Original Japanese voice. In the English audio. I was asking if it was the dub or just my copy(that has this).
-This is all in the English audio-
(refrace) Kamiyama, Freddie and Takinuchi get off the taxi then Takinuchi says something(in English) Kamiyama interupts with "We've come back" in Japanese with the voice of the Japanese Voice actor.

It wasn't about Freddie at all. It was some guy from some famous band who's last name was Cromartie.

I have the Cromartie thin pack. I've watched it in dub numerous times, and I've never really noticed what your talking about. I actually watched both the bus and taxi scenes recently, and never noticed any Japanese being spoken. I'll probably go and watch it again tonight to see if I can hear what your talking about.

Oh, and the name Cromartie was taken from Warren Cromartie, who's an American baseball player that played baseball in Japan, which is the same case for all of Cromartie's rival schools as well. And apparently Warren Cromartie originally wasn't too happy about his name being used with a school full of deliquents.

I found what you're talking about on "Sentimental Bus". To me it sounds like his voice, but like what he's saying has been sped up. Definitely sounds like his voice though, just a bit faster and higher as a result of the speed. Maybe they put in something hidden, who knows. As for Kamiyama's foreign tongue later in the episode I'm not entirely sure. The audio doesn't skip and the sound is consistent so there's nothing to indicate there was a mess up anywhere. In fact, if you switch to the Japanese dialog the audio what he says is the same, but the pitch of the sound effects and his voice is somewhat different so it obviously didn't pull off the same track.

They both seem intentional, and honestly with this series that wouldn't surprise me in the least. They throw all kinds of weird things in there both in the audio and the video.

The first part sounds like it's English to me. But I have absolutely no idea what he's saying. With the Japanese track and subtitles, it seems to totally skip that phrase. It kinda sounds like he's saying "Dead bodies........................"

The second part is definately different between the English and Japanese sound tracks. My guess is that is a parody of something, but I have no idea what. This entire series has so many little jokes to it. All of them with a focus towards different cultures and lifestyles. I'm guessing someone out there probably gets it.

Heh, well we must be on the right track. I also got "dead" as the first word but it sounded like he opened with "dead puppies" to me in that line. I didn't think to check the Japanese track to see if it existed there but you're right, it's only on the English track. I've got a mic setup here on the comp, maybe I'll try recording it sometime and slowing it down to see if I can get something legible out of it.
